There is this book, “The Silicon Valley of Dreams” that came out last year that is a pretty interesting indictment of Silicon Valley. Thus far, it has been the assumption that the valley consists of local, renegade, entrepreneurs, golf-shirt wearing, environmentally friendly, hip office environments, etc…. This book shows that the organizational structure and production organization there is ecologically disastrous and working conditions for women and minorities are horrible. It basically uncovers the image to be a lie, the idea that most of the companies consist of what were once garage-start-up businesses, and that the actual percentage of the t-shirt and jeans wearing hip working environments are extremely low. It kinda harkens back to the 1920’s where the prevailing notion was that all a man needed was an idea, and he’d make a million bucks. Has anyone read this book?
