Hypothetical question of the day:

If you were to move to another country, which would you choose and why?

I would probably choose either:

1. France - more benign climate, friendly people (although I would want to be fluent in French to be able to properly integrate), a traditional community spirit still alive in towns and villages, beautiful landscape, much lower house prices, great cuisine, great transport links

2. New Zealand - never been but I imagine the way of life is very pleasant. Maybe benji could comment. From what I have seen and read the climate is fine, the scenery stunning, crime rate is very low, a good standard of living, very cheap housing (relative to the UK), gentle pace of life

I have no intention of emigrating but lots of people do and I am always intrigued as to the reasons why. What do you think fb peeps?

Well I had one of my movie marathons. I got three films out from the video shop. Being a crappy little video shop, they don't have much to choose from. I saw Minority Report (not bad), Roadkill (OK I suppose) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. TCM is not as disturbing as the original (would be hard for it to be more disturbing though) but definitely more gory.

I wanted to watch Kill Bill, but they only had one copy and it was out.

Anyway, glad you had a good night.

i didn't say i hated it did i?
i just said i'd rather be at home if i had a choice of places to move too.
but i'm not going home yet cause there're many more things i want to do and see over here....and also, English winters are not fun, so maybe after summer, i'll have totally changed my opinion - i can do that....since it's all made up.

Hey Benji, I apologise if someone is holding you hostage in London but if you don't like it there what's to stop you from leaving?
benji Posted - 04/23/2004 : 04:54:30
yes, Galway was nice.
we never stayed in Galway, we camped in Spiddle instead, which was very beautiful.
i had scallops at the local seafood restaurant, and it was delicious...
ah, and the Bulmers Cider - who could forget the Bulmers.....

ah, wich i could remember more places....the only place we didn't like was Cork...it was yucky.

(and i congrat myself on my 1000th post - got here eventually.)

Galway is my favourite part of Ireland. The rest of us are surprised at how friendly it is in the West. I was stopping for petrol once and the attendant asked me how I was doing, and not in a rhetorical sense.

well i highly recommend anyone moving to New Zealand.
having lived in London for 8 months, the only place i really want to move too is back home.
i miss the weather and the scenery and the laid back lifestyle...but most importantly i miss the Greenness.

but apart from that, I'd LOVE to live in Ireland somewhere.
it's such a beautiful country and everyone is incredibly friendly.
i'd make it along the coast somewhere, but i wouldn't be too fussy apart from that.

Country-wise....dunno...maybe Alaska, but having never been there, i don't know - it just looks pretty....and for some yummy beer.

Berlin - I worked there a few years ago and loved every minute of it.
Tokyo - I´ve got some friends over there so I´ll probably be tempted at some stage when Spain loses its shine (or civil rights).

Yeah, i think any where is probably cheaper than the south of the UK right now.

By afford to live there I meant about the whole health thing, and I dont know, you guys seem to get charged for everything, and youre earning less.

I know it all balances out somewhere along the lines, but I much prefer our way of being ripped off by the governament than yours. lol.

I love you for what I am not,
I did not ask for what I have got.

You will get used to me.
Welcome to your new joy.

I think London is much more expensive than Boston - can't speak to New York though. It seems most cities cost a pretty penny (eh, I hate that expression) these days though.

Do you have to get citizenship to live there? Are you getting married? I am not trying to pry (i.e., feel free to ignore me) - I am just curious how the Visa stuff works if you move over there.

Any Americans that stay in the UK beyond their visa date get thrown into the Tower of London and flogged daily.

Sorry, Jim, but that's the rules.

"I've rejoined the Cult of Ming / Star of favourite childhood movie of 1980"

Aww, dont worry darling, ill buy you back!

actually, that might be a cheaper way to do it...rather than paying for all these different visa and stufff..

Not saying they would sell you cheap darling.....<runs away>

I dont know where I would live.
You know when youre younger, and you hate the country you live in and think that if you move away to another country, it will be great there?
Yeah, well I sorta woke up from that, and thought, fuck, i dont wanna have to pay to go and see my doctor, or get charged through the nose for a little op here and there. lol. I dont know. I like England, I love England. Yeah, its not perfect, but where is? No metter twhat we do a good job genereally, yeah theres things to complain about -= but not as much as some.

I was bought up in and on the outskirts of london.
I think theres a lot of beauty in london, but I do agree, that everyone is miserable there, because of the commuters and stuff. But its just more about where you go.
Ive never lived any where as good as Brighton. IT has the beauty (but better) and cosmopolitan and cultural stuiff here , but at the same time everyone here is so nice, the atmosphere is brilliant.

I dont know where else id live. I
I love the look of italy, it looks amazing, but i couldnt deal with the Heat.
Paris is incredible - and id like to explore france a little more.
Sweeden if a war breaks out.
New York / Boston If I was rich, and could afford it. heh.

But no, im not intending on moving anywhere. Not even to wales/scotland/N.Ire. I love my country!

Ramona, no, thats fine. I dont really get the whole visa situation, basically its very confusing.
I think its you can get a visa for 6 months, erm, but theres a bunch of other types of visa such as student etc.
Im not sure what our exact plans are yet, were trying to not think that far ahead, and concentrate on this summer, and see how things go...but its unlikely that that will be the end of it. Weve already decided im going there for christmas/jimsbday/new years...lol.

But yeah, its Jim that been looking at all that stuff, so I couldnt really tell you.
I thinkyou can get a spouse visa (if we were married) but Id have to prove I can support both of us, and that we would live together, and Jim wouldnt be able to work for 6 months, which sucks. so yeah.

No plans as such yet.
