It was 10 years ago today that he took his own life (or perhaps, had his life taken). He had a brief three years in the spotlight, but in those three years, Nirvana gave rock music a kick that it hadn't seen in a long time, or since. Love them or hate them, you can't deny their impact on rock music as a whole. Today, remember the power of their music; listen to your favorite Nirvana album on 10, strum along if you wish...remember the way you felt when you heard Nirvana for the first time. Thank you, Kurt.

I'm sort of glad he's not around to hear what's become of his musical legacy. Have you HEARD the new Vines record? Terrible. Unoriginal, uninspired. I watched Nirvana Unplugged on MTV2 and man is that good. I swear Kurt was the Howlin Wolf of our generation.
I also think the guitar solo on "Teen Spirit" is the most important solo ever played. Before then, most rock solos were technically unplayable to all but the most studious guitar players. After Kurt's Dada guitar solo every teenage guitarist realized they don't need to run scales for eight hours a day to be a good lead guitarist. I also think his guitar tone was important. His clean tone is so mournful sounding and instantly recognizible.
I was watching VH1 Classic yesterday and they did a double shot of Warrant. It reminded me of just how bad the mainstream rock scene was before Nirvana broke. As much as I think bands like The Vines and Limp Bizkit suck, they're brilliant in comparison to that shit.

I definitely think Cobain opened up an avenue for people to be more expressive in their guitar playing, which is a brilliant thing. I hold with the general consensus (I think) that Nevermind was a great album, and I listened to it a whole load a few years ago, but looking back I think the production let it down. I vastly prefer In Utero now, that record is stunning. I'd love to hear Albini's original mix.

Yeah, its about using the guitar as more than just an instrument. Its about expressing yourself via the instrument...and using it as an extention of yourself...

I'm sticking to my guns, the dude could solo like no other. I know most of his chord progrssions and riffs were relatively simple, but the solos were the shit. And Tartar, did your guitar teacher ever hear him live? I doubt it. I'm telling you, the dude could have given the Gunn a run for his money when he shredded the guitar on his solos. Kurt was very creative and strangely melodic in his solos but most of all there is so much feeling behind them, I guess you had to be there. Even as loud as his loudest screams, I think there is more feeling on his best guitar solo. Just my humble opinion, but I am right. |

Well he had a much bigger impact than a lot of the other deceased musicians. I just wish there wasn't such a fuss over ANY of them.

Aye, Kurt/Curt (always seems to change!) had a profound influence on me as well.

WOW!!! I was actually going to recommend you listen to 'Unplugged'. Doesn't music throw up varied opinions.

I never got Nirvana either, and now somehow I wish I'd known Kurt, behind all the hype and the media crap. I was 15 when Nevermind got released, didn't really like the singles, and decided I would hate the band, because you would see them everywhere and hear their damn songs all the freaking time on the radio. Now everyone says Kurt didn't really want the media coverage and the commercial success, and he looks like a cool guy. I don't know what to think actually. I reckon technical is not that important... look at Steve Vai, he is supposed to be a superb guitarist, but his music is shocking. It's what they create that's most important, not how good they are at playing.

Aww. I cant believe it was ten years. weird, huh.
I listened to Nirvana solidly for about 3 years. I was kurt obsessed (and later on, also Courtney). I in love with that man! He was like...I dont know, something so much more than I could ever explain, and...well, yeah.
About him being a good guitar player - well no, technically he wasnt astounding, but technical ability is niot something im particularly drawn to. His style was amazing, and thats would people loved.
NO one will ever work Kurt - or Nirvana. That is the whole idea. A forever lasting mystery, that no-one can penetrate. Thats why Nirvana are almost as popular today as they were 12 years ago. And propbably always will be.
Anyway, I hope you got what you wanted Kurt.

Anyway, I am no bif Nirvana fan, however they did produce some cracking songs (aneurysm, territorial pissings, serve the servants, rape me etc etc), and it was trully tragic when news got out that Kurt had killed himself.
I always find it strange to listen to music of people who have killed themselves, like Elliot Smith, Joy Division and Nirvana, I feel a sense of hollowness when you hear desperate lyrics and it kicks in that this person is no longer with us because they could no longer handle living anymore. Much as I love listening to Joy Division, or Elliot Smith it is something I do not do often as it freaks me out to some degree.
10 years ago, time has flown by. I remember it being a Saturday morning and I was working as a sales assistant in a shoe shop at the tender age of 17 when my bro legged it in and told me that Kurt had killed himself. Man, it doesn't seem that long ago.

even though, to some extent, it is true, i don't like how people who say that the likes of kurt cobain are not good guitarists, as if every song they write has to demonstrate their best skills etc. the fact is, he played what was damn good to listen to, whether it was simple or very complex.

Nirvana was the band that I was listening to heavily when I started playing guitar, and I thought Kurt Cobain was the master of the instrument, until my guitar teacher said, "You'll find as you play more that he wasn't a very good guitarist." I remember being devastated at this information. I thought Kurt WAS guitar, and so much more, too. Man, I was obsessed with Nirvana. Nevermind was the album I listened to the most then. None of the albums as a whole ever struck me the way Nevermind did, though nowadays I'd consider In Utero a more compelling listen, though none of their music seems as powerful to me nowadays as it did when I was 15.
As far as Nirvana songs that I would put in the great category nowadays, a few that come to mind are Breed, Serve the Servants, Scentless Apprentice, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, About a Girl. There's plenty, but those are some that still get me excited, especially Breed. Just rocks so hyperactively at a million miles per hour, and still manages to have solid footing. It's incredible.
I think Kurt knew he was overhyped. Then again, it was often hard to figure out what Kurt thought.

I saw Hole play at Raji's in Hollywood around 1990 or so. I could tell then that Courtney was a crazy stank ho. I wasn't surprised at all when I heard she was a dancer at Jumbo's Clown Room, probably THE sleaziest strip joint in Hollywood at the time. You gotta hand it to her though-- she's an opportunist (brilliant or lucky?) who parlayed her music into financial success and genuine celebrity status. What a world. |
