Posted - 03/23/2004 : 07:07:10 I've read so much about Johnny Cash it is high time I start trying out his records. I've checked on allmusic.com and he has an allmighty catalogue. Where do I start?
P.S. I've downloaded his version of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's I See A Darkness. I like his voice but the Cash version doesn't quite match the original (which in my eyes is one of the most frightening songs ever.)

Oh, I actually grabbed the other pick that was there. But mine was broken and Casey got a complete one. Orange Dunlop, thin pick. |

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 11:47:20 Speaking of Joaquin Phoenix, his best friend, and future brother-in-law, is Casey Affleck, the actor and Ben's brother. I stood next to Casey Affleck at a FB & The C show at Lilli's in Somerville MA when DITS came out. Spoke with him a little before the show and he grabbed Frank's pick at the end. He was alone and seemed like a big fan. |

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 11:29:22 i think the God CD is missing the most important of Cash's religious songs:
"Jesus Ranch"
It was a big day on Jesus Ranch He was harvesting a big tomato it was in the sand
I'm taking a walk in the woods and it's nice outside Smells of shit a fliga ging gigagigagiga wigawo
I come upon a silver striped mushroom and I falala-ly ly-ly And i fly, fly
It was a big day on Jesus Ranch I fell in love with a baked potato And I started to dance, yeah, in France
I'm taking a walk in the woods, fuck yeah! It's nice, very very, nice Smells of shit fligagigagiga gigowoah
I come upon a silver striped mushroom and I falalalala ly ly-ly and i fly, fly falalala ly-ly la-ly and I fly
a fligagiga rigag guhu riga ga ga gu ru ga guu riga giga gu hu yeah!

Reese Witherspoon will be playing his wife.

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 08:25:40 I think starting off with a three disc set may be a little overwhelming. I would start with live at Folsum Prison or any sort of late era live album. It's makes for a kind of greatest hits album and he was just so good live. Actually, the first Johnny Cash album I got was called "Greatest Hits Live" and I believe it was recorded in Poland. Thus the numerous "Hello Poland" remarks. |

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 07:28:37 With a catalog as widespread and diverse as Mr. Cash's. I would say the best starter would be : Love, God, Murder , a 3 disc set which you can find here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004TB88/qid=1080055040/sr=8-5/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i5_xgl15/002-0454398-4267230?v=glance&s=music&n=507846
This gives you the best look at three individual but all imprtant aspects of Cash, his songs about love and the human condition, his glorious and very cool gospel leanings and of course his "I Shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" side.
I'd say this is a great start.
