Anyone else here like them? When I first heard them I put the CD in my player for weeks straight. Since then, I haven't listened much. But I think they're really talented and unique too.

They should never have split up.

Saw MV open for PIXIES in L.A. a couple years back. Wasn't impressed. Heartbreakingly a lot of people left after MV because that's what they came to see. Oh well. Whatever.

2 1/2 years later, and all my mars volta albums are on lala.com waiting to be traded.

I like this band, but they're not too original. Can, Led Zep, Rush, etc. I slightly prefer the second album.
starmekitten Posted - 08/31/2006 : 07:41:45
The first two tracks from the first album I love. The rest I never have been able to sit and listen to.

I had a friend tell me that they were very much akin to Janes Addiction with their live show so I went with him. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh but it was pretty much the biggest load of shit I ever heard. I saw JA in '90 before I ever heard a note of their music and that was pretty much a religious experience.

I don't know the first album at all. What does it sound like?

Amputechture is much much better than Frances The Mute - it's a move back to where they were with Deloused in my opinion

The new album is pretty good. Not amazing, but good - better than their last couple of offerings. 2nd half of it exceptionally prog heavy.

you can hear a song (Viscera Eyes) from their new album on their MySpace page:

I saw the chili peppers at the garden last year with mars volta and queens of the stone age opening, and people booed mars volta. And then the queens came out. And they sucked. I also haven't heard much sparta, but atdi and mars volta are bitchin'

Listened to Deloused. Hardly impressed.

Sparta is a more emo, less nuts version of ATDI. ATDI worked because you had a really great rhythm section, a decent songwriter and then two NUTS guys who also wrote songs. you mix the normalcy of the first half and the insanity of the second and you get a really interesting mix. seperate the two, one is bland and one is overblown prog rock

Oh yeah, I'm a big ATDI fan. Haven't heard Sparta yet. The Mars Volta are weird. I love every part of their music, but it is very strange. The lyrics make no sense whatsoever, and it's almost impossible to even read anything at all into them. The whole thing makes me feel like I'm 16 again and on acid. Bad and good.

At The Drive In were fantastic, and they had so much potential that was left unfullfilled IMO. The Mars Volta arse around too much. The first single was awesome though, the song of the album by far.

ATDI I never really got, but I had the same experience with MV as klikger - I really liked the album when I first got it, but I haven't listened to it for ages. It was pretty good. as I recall, but probably a bit overated. If you feel like listening to some music where you have to think about it, I'd recommend it.

I feel they are overrated as well. I was really into what they had done with At the Drive-In, but when I heard the Mars Volta and Sparta's first EP releases I wasn't too impressed. I actually enjoyed Sparta better. Then I caught a video/concert on Mtv2 one day and I was like, "Oh great, another noise rock retro style strokes-esque band." It was them (MV) and not that great. But that's my opinion.

Check out At the Drive-In first.

Deloused In The Comatorium is a silly album title for starters. There are a few good moments on the album but generally overrated. At The Drive In was good, One Armed Scissor I loved.

i never liked at the drive in... so my opinion of mars volta is the same. don't like anything they've done either. don't like that kind of thing really. the way they sing annoys me.
