Posted - 04/15/2004 : 14:31:21 How many bands/records can you name from the last ten years that will genuinely stand the test of time and be respected in 20 or 30 years time. Clearly this is a slightly pointless topic, but there you go, I'm a slightly pointless person.
For the sake of objectivity, lets exclude all Pixies related bands.
I think Jeff Buckley just scrapes into the time frame, and I think OK Computer and The Bends will be there.
As for the White Stripes, the Strokes all the other 'The' bands that are trendy at the moment... they will all be consumed in the dustbin of eternal oblivion.

I still listen to it.
This may sound like cheesey bands but.... I still love marcy playground's first album...sooooo good. And soup by blind melon. I don't think I'd ever stop listening to those 2.

Posted - 05/19/2005 : 01:30:50 It's damn near impossible to predict, but I could name a few which I think should still be appreciated in the future. That would include
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues & The Lyre of Orpheus (2004) Kristin Hersh's The Grotto (2003), which sounds certainly more timeless than 2001's Sunny Border Blue The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (2000) just about anything by Pinback, let's say the self-titled first album (1999) Robert Wyatt - Shleep (1997) The 3 albums by the late great Joe Strummer & his Mescaleros, particularly the posthumous Streetcore (2002) for me. In The Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998) by Neutral Milk Hotel
I would love for some Vic Chesnutt to be in there but I think all his "monuments" are pre-'95. I hope I'm wrong.

Posted - 04/17/2004 : 18:35:39 I think so. Im not a huge fan but they sort of took metal away from the metallica type stuff and made it popular without being nu-metal, I know its difficult to brand bands and some may consider them nu-metal I dunno, whatever. It seems to be a very important album to many and I suspect shall continue to be. Im not a fan of that music usually but I really like both the system of a down albums all though I have trouble listening to them now as they feel some miserable and dark, it brings me down.

Aside from P4P (which I haven't heard) I can't agree with any of these, sorry.
New Adventures In HiFi maybe...
Although, I wasn't setting out to make a point, I do realise that there has been a dearth of high class bands since 94. I guess there'll be a few more underground records that will be recognised as classics later on. 'I See A Darkness' by Bonnie Prince Billy maybe?
I just though of Johnny Cash's American Recordings albums, I reckon they'll stick around.
"Join The Cult Of Wormy Cheese Man/In Ten Words Or Less"
I See A Darkness is one of the best albums ever. I'm glad you've mentioned it. Smog's Knock, Knock, Knock is another classic rarely mentioned.
Travis, David Gray, Franz Ferdinand etc. all made good albums but surely not classics?
Simon, I'm surprised to see you're still posting. I thought you were soaking up some sun in Durban. I've just returned from Cape Town, great weather.

Posted - 04/17/2004 : 04:14:21 An interesting question, S. 'IceCream' Egan. I dunno, a combination. Think about albums from twenty years ago, what is 'respected' now? Violent Femmes s/t? The Clash's Combat Rock? hmm. Maybe the early 80's were a cultural wasteland as well. Make up your own rules. Think what makes an album respected, or appreciated after its own era.
Stop asking me these difficult questions.

Posted - 04/17/2004 : 00:25:10 The Flaming Lips' Zaireeka and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots SHOULD, imo, stand the test of time - and probably will, but only among certain people.
What do you mean, The Simon "Cheeseman1000" Briercliffe, when you say 'respected' in 20 years? What constitutes respect? Is it respect in terms of being played on the radio and showing up in the top ### lists of popular journals and magazines? Or is it respect in terms of an IceCream 20 years from now discovering a scratchy OK Computer LP in a used $1 bin at a flea market and thinking, "oh yeah, 'Electioneering' was quite a catchy tune"?
