Why do they even sell full screen versions of movies on DVD anymore? I know some people still buy them (maybe their TVs are 13") but they are so lame. I hate when I accidentally rent a movie that's in full screen! It happened with the movie "The Ring" (good flick) and I was pissed off when I saw it was in full screen.

It's alright when a movie has both full screen and widescreen versions on the same disc, but movie companies shouldn't sell JUST full screen versions.

Well, last time I checked, widescreen TV's were a lot of $$. So, that just may be more of a factor than hickability. A person can be intelligent enough to know they want a widescreen, but don't have the cash.

Here's the thing. Most of us on this MB prefer widescreen because we're cultured, intelligent people. But Ma & Pa Kettle out there who just bought their first DVD player and are hooking it up to their 30 year-old television hate widescreen. Ma & Pa Kettle outnumber us by a significant margin.

But thankfully, many network TV shows like ER are broadcasting in widescreen. So given enough time, we'll have our widescreen day.

By the way, Good Burger ROCKS in widescreen!!

A friend of mine has this(region 2) and I'm sure it's widescreen.

I can tolerate fullscreen on a movie I don't own or care about, but I'll never buy/rent/pay money for a fullscreen movie. I got the Back to the Future trilogy in fullscreen and though there was no receipt or anything, I went to several places trying to exchange it. Now I'm waiting for my widescreen copy to get ordered in.

I always choose Widescreen over Fullscreen when given a choice.

Example of Widescreen's superiority:

Ghostbusters

-

In elevator scene you can actually see Harold Ramis!

When I have no choice but to watch a full screen movie, I simply apply several strips of black electrical tape to cover 2 inches at the top and bottom of the screen and, hey presto!, I am fully enjoying the film as the director intended.
realmeanmotorscutor Posted - 04/18/2004 : 15:59:47
I never knew so many people prederred widescreen. I'm always torn; I like to see the whole picture as it was meant to be seen but if I'm using a small TV is does seem shitty. I don't think people are hicks for wanting Full Screen, they're just used to it. I've tried to convert to Widescreen but when you have an entire family against it it becomes pretty difficult to sway them.

Widesreen is good for the "nostalgia" aspect (especially in older, "classic" films, or films with a lot of action or landscape scenes). Full screen is good for pretty much anything, but I like it for concert videos. All in all I prefer full screen. It doesn't really matter, anyway. Most DVD players (and TV's) nowadays have a button/function that converts the widesreen to full screen (although it stretches the picture out).

I've bought quite a few "bargains" at sales which turned out to be in the crappy letterbox format. In many countries outside of North America and Europe widescreen TV's are hard to find and expensive which probably explains why the DVDs are mostly letterboxed. It is a shame because I don't think directors like bits of their pictures to be chopped off.

Is porn widescreen or fullscreen?

Carl Posted - 04/16/2004 : 10:47:36
Some movies are filmed in the fullscreen format(1:33:1). Obviously, most TV series are released like this, because that's how they we're filmed! A lot of real old B/W movies are filmed in a full screen format, although some are 1:37:1. Actually, some of Stanley Kubrick's movies are filmed in the 1:33:1 ratio(i.e The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut). Anamorphic widescreen is the best-films processed to fit widescreen TVs. I have 'Casino' in non-anamorphic widescreen, so if you set the screen mode to auto, it's in 4:3! The picture quality is better and more natural with anamorphic stuff in the case of widescreen TVs.
floop Posted - 04/16/2004 : 10:33:53
that's cuz different films are shot in different aspect ratios. the most common being 1.85 ("academy") and 2.35 ("anamorphic" or "cinescope")..

most films are shot in 1.85, which means the image is 1.85 times wider than it is tall. Cinescope (2.35) is 2.35 times wider than it is tall. so, the bars will be even bigger at the top and bottom

more lovely internet explaination.

Some DVDs, when you push PLAY, do this...

Chose the version you'd like to see:

Widescreen OR Full screen.

They even show a still shot from the film in each one to show you the difference. If anyone would be lame enough to chose the version that cuts off the sides... then that boggles my mind. Full screen sucks. That's the bottom line.

Also, maybe floop or some movie buff could answer this.. I've noticed that the ratios can vary from film to film. Sometimes the "black bars" are alot thicker, say about 4 inches on my TV screen, and other times they are only about 2 or 3 inches. What's the explanation for this?

Widescreen is the superior of the two. That is what the movie is shot in so why would you want to watch Fullscreen and fuck up the proportions?

My sister will on;ly watch Fullscreen movies. I tell her she's a moron, buecause she's missing out on the full art of the film.

I didn't know they were selling full screen DVDs. That's insane. I saw The Fog yesterday (great flick, BTW) and it was full screen, and half the people talking in the movie weren't on screen.

I haven't used a pen in 3 years, pencil only cause yes the inksmudge is a pain in the ass. Odd that if the percentage of left/righthanders I keep hearing is correct, 10/90, in countries where they write right to left 90 percent of the population could find using pens inconvenient.

I bought a widescreen version of doc stangelove once. I struggled to even see the black bars. Which pissed me off, cause the the letterbox version cost me more.

It all depends on the specific film. For some, full screen is an abomination. Others, not missing much

i guess with some movies it doesn't matter. and if you personally don't care, then it doesn't matter. but when you watch a film in full screen you're losing almost 40% of the image. so, you're not seeing the film the way it was meant to be seen.

that's like a photographer having their work displayed in a gallery, but the gallery owner decides to crop all of the images to his or her liking. or listening to a piece of music and having the ending cut off early.

i guess if you're renting GOOD BURGER it's not much of an issue, but if you watch THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY in full screen you shouldn't be allowed to watch movies.

here's a decent explaination of how lame full screen is

It must suck for left handed people because they have to make sure they don't smear the ink as they write. I had a theory that more people in "right to left side reading countries" write left handed because of that reason. Though I could be wrong. Probably am.

For some reason my mom (not a hick) usually likes full screen (though I think she has converted somewhat) and one time she was jokingly complaining about the black bars and my dad says "Full screem cuts off some of the picture and you don't see what's on the sides." Then my mom jokingly says "But with widescreen you can't see what is on the top and bottom because the black bars cover it up." I thought it was funny. Guess you had to be there.

My wife looks at widescreen as simply having "black bars" at the top and bottom of the screen, like they're obscuring something. (She's definitely not a hick, tho..) I never thought of it that way. I always saw it as essentially what you see in a movie theatre, only smaller. It's wierd to me that some people's minds interpret them as "black bars." But, then again, it's wierd to me also that some people write with their left hand and that some nations read right to left.

Take me, break me, tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry

some widescreen things are stupid though, and you get black lines on the top and bottom. why the fuck do I need that, when I've got a widescreen TV? and sometimes i swear you don't even see more - they jsut put the black lines to made it seem wide.

if i'm gonna get a DVD, it has to be PROPER widescreen.

Yeah, some movies it's not crucial to be widescreen.

At Best Buy one time, this lady was buying Seabiscuit, and she wanted to make sure she was getting the FULL SCREEN version of it. Even though the movie is just mediocre, I imagine some of the shots in that movie would look wimpy in full screen mode. I wanted to say "Lady, you are making a big mistake."

I just bought a used copy of intolerable cruelity, not noticing that's it was full screen. That sort of thing used to bother me a lot, but now, not so much, as long as there arent horrible digital pans, like in The Fan. I bet that the fact that the DVD was full screen was why the person sold it in the first place. People can be such snobs. Or maybe he just didn't like the flick. Most movies, though, it not an issue, really. I can deal with missing a portion of the background detail in Dickie Roberts.
