When it was actually an amusing novelty because it wasn't the ONLY thing on television? Granted, the concept has never been a favorite of mine. I much prefer a good story with characters. That's why I don't watch television at all really. If I got any channels where I currently live, I'd probably tune into reruns of the Simpsons and definitely watch Conan O'Brien, but other than that, I don't have much use for television nowadays. Maybe if I had cable I'd watch All In the Family. But I see that show is out on DVD now, so no need for that.
I can't believe this new show where women get plastic surgery done. That's just fucked up. I had never really seen any reality TV since it caught on. Never saw Survivor or anything that's followed since. But then recently I caught about 15 minutes of the bachelor at my cousin's house. Him and his friend were just sitting there, watching it while stoned. It felt uber-pathetic. And the content of the bachelor show didn't help. It was filmed just like a soap opera, and none of the women were all that attractive because they were so decked out and made up, and therefore boring looking. I could tell the damn thing was scripted, too. Ugh, shows like this really make me question if our level of technology and communications has begun to send us backwards, because with all the capabilites of sending and receiving great amounts of information about so many things, that people chose to use that technology for something like the bachelor or any of this reality TV shit, well... goddamn.

I got my degree in theatre, and although I prefer a thrust stage to a soundstage, I have many friends who would like to make it into TV with their acting degrees. Sorry guys. Looks like they don't need actors anymore.

Minimal stage/crew/staff costs

I suppose reality shows have writers of sorts, but they don't really have to do much actual writing.

part of the reason for the recent boom is/was the impending actors/writers strike about two years ago, if any of you remember that. a lot of the TV networks jumped on the idea of reality shows for the reasons obfuscate and king have mentioned: they're cheap to produce, there are no "actors" and no "writers".. no unions to deal with.
a friend of mine auditioned for some reality show once, but he said that once he read the fine print of the contract, said fuck it because (with this partiular show - and i think most of them work this way now) the company would have "owned" his image after the show. ie. he couldn't go on and do commercials or anything like that, using his image.
they completely control your existence after that. |

Regarding no writers, that may be the case with most of them, but the bachelor seemed incredibly scripted. Maybe the people on the show are just so standard that they seemed scripted and programmed.

Also, since the people aren't actors, they're disposable. There's always more people willing to make jackasses out of themselves to get on TV, and to them, whatever money they're offered is adequate, if not way beyond what they want, so that way the networks don't have actors demanding a million dollars an epsisode for 5 years, which can happen with shows like sit-coms and continuing dramas.

The reason behind the "reality" boom, is that they're so cheap to produce and everybody watches them.
They offer some schmuck a million dollars to make a fool of themselves.
The ratings are huge, so they get huge advertising revenues.
