Posted - 05/04/2004 : 03:56:13 I hate this fucking show, and yet find myself watching it all the time. The british one is more interesting, in the sense that stuff tends to be older....but the american one, wow, it sucks. Very stupid. I watch it just to see the looks on people's faces when they find out it is not worth a shitload. if the piece really had sentimental value, you wouldnt be schlepping it into the car and bringing it to an antiques convention in the first place. and boy are these people greedy.... this whole obsession with antiques has contributed to ruining the community-gathering aspect of garage sales...where people would get rid of their stuff for 25 cents each no matter what it is. this served to reinforce neighbourhood bonds. now with people on the prowl spending saturdays going from sale to sale for a copy of the constitution or other pieces of 'americana', the atmosphere has gotten quite ridiculous, where you'll often see things with ridiculous prices (eg. a laptop for 1200$). instead of kids having a lemonade stand next to mom and pops' garage sale, they have gotten into the selling themselves. isn't it cute to see a ten year old getting a piece of navajo art appraised?....it warms my heart. what are you teaching your kids? GREED. needless to say this whole antiques craze has turned people crazy....for example, I helped my mom set up a garage sale a few months ago.....90% of people were 'on the prowl'. one guy even opened the door to the house and started bidding on my mom's china. Fucking antiques roadshow, thanks for contributing to obsessive consumerism.

Posted - 05/05/2004 : 11:56:44 I can't believe you get that show in other countries. It used to interest me in a 'I'll watch it 'cos my mum is watching it and I can't be bothered playing with my Star Wars toys anymore tonight' kind of way. Sundays really suck for T.V!!! Even more so than every other day.

Posted - 05/05/2004 : 08:19:46 I like both versions of the show and I'm not ashamed to admit it. There is another wannabe version of the show on Home & Garden TV that is not very good. |

Posted - 05/05/2004 : 01:02:44 didnt mean to sound bitter, i'll use smilies from hence forth. in this case though, it's not the collecting of antiques being the root problem. i feel it's a media induced frenzy. couple that with mankinds corrupt heart and the words "want" "me" and "mine" and you get a concoction that could corrupt the vatican. wait...thats been done too.
see what i mean? it's the story of human nature. without a soloution we are just consumers. and being consumers, there is no solution. and pointing at one show seemed a little naive to me. |

whoa....bitter....I am as materialist as the next guy....my point is that, antique collection has taken materialism to new heights. Go to a garage sale and hang out for awhile and you'll see what I mean. They come in droves. |

so often the americanised versions of great UK shows turn out crap.
