i disagree. the whole "when they're older" angle in kaufman's original script seemes a little too obvious. i'm surprised that i prefer the movie over the original script.

I think this would have been a much better ending.

INT. SECOND OLD WOMAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

The old Clementine is unconscious on her bed, hooked up to
modern versions of the erasing machines. Two young
technicians monitor the equipment. The woman's bedside phone
rings. Her machine picks up. After a moment:

OLD MAN'S VOICE
Hi, it's Joel. What's going on, Clem?
Why won't you call me back? Please call
me. We need to speak.

The machine clicks off. One of the technicians reaches over
and presses the "erase" button on the machine.

BLACK.

THE END

Just the fact that it had Tom Waits references. :)

how can you tell if the script was a better if you only read parts of it?

The movie was great, but the script was even better (though I will admit I only read parts of it). They cut a lot of things out to make it more friendly for anyone. There was a lot of talk about Tom Waits in the script, all of which was omitted from the film, though we did see Rain Dogs for a split second during a montage of items which reminded Joel of Clementine. I thought the soundtrack could have used some Waits. I also thought the very ending of the movie was kind of a letdown. and www.imdb.com says:

The original script featured a cut beginning and ending sequence that took place in the future. In the end, an older Clementine comes in to have the procedure done and a look at her screen shows that she's had the procedure done multiple times and all of them involved Joel. At the very end of the script, an older Joel calls Clementine to ask why she hasn't called, but the technicians performing the procedure erase his message. Other cuts in the original script include a montage of memories people wanted erased, including a soldier seeing his dead friend on a battlefield and a girl who was raped at a young age.

What do you think about Claire Denis? She is supposed to be THE arty director here in France, and I truly hate her films.

Michael Gondry is extremely talented. but Patrice Leconte is nothing to be ashamed of. and the guy who did my favorite film of 2003, SECRET THINGS, Jean-Claude Brisseau..

one of my favorite cinematographers, Lance Acord, is french.. he's done some amazing work (BUFFALO 66, BEING JOHN MALCOVICH, ADAPTATION, LOST IN TRANSLATION)

plus AIR are French.

see, you Frenchies got a lot goin' on.

Carrey's performance in Truman Show was really moving, too.

Michel Gondry is a wunderkind and our French pride, among lots of very pretentious and talentless French filmmakers.

I have to agree with you, Monsieur. It was flat, IMHO. It could have been so much better with more complex characters and less time spent on the psychological mechanisms. It relied too heavily on the trippy factor. Very much like "Being John Malkovich" -tricky and quirky, and lacking the character and story depth to make it really work. That said, the moviemaking (cinematography, editing, moments/scenes) was amazing. Some really beautiful work.

Yeah, Carrey surprised me - he was way better than I expected.
Monsieur Posted - 10/10/2004 : 13:47:57
I saw the film today. I was a little disappointed. Carrey and Winslet and Gondry did their job very well, but I think Kaufman fucked it up a little. Some parts of the film (like the one where he's trying to hide her in an obscure corner of his memory) are clearly too long, and there is nothing left to understand in the film after the first 15 minutes.

The scenes on the beach are very nice.

Carrey is a good dramatic actor.

Please, people.
You HAVE to read the original script.
Download it, print it, read it, then cry, then try to kill yourself because you're not Charlie Kaufman and never will.
You'll find it here :

You'll thank me later.

Haven't seen the movie yet. I don't even know when it opens, here in Kiribati.

It was a little too messy. I would say a lot of people in your average cinema-audience disliked it. Malkovich and Adaptation were a little more upbeat. Not that I was disappointed because it was a gloomy kinda movie, but I just thought it did'nt quite work out. By the way, saw 'Wonderland' the other night, pretty good but it ends rather abruptly.

I was thinking of the train-ride back from Montauk which happened before the opening credits but was chronologically after the Patrick "nice", oops, sorry HPM, your brain is in fine working condition. :)

Clem called Joel nice, the first time around??? Really? I don't remember that. Oh well, whatever.

I think it was more like a subconcious painful reminder, when Patrick called her "nice", because Clem called Joel "nice" the first time around, I think. All potential situations with Patrick must have occurred after the first situation with Joel.

No he wasn't trying to copy him there. That's one reason why she doesn't like the word, 'cos Wood's character calls her it.

Montauk....I remember it now strangely enough, just needed some gentle persuasion, erm only 1 other thing, might just be me being pedantic. When Elijah Wood's in the car with Clem after she freaks out on the lake he calls her "nice" and I was thinking he was trying to copy Joel again, but that was before the point that Joel called her nice.

in the origional script it ends with clem as an elderly woman, and the audience finds out that her and joel have had each other erased dozens of times, and had spent their entire life falling in and out of love

I would guess that elija wood's attempts to recreat her relationship with Joel jogged something in her subconscious that impelled her to hop on the LIRR. It was this same subconscious urges that made her talk to him on the train, i would imagine.

I love montauk. When they were first on the train I was upset because it obviously wasn't a LI train, so I was expecting a 'fake montauk', with some other town substituting for it, just as metro north substituted for lirr. I was so happy to actually see all the familar landmarks of the town. I spent every summer there as a kid.

And it didn't really bother me until you mentioned it Shakey, now I'm taking my 4.2-star rating and changing it to 4.1-stars. Is there anything else that bothered you? Maybe I should watch it again, actually, the timeline was a little hoky, it was neat how they tied it all together with the color of her hair though!
