It has been a long time since I've seen an American indie film which I realy admired. L.I.E. must be old news in the US by now but I'm curious if anyone on this board watched the film. Cuesta was brave to make this film and Brian Cox delivered a magnificent performance.
Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man is used to incredible effect in the film. I don't know much of Donovan's music but this is a great song. I've listened to it a bit now and the sound and tone of it reminds me of some stuff on Beck's Mellow Gold.(Pay No Mind, Nitemare Hippy Girl, Whiskeycyclone and Steal My Body Home)
Any Beck fans know if he ever mentioned Donovan?

Frank Black probably likes Donovan. If that means anything to you.
"Hurdy Gurdy Man" is heavier than Donovan's other stuff, but he's got a lot of cool songs. I don't know how easy or hard it is to get his old albums on CD (though I see the Greatest Hits around a lot). I got most of 'em on vinyl. The first album, Sunshine Superman and the double album, A Gift From a Flower to a Garden are my favorites. They're psychedelic pretty folky poppy albums.
L.I.E is a fine movie. Brian Cox is an acting god. It makes the best use of a Donovan song in a movie (that I know of).
The second best use of a Donovan song in a movie is in Goodfellas. "Atlantis" plays while Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci beat the heck outta some guy. |

Yes, the film plays out in a subburb close to the expressway which features prominently in the film. I don't know if the script was influenced by a book, what was the book about? Cuesta, the director, is credited as one of the writers.

Is this movie title making a pun of the long island expressway? Is it at all related to the book L.I.E., which has making a pun, released a few years ago? Cause that book was trash

L.I.E. was disturbing to watch but it does an excellent job of showing the conflicts in Big John. The scene where he shaves Howie's cheek was gut wrenching. I could realy sense the evil in this man but also his ability to be tender and caring.
I've always though Donovan was some lame folk singer, never made any effort to listen to his songs. I'm definitely going to look for some more of his music.

L.I.E. is a disturbingly great movie. You almost feel uncomfortable saying that you enjoy the movie...it's really well done. I totally agree with your Hurdy Gurdy Man sentiment; it was definitely placed well in the film and provided a great, moody effect. You should really check out more of Donovan's music. Pick up his Greatest Hits.
