I installed bittornado and it's working, but it's going slow.
And I mean turtle slow. Downloading a show takes me more than a day, my download rate is only 6 kB/s which I think is too slow for a cable connection.

So is this because of the suckyness of Bittornado?

are there any great programs on the net? (for free?)

help...

I'm stumped. Go to www.sharingthegroove.org and go to the Technobabble section in Audio Bit Torrent Downloads and ask your question there' I'm sure some of those people can solve your problem

my XP firewall isn't on, and I believe my provider has an instant firewall in the line, which means I can't put it of....

well what the heck, just wait extra longer

Nimrodson, I have to say thanks for the step-to-step explanation. Very useful, but since my firewall isn't on, I can't use it.
(I tried, but nothing really happens, couldn't find my IP adress either, I'm so stupid)

I have the default Windows XP firewall and I go to Control Panel - Network Connections - right click on the one with the picture of a lock-box (it's the one that's firewalled - click properties - click the advanced tab - the box that says "Protect My Computer and Network By Limiting..." should be checked (that means your firewall is on). Don't uncheck it as from what I understand, it's not good to turn your firewall off - click on settings at the bottom - click Add - for description of service type in BT or Bit Torrent or whatever is recognizable to you - for ip address type your computer's ip address (if you don't know it go to run and type in "ipconfig" and it shows it somewhere in there - type 6881 for both the external and internal port numbers and make sure TCP is checked instead of UDP - click OK and make sure that on the advanced settings screen BT or whatever you named it is checked - click OK and repeat the same procedure 9 more times using ports 6882, 6883, 6884, etc. instead of 6881.

I hope all that made sense.

and where do I adjust these settings?
because my cable company has a firewall in the line itself
so I don't have a firewall installed on my computer.
Does this mean I'm screwed?

yep. It's actually just however many windows you're ever gonna have open. If you're only going to have one window open ever then you just need 6881, two and you need 6881-6882, three and you need 6881-6883, and so on.

I'm curious about this. I have about a dozen shows I've downloaded recently at Sharing the Groove. My question is: when I'm downloading a show, like now, I note that it also shows my upload rate, which is cool, but does that mean downloaders can also access my other shows (beyond the one I'm downloading at the moment) and upload them from me? I hope so, 'cause that means I'll get a faster download rate myself.

Also, when I'm not downloading, can others still upload from me, assuming I'm connected? Thanks for any info anybody can provide.

People can only upload from you when your window is opened. If you download a show, for example, and keep your window open after it is finished, people are still uploading from you. As soon as you close the window, no one can upload from that show. Of course, you can go back and reopen it later if you want.

Bill, one reason for slow download speeds might be your firewall. I don't really know much about them, but I know you're supposed to "poke holes" in ports 6881 - like 6889 when you are doing bit torrent downloads. There's a lot of information on how to do that in the "Technobabble" section of STG. As far as which programs you use, I'm not positive, but I don't think that affects download speed.

What is the sound and picture quality of the show like? I don't want to download if it is not good I've got a limited amount of data I'm allowed to download on broadband every month.

Homer: Yes. It's a guaranteed way to download all sorts of cool stuff without having to do stupid searches through kazaa. You download a small torrent file which provides info about the the main file you will soon be downloading. You then open the torrent file in your bit torrent program, and it searches for everyone else who is sharing the main file you want. Torrent downloading depends on the bandwidth of the others who are sharing it, and how folks are connected to them, and what you are sharing as well. I started downloading the Breeders show on friday night and was done by saturday evening. Shared through sunday, and then had to remove it from the work computer.

I've been downloading the Breeders show since Friday night, but my modem keeps logging off half way through the night.
