8-track tapes.

my main stereo is very old. some kid probably listened to Kiss Alive on it in the 70s. it has an 8-track deck. i bought some tapes (10 cents each), but found that my 8-track player doesn't work. i'd have to find another one if i want to get down to the serious business of listening to 8-tracks.

i've never even played an 8-track tape before. and i'm not sure how they work or how they sound. do they suck? do they rule? sound good? bad?

tell me what you think.

Reaons you shouldn't collect 8-tracks?

Deterioration over time
Poor tape handling
Poor Stereo seperation
Pain in the ass to repair
Not the same sequencing as record or any other format because of short program times

But there are some 8-tracks that are good. AMPEX made really well engineered 8-track tapes. Lear Jet was an O.K. cartridge. Capitol Records tapes SUCKED bad!!! A&M's were good, Columbia's were a little lesser quality.

The only real good thing about certain 8-tracks was that you got extra music to fill out the blank space on the tape. For instance, on the 8-track release of Lou Reed's 1973 album, "Berlin", between the title song and "Lady Day", is about a minute-long instrumental which can only be found on that format of the release.
On Pink Floyd's 1977 album, "Animals", is an extra guitar solo by touring Floyd/Roger Waters guitarist Snowy White, which can only be found on that format of the release.

Sometimes, different mixes will be presented on 8-track as opposed to other formats. Quadrophonic 8-tracks are quite rare, and if you have 8-tracks of early Beatles albums, you can hear what some of the songs sounded like in stereo.

So really, 8-tracks are only for music collectors, and mainly for nostalgia. And like I said, not all 8-tracks are bad (just most of 'em!). :) There's some 8-tracks I still listen to that sound great. Incidentally, I have a lot of classic rock 8-tracks and a few players (my father's) that I've been trying to get rid of. If anyone is interested, drop me a line at my e-mail (it's in my profile).

From what I remember of them, they suck.

Hey, that reminds me of a story:
When I was ten, my friends mom had one. We used to listen to the Bay City Rollers on it. My friend used to want to listen to the Village People always proclaiming how great they were. I didn't see it. They just confused me(Mainly because on the front cover, one of the guys had his balls hanging out of a hole in his jeans). After awhile I stopped hanging with that kid. Too many creepy sleep overs.
No goddamit!! I don't want to dance and sing along to the YMCA again!

Back to 8 tracks - Once the tapes get old you start to hear other tracks playing in the backgound at the same time.

Someday someone will ask you this same question, but it will concern cassettes. I'll give you the answer now, they sucked too.

If you want to collect them for the sake of collecting, sure. It's pure novelty. The only problem with collections is moving...if you own, you're in good shape.
