I'm starting this thread because I do not want to stray futher off topic on TheCroutonFouton's topic. I was a horror flick junkie as a kid, I guess part of the thrill was getting hold of these films because they were usually 18 restricted. Phantasm and Jaws were the first two films to scare the daylights out of me and since those two I was seriously hooked for a few years.

I know Alfred H made the best early horror films (Psycho is a classic) but during the late 70's early 80's there were hundreds of gory, bloody films around, some were truly awful and some are now cult classics. They don't make them like they used to nowadays. I'm trying to remember some films to add to my DVD collection. These are some which I can remember: Phantasm, Jaws, Piranha, The Omen, The Exorcist, Amytiville, Hell Night, My Bloody Valentine, Graduation Day, When a Stranger Calls, And Now The Screaming Starts, Tarantula, The Swarm, Carrie, The Shining, XTro, Night of The Living Dead, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Some more?

I saw Dawn Of The Dead tonight, its really not as bad as I imagined it could have been. Good fun, and dead entertaining. Satisfyingly gory in parts as well. Lots of 'boo', make you jump kind of frights rather than Alien-esque suspense.

Alien, I'd forgotten that, thats very scary.

Most importantly, I saw a trailer for 'Shaun Of The Dead', a new RomZomCom, starring Simon Pegg (from Spaced). You just know thats gonna be fantastic.

Recent faves: 28 days later.
Also bought The Thing (Kurt Russell) recently. Good stuff. Good video game too.
Except when Wilfred Brimley freaks out. Stick with the oat meal commercials Wilfred.

I'm off to see the new Dawn Of The Dead tomorrow, for some reason. Is it any good?

Like I said the film as a whole is pretty scary, the beggining in particular is quite um...emotive shall we say, sort of "how horrible would it be if that happened", with some ultra lame screenplay 101 characters and some lameo other bits and pieces it kinda falls flat against the original as a complete film. Its an entertaining movie nontheless. The screenwriters last job was penning the scooby doo movie!

Not that I mind.

No, really.

I don't feel old at all. LEAVE ME ALONE!

Oh, and nobody mentioned Hideo Nataka? I saw "The Ring" recently and thought it was pretty good.

For dirty, extreme and dumb horror flicks, I think Italians are hard to beat though. See Lamberto (not Mario) Bava: "Demons"... And Lucio Fulci was pretty hardcore too. He had a very disturbing obsession with punctured eyeballs (maybe it was meant as a Buñuel reference...).

I mentioned the original Ring in 'The 100 Greatest Movies' topic.

Demons is very scary. I haven't seen it all but what I saw was very scary indeed. There is also a sequel too. I will have to get them out sometime.

Did Lucio Fulci make Zombie Flesh Eaters? I heard a lot about that film as a child but I saw an edited version on T.V once and thought it was crap. I woldn't mind seeing the unedited version though.

I remember seeing an X-ray of a guy's skull with a nail lodged inside it in some magazine before. Is'nt the human condition amazing? Although I'm not sure I can withstand the current barrage of horror-remakes....

We've missed out on all the European and UK horror flicks (all films actually) during the 70's and 80's due to cultural boycots. I've grown up solely on American cinema and TV. Bad huh? I was overwhelmed when I discovered European cinema during the 90's and I'm still catching up. From this thread I've now picked up a whole bunch of films I'll have to go check out.

American Werewolf! Now there is one which I've forgotten about, it was savaged by the censors before being released here.

Scanners is another one which I've just remembered. The exploding heads caused a huge uproar......

Nail Gun Massacre! Now that sounds like some realy crap movie I just have to see TarTar.

Audition - amazing, and repulsive. I *STILL* havent got round to seeing the ring, i really want to though.

I agree, the stuff coming out of japan is pretty good. Something about the juxtapositon of shots they use...really gripping and unnerving.

Great stuff

I was 6 and living in Boston when "Last House on the Left" came out. Even the radio ads used to scare me: "Keep telling yourself, 'It's only a movie, it's only a movie...'"

