Just aquired their album Star, fairly fantastic album, good for me aswell being a beginner guitarist, some of the songs are pretty simple to play.I'm definately beginning to think that 4AD's an untapped resource. Any recommendations for other good bands on 4ad?

There's a lot of good Belly and Tanya Donelly stuff on Youtube. Live performances from TV and whatnot, as well as all of their videos. A lot of MTV stuff has been yanked from the site, but a few things have stayed on under the radar.

I just got the "Gepetto" and "Dusted"/"Slow Dog" singles in the mail on 12" vinyl. Won 'em on ebay. Good stuff.

I like King way more than Star
King is one of the best pop records of the 90s

Wow, reading back through this thread it dates from when beautysleep was new. Old Skool, man. I loved Whiskey Tango Ghosts, although I haven't given much listening time to her new album.

4AD had a really good year last year, though: M Ward and TV On The Radio were both superb albums, and the Cocteaus retrospective was great as well.

They are, aren't they. It's the voice. She stops me in my tracks.

Thanks fbc. I had the solo mp3s there but not the Belly stuff. Some of those solo demos are deluxe.

I prefer 'King' anyday

Lovesongs for the underdogs was a let down
the newer 'Beautysleep' is a 'masterpiece' maybe the best album she ever made. Although I think 'King' is the most commercial record on 4ad ever, even more than Last Splash

I agree with the Slow Dust EP -- it was fantastic. I was a little disappointed by the sound on Star. The Slow Dust versions of those songs kick the Star versions to Hell and back.

i think the slow dust ep is my favourite belly release.
the versions of dusted, slow dog and low red moon are far superior to those on star.
and i think the b-sides from both albums are phenomenal - john dark being my all time fav.

I found Star in a library a while back and copied it to mp3 (slap my wrist). I think its gorgeous, its got a really sparse but beautiful sound to it. Untogether, Stay, Gepetto, all good songs.

Cocteau Twins are good on 4AD, and thars a load of good bands on CV: Wedding Present, Violent Femmes, Pixies/FB obviously, Grant Lee Phillips, Seafood is a good new one. Obi are pretty cool too.

There is something wrong with "King", but I'm not sure what it is. It has some great songs like "Puberty" "King" and "Now They'll Sleep". But I think if they just put together all the B-sides from "Star", that would've made a better album.

Another great 4AD artist that hasn't been mentioned is Mojave 3. They have a great alternative folk sound to them.

I like Lovesongs quite a bit, though for some reason I always think of it as Tanya's sell-out album. It's pretty slick compared to Belly material, but there are some songs on it I just can't get enough of (Manna, for instance).

King is kind of a strange album. It has some of the absolute best Belly songs (Seal My Fate, Superconnected, etc.), yet it pretty much falls apart during side two. Plus, Glyn Johns' (who worked with the Stones and Zeppelin) production and Tanya's songs are a very poor match. He made the band sound tired and muffle-y.
Stuart Posted - 03/29/2004 : 04:01:05
I think King is a little more radio friendly than Star.... haven't listened much to eihtre of them for about 7-8 years, but loved them when they came out. I'll have to download Lovesongs for underdogs, I was always wandering what that album was like.

Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about?
switchy Posted - 03/28/2004 : 14:13:33
I've loved that Star album by Belly since it came out. Then I finally bought the follow-up King a few years ago after seeing it in the 99cent bin. It didn't really do anything for me. but maybe i just need to give it more listens.
They've got some of the prettiest album covers ever.

Fans of Belly might also want to check out Letters to Cleo / Kay Hanley, Rilo Kiley, or Calamine (catchy free mp3 of "trampoline" there 1/4 way down the page)

What about REMA REMA? I think that was the first 4AD record, and it's a great one (especially side 1).

I lurve Belly but I prefer the album KING. The Bees is such a pretty song. And I love the first and last songs on that as well. They are all good - yay! I also love Tanya Donellys' solo album LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS. It's really good.
offerw Posted - 03/28/2004 : 07:19:37
I haven't listened to Star in ages but I loved it when it was released and listened to it way too much.

I've recently discovered The Red House Painters through their retrospective compilation on 4AD. Not all of it is brilliant but I'm addicted to Katy Song at the moment.

Tarnation's Gentle Creatures is a forgotten 4AD release which I love. It is an "alternative country"(I hate this tag) album which seems out of place on 4AD but it is realy good.

Cass McCombs!! Their album 'A' and single 'Not the Way' are both excellent.
Cocteau Twins are also worth a listen to.

Take a look at the whole Beggars group.
