Posted - 04/01/2004 : 19:13:44 R.I.P., shot and killed by his own father 20 years ago today. Another horrible example of the mind-warping effects of religion. I highly suggest everyone listen to "What's Going On," which is no doubt one of the greatest albums of all time.

-- "You one of those right-wing nut outfits?" inquired the diplomatic Metzger. Fallopian twinkled. "They accuse us of being paranoids." "They?" inquired Metzger, twinkling also. "Us?" asked Oedipa.

Posted - 04/04/2004 : 06:20:06 Marvin Gaye was a great singer, and it's a real shame what happened. I'm another one who started listening to him after "True Colors".
I like both his and Cyndi's versions, though I think Cyndi wins, if only because her's doesn't have a bunch of people saying, "right on, right on, right on".
By the way, for the people who like Cyndi, if you haven't seen it, check out the 45 sleeve for "What's Going On"- it has a beautiful color photo of her that is a tribute to the Man Ray photo that's called something like "Glass Globes". There are scans of it on some of the bigger Cyndi sites.

Posted - 04/04/2004 : 01:13:36 Was Marvin Gaye famous at the time of his death, Top Ten hits and sell out shows, or did he only become famous after his death?

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 23:07:56 I wonder if plenty of people thought Marvin Gaye's death was an April Fool's joke at first.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 12:50:20 Such a shame that the anniversaries of two of music's greats are within a week of each other.
What a bad month for music.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 09:43:14 I've been itching to play Marvin Gaye all day as I read this thread just before leaving for work. Just wanted to say that Mercy Me is another monster of a classic song on that album.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 08:46:45 His songs might be smooth, but they aren't as smooth as the songs of Wire.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 08:37:40 Marvin Gaye...listening pleasure. So smooth, every song.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 06:17:56 But the superior version of What's Goin' On is the all-star MTV line up of music celebrities that was out a few years ago. Completely trashed the original Marvin Gaye version.

Posted - 04/01/2004 : 21:31:17 Oh, Ialmost forgot about Cyndi Lauper's cover, which was great for a whole new generation to get into a classic song...And I love El Barto's reference that its an R&B "Pet Sounds"...I never thought of it that way.....So tonight I shall start up the turn-table as I am lucky enough to have Marvin Gaye's album, Cyndi Lauper's True Colors and the FABULOUS Beach Boys....What a great alternative to the mind-sucking apparatus so commonly referred to as the "T.V"...
Organized religion, indeed, seems to result in disaster...although I do tend to toil around Buddhism - which seemed to me more of a way of living than a religion......Besides, save for the Chinese, who doesn't like the Dalai Lama....
With that, hail to Marvin, kudos to El Barto for remembering, and, oh yeah, Free Tibet...

If you guys hate religion, you should start a religion that preaches against religion.

Posted - 04/01/2004 : 20:25:14 Oh yes, Marvin Gaye sings like an angel. What's Going On is one mean mother of an album. I'd first gotten into the title song because of Cindy Lauper's cover it. Oh boy Marvin Gaye does it a billion times better.

Posted - 04/01/2004 : 19:35:30 I haven't heard much of his stuff and don't own any albums but what I've heard I like. Maybe when I have a little extra money sometime I'll check out What's Going On. Is that the best album to start off with? Like I said, I don't know much about him.
Religion is such a horrible thing is it not? I don't understand why anyone desires to be a part of any religion. The only affect (or is it *E*ffect?) I can see that religion has had on the world is more violence (and the news in Iraq is a prime example of that).