I saw "Last House On The Left" and I agree with TarTar, although I'm not sure I'd call it "decent"... I mostly remember it as an excuse to show scantily clad females (people like Sean "Friday The 13th" Cunningham and Wes Craven originally came from porno after all), a bit of sadism and a lot of lame comedy... On the whole, I think Wes Craven is way overrated. Apart from "The Serpent and the Rainbow" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street", which is of course a classic.

A really bad one (among thousands) was "Parasite" by Charles Band. I loved the bit when the "parasite" of the title (a disgusting blob of quavering sickly organ part which was vomited by some character at the beginning of the film) hides in the toilet bowl and attacks a televangelist from under. Wheeee!

That was one of the crappiest ones I ever saw, along with "The Toxic Avenger" (which was deliberately crappy though, as are all Troma films). Oh, and "Cannibal Holocaust", which I thought was total crap - although Deodato might deserve credit for inventing the actual-footage-found-in-the-forest concept that was later recycled into the first "Blair Witch Project".

My brother once saw Hershell Gordon Lewis' fabled "10.000 Maniacs" (1966, one of the very first "gore" movies); I seem to remember he found it laughable, but young people are so blasé...

Oh and I'd forgotten a good one: Clive Barker's "Hellraiser". SpudBoy's mention of "Nightbreed" (which I think is excellent, alhtough more fantasy than horror) reminded me of this one.

Oh, I forgot Sleepaway Camp. That's a fun one. I got a kick out of it. Supposedly the guy who directed that is making his first film since Sleepaway Camp, which came out in 1982 I believe. The new film is supposed to be the official sequel to Sleepaway Camp. Wonder if it will be any good. He'd have to bring in some crazy twists to have it be as cool as Sleepaway Camp.

TarTar Posted - 03/25/2004 : 05:34:17
I thought Last House On The Left by Wes Craven was pretty dope. What's especially strange about the film is there will be these horrifying sequences, followed by these weird comic-relief type scenes with music playing that sounds like "Little Jewish Princess" b Frank Zappa, even though the movie came out long before the song. If anyone has seen this film, they will know what I mean about how odd these two moods mesh together to make a decent horror flick.

I thought Jeepers Creepers had a lot of potential. The first half hour was awesome. Then it all fell to shit.

I almost want to consider Eraserhead horror, just cuz the baby and the tone of that movie scare the hell of out me, especially since I don't believe I've ever watched the film while sober. I always manage to get stoned when I see it.

I can't really think of any others that haven't been mentioned yet. If you want to see a REALLY bad horror film, try to find Nail Gun Massacre. It's so bad that it's funny.

No, it's not scary, but it's funny/disgusting... Horror movies aren't all scary, and all scary movies aren't horror (see: Robert Wise, "The Haunting").

I wanted to add: William Lustig, "Maniac". The scene where he goes on his mother's tomb and... well, it's an old trick but it did get me.

I thought "Event Horizon" was really scary too. I wasn't expecting it at all either- I thought it was gonna be more sci-fi, but it was really creepy.

Well ok but I couldn't mention Evil Dead without AoD....And as for The Hills Have Eyes, watch it and then go hang out in a sparsely populated desert area. It will pop into your mind very quickly. I agree the movie isn't as stellar as it could be, but it remains embedded in the phyche for those special moments.

Malax Posted - 03/24/2004 : 18:47:53
I recently watched the remake of Dawn Of The Dead, it (like TCM) wasn't so much a remake more based slightly on it. To be honest it wasn't all bad and although on the whole the original is better, I was more frightened by the remake. I've been having some really rough zombie nightmares recently involving myself, friends and family. Its pretty lame.

Army of darkness a horror?
The hills of eyes was pretty crap as well, great concept, pulled off not so great. Its a hard genre is horror.

The dad from (I used the fat to create the two kids out of.....) Kenan and Kel was the lead in the original dawn of the dead. I'd forgotten how shit the acting in that film is.

The Hills Have Eyes
The Serpent and the Rainbow
Nightbreed (more sci fi to me, but still fun)
Meet the Feebles (Peter Jackson at his zenith. Tough to classify as horror unless you grew up on the Muppets)
Evil Dead 1/2/Army of Darkness
Faces of Death 1-6+
Anything by John Waters
most Disney stuff (well it scares the crap out of *me* that someone comes up with that stuff)
