Posted - 03/30/2004 : 11:48:36 I am talking, REALLY funny films. Films that have you in tears, not the ones that make you smirk occasionally 'cos you think they are clever in the way an Oscar Wilde play might. I vote for:
Dumb And Dumber (I quote it a lot) Caddyshack Airplane Airplane II Big Bus Three Amigos National Lampoon's Vacation National Lampoon's European Vacation
I probably missed some. Thinking about it though, I haven't seen a great comedy in years. And they say that the horror genre is dying.

I got Dumb And Dumber on DVD today. I got it as part of Virgin's 5 for 30 quid deal. I also got Holy Grail, Apocalpyse now (Redux), The Thing and Crouching Tiger...(haven't even seen it but it's supposed to be good). As well as that I also got ALL the Family Guy episodes from ALL three series. All for 36 quid. Bloomin' bargain!!! Cheap as chips!!!
Oh and in case you are interested, I also got a t-shirt, a new mouse, new PC speakers, 6 pairs of undies and Uncut Classics about Kurt Cobain. Add that to the Donnie Darko DVD I bought yesterday along with Grace by Jeff Buckley AND the 20 quid I put on Arsenal to win the FA Cup and you have the princely sum of 140 English pounds!!!
And I'm going out tomorrow night.
There's a hole in my pocket........

If you ever see Storytelling by Todd Solondz, Mike from American Movie is in that as the camera man for the documentary filmmaker. You gotta love that scream Mike bellows out in American Movie.

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 08:16:13 I gotta plug this film once again. One of the best unintentional comedies is Nail Gun Massacre. I recommend it to everyone. But be warned, it drags in a lot of spots, but the killings are absolutely hysterically bad.

Posted - 04/01/2004 : 08:14:29 The Ladykillers(the original, not the Coen Brothers remake, which is'nt out yet)is another classic, although it's more intriguingly amusing, clever and classy than totally sidesplitting. But that sounds like I don't think it's funny, which I do. Overall, it's a classic movie.

Posted - 03/31/2004 : 18:27:23 this is an easy one...
All Monty Python films, All Christopher Guest films, Early Woody Allen films (Anny Hall, Bananas, Sleeper, etc.), All Kevin Smith films (yes I found Jersey Girl funny, so what ), Snatch, Beatlejuice, Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, Tommy Boy & Black Sheep (they were a bit cheesy, but Chris Farley and David Spade worked great together.) Half Baked, Cheech and Chong Up In Smoke, Beavis & Butt-head Do America, Private Parts, Airplane!! (Surely you must be joking. I'm not joking and don't call me Sherly), Blues Brothers (We're on a mission from God), Wayne's World, Michael Moore films, All Child's Play movies (I don't think they're suppose to be funny but they are)...
That's all I can think of at the moment.

I was quoting Dumb And Dumber again. Well sort of. I adapted it to fit the situation.
It's when he gets back from dropping Mary Swanson off at the airport at the start, and he tells Harry all about it. You know, "Sparks flew, emotions ran high"???
And besides, you'll be sorry if there IS no tomorrow. You'll be sorry you didn't watch Dumb And Dumber one more time.

I think this is untrue. It's called Man Bites Dog in the USA, and I wouldn't call it funniest film ever. Actually I couldn't watch it entirely. We already discussed this movie on the forum.
Now if we're talking about French-speaking funniest films ever, I have to say I'm a big fan of Pierre Richard, esp. La Chêvre and Les Malheurs d'Alfred.

Posted - 03/30/2004 : 22:48:32 I'm not the biggest fan of comedies. I prefer humor to be as natural as any other element of a film, I don't like it to be set up and seem contrived, which happens a lot when the sole purpose of the film is to make people laugh.
I like some of the Pink Panther films, but mainly for the scenes where he fights that karate/ninja assistant of his.
When I was younger, I thought Top Secret with Val Kilmer was one of the funniest films. I haven't seen it in some time now.
I actually think Dirty Work has some great moments. I know, it's really stupid, but funny.
I got a blast out of Frankenhooker. The scene where all the prostitues are exploding from smoking Super Crack is the best.
The Big Lebowski is one of the greatest comedies. The scene where the Chief of Police in Malibu hurls the coffee mug at the Dudes head is hysterical. My friend and I watched that scene over and over, laughing more each time.
Army of Darkness is a fantastic comedy. Each time I see it, I laugh at so many different sections. And I must've seen it over 10 times by now.
Woody Allen films can be good comedies. I think Play It Again, Sam is his best for sheer comedy. Perhaps Sleeper, though. Eh, I could go on and on. There's so many good Woody Allen films.

Posted - 03/30/2004 : 21:17:51 I love Swingers and Made, two of my all time fave comedies by actor/writer/director John Favreau, with great performances by Vince Vaughn. I never get tired of watching Made.
Rushmore is one of the funniest, most oft qouted movies around my crew. Freaking hilarious performance by Bill Murray, and great script by Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson.
Meet the Parents is one of the best studies in awkward comedies I've ever seen. Love the performance by Owen Wilson.
I think Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a very funny movie, and really well made.
I just watched Old School again, and granted it's stupid, but man is it funny. "Ah Denver, the Sunshine State. Gorgeous, gorgeous!".
As for older films, the movie "Clue" is fairly rare, but a real gem. Truly funny, and I catch something new every time I watch it. Which has been about million times thus far. |

Posted - 03/30/2004 : 17:14:56 I had the same problem with "Dumb and Dumber", Spudboy. Others have mentioned a bunch of 'em, but I like:
Airplane Blues Brothers Army of Darkness Monty Python (entire library ) Blazing Saddles The Jerk Young Frankenstein Kentucky Fried Movie/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Killer Klowns from Outer Space (hillarious B-horror/comedy) I'm Gonna Get You Sucka Pootie Tang (You can't hurt a ho with a belt...they like that shit. I'm gonna sine your pitty on the runny kine. Sa da TAY!")
Tons more, but I don't seem to be able to handle my glass and a half of wine. I'm all thunk out.
edit: another -it's a different breed of comedy, but one of my all-time favorite movies is "Bringing Up Baby".

Posted - 03/30/2004 : 17:08:18 Ok, so I'll deepen my reject status and just say it...I don't get "Dumb and Dumber". I couldn't watch it. I thought it sucked. I tried - really - to like it becuase so many people who I respect love it so much...but I can't. Most of the other movies listed above hit near the top of my list, so what am I missing? I loved the Three Stooges, Andy Kaufman, and most of the foundational comedy it was built on. Oh well - what the hell.
I would also add Schizopolis, Army of Darkness, the Belushi trilogy (1942, the Blues Brothers, Animal House), and Repo Man to the good list.
