Posted - 04/08/2004 : 16:14:09 A weird thing happened to me this evening. I was partially drunk, walking on the street of quite a peaceful district of the city (17e) with a couple of friends, when a police car passed by.
As they passed in front of me, I found it kind of funny to applaud them (I was thinking of Starsky&Hutch and stuff like that).
They didn't find it funny at all. The car stopped, and one of them got outside, stopped me and told me - What do you think you're doing? - Nevermind, it was a stupid joke, I said.
The cop obviously didn't believe me. He told me this was an outrage to the police (is this correct in English?), and that I would spend the night at the station, attached to the radiator, only in my underwear (en calbut, in French). He also told me "You can fuck with the city cops but not with us" (he was a part of the special police forces called CRS).
Of course, I kept my fucking mouth shut during this "conversation". At the end, he left, not without saying a couple of very intelligent sentences like "beware!" etc. I think that if my friends weren't there, he would probably have become violent.
I mean, why don't cops simply fight the crime. I wasn't doing anything dangerous. But if you go to some scary places of the city, then the cops aren't there to protect you.
We have a serious problem with this in France. The cops are really out of control. The new fashion for them is to rape the prostitutes and then blackmail them so that they don't reveal anything. I find this really disgusting.
I know some of the members of the forum are cops. I have nothing against them, and I'm very glad they're around. But some of their colleagues are really sick.

Posted - 04/13/2004 : 03:46:00 my mum had some problems a while back and the police were trying to help her, but it was really hard to get them to do anything. she had to keep on calling them, and the guy dealing with the case wouldn't be available or it wasn't his shift until later, and no one else could deal with my mum's enquiries... took her ages to get anything sorted and they just seemed to mess her about. i'm not saying it was their fault, they seem to be bogged down with paper work and stuff... yeah there's lots of disrespect for the police over here but i've never encountered a dodgy police officier or had any reason not to respect them. a tough job they do and i take my hat off to them. just a shame we can't have more police officiers!
(although it's good to see so many on the streets in manchester, kind of re-assuring i think!)

Posted - 04/13/2004 : 01:20:52 Homer's Monkey, if we hadn't carried guns Quebec would have been in California. A cop would have to be out of his mind to wear a badge and not cary a gun anywhere around here. Our imigration policies are rapidly turning this state into a third world country. The Rodney King riots were nothing compared to what will happen when the last job goes overseas and people get hungry. I don't think the police in Cali shoot nearly enough people and wish they were allowed to do summary street excutions. (All gang members first)

Posted - 04/12/2004 : 04:55:10 I just don't think the police should carry guns. Ours don't and our gun crime is still very low. Of course it's probably too late for the US to change now, but I don't think they should have started.
Which came first the chicken or the egg? I dunno.

As an experiment try dressing up like a foriegn soldier and doing the same thing. I bet you can run the whole police force out of town!
There are no foreign soldiers in France.

Posted - 04/11/2004 : 07:07:22 I think homer made a really good point, you cant judge all by some. Yeah, there are assholes, and it is probably different in various other countries , buit over here, its just a job, people go in to it for diffeent reasons, and i find, by the nature iof the work they do usually lose the morals they went in to the job with. |But again, im generalising!
When i was in new york, i was walking up broadway at 2 am, and these cops were dragging this guy out of central park, hitting him with those baton things, and they had huge guns, pretty scary stuff. Does have a very poweerful effect though - the us cops.

Posted - 04/10/2004 : 04:13:19 I guess that, one way or another, they have to use violence, that's the definition of the state (and now I'm acting like a smart ass, quoting Weber). But the people who join the cops are individuals, sometimes not very brilliant (again, I'm sure there are very nice and smart cops everywhere) and trying to liberate their inner frustration (wow) through their job. Sometimes, they act like a gang.
Oh as for the prostitutes, what happens is that the cops rape them (which is quite diferent from having sex with them, they really humiliate these girls, using objects etc.) then tell them that if they complain, they will send them back god knows where (these girls often come from eastern europe).

Posted - 04/09/2004 : 23:37:57 But you said so yourself, most cops aren't power-abusing assholes. Guns plays a huge role in the psychological empowerment over criminals. While it's true that the corrupt police use guns for bad purposes...the good (normal) officers who use guns to protect people are saving lives. Yes, sometimes they take lives in order to protect others, but they aren't supposed to shoot unless it's self defense. Accidents do happen, and it's more than understandable why. I'd hate to be in that life-or-death situation...you have just a split second to decide whether he's grabbing for a cell-phone or for a gun. I don't have any sympathy for the murderers of our world. People who have to kill in self-defense? That's understandable..and I'm able to empathize for them! I mean...I bet they don't feel too great after killing (or even hurting) someone in self-defense.
Please don't get pissed at me for having a different opinion...oh please oh please oh please...haha... |

I meant what I said, how people want to take it is a different matter. The whole idea of the police raping the prostitutes then paying them to keep quiet (rather than blackmailing them) is stupid, you know why? Because prostitutes are paid for sex. Why not pay them then have sex with them. Its just plain backwards, it would be great because its plain stupid.

Police Officers are a crucial part of our society and they deserve to be respected and that's what angers me so much about power hungry shmucks; they spit in the face of respectability.

I can only guess that the problem with police in the US is that they carry firearms. This no doubt gives some of them an even greater feeling of power. All countries have good cops/bad cops, just like all countries have good shopkeepers/bad shopkeepers. Evil doesn't limit itself to one particular profession.
The police seem to get a really hard time of it in this country (I don't really want to comment on other countries), people say things like "I f****** hate the police. F****** pigs!!!". But like I always say to them, "Who would you call if your house got robbed or your sister was raped?"
At the end of the day we need the police and hearing the odd story about a dodgy few and then assuming that all or most police are like that is just wrong (I know you haven't done this realmeanmotorscooter, I was just quoting you 'cos I wanted to make the early point about your police carrying firearms) . In the current climate or terror, we need the police more than ever.
To be honest with you, it the justice system that makes me more angry.

Posted - 04/09/2004 : 03:54:37 I didn't really feel like becoming a hero.
I forgot to say that at one point, the guy smelled my breath and asked me what I have been drinking. Whiskey-Coke, I answered. Then I really felt like saying "Is it a crime?" A little voice (like this little angel in American cartoons) told me "shut the fuck up!" so my sentence stayed somewhere between my tongue and my lips.
Luckily I am white. I can't imagine what would have happened were I black, or an Arab...
Sarkozy is really a jerk. I have quite right-wing political opinions, but if he's the presidential candidate, I will vote for the left. I met him once at my school, and he is really an ambitious asshole.
The way people perceive crime in France may have changed, but I still don't feel safe when I walk around Porte de la Chapelle at 2am.

Posted - 04/09/2004 : 01:37:49 This is what happens when people vote for the right.
The thing with the prostitutes - what happens is, there's a fairly new law that punishes, believe it or not, "passive hustling" ("racolage passif" in French). So now, basically, cops can bust any girl they want for just walking around in a miniskirt.
Of course it gives them tremendous power on the prostitutes - they don't even need a real reason to put them off the streets. And power, well... sometimes you want to use it. Especially if it can help you get a free lay and some cash on top. They have simple tastes, these guys.
All cops are not like that, of course. But the thing is, the ones who are are encouraged by the system. Courts tend to be lenient with cops and when it's word against word, guess who they'll believe...
I'm glad you kept your mouth shut Adnan. You don't want to end up being the "hero" of an indignant article in the "Société" section of Libération...
Let that be a warning to us all: if we feel like fooling around with the police, let's make sure first that we wear clean underwear!
