Posted - 04/01/2004 : 01:02:13 they're joining the EU on May 1. but they're not changing to euro currency just yet - think later this year, so best tovisit before then cause the prices will skyrocket.

Posted - 03/31/2004 : 15:53:19 Being way out of it living out here, is Czech Republic a part of the EU yet? I'm thinking about taking my wife over to Europe in the nearish future for a holiday, however if it is not in the EU then there is not much chance of her getting a visa (mind you thinks might have changed now that we are hitched).

Posted - 03/31/2004 : 08:31:54 Good to hear you had a great time, it's a nice place isn't it. The bizarre thing about the food is that I am not at all a fussy eater, but must have gone to dodgy restaurants. Did you manage to creep into any Strip Clubs after you tucked your wife into bed??

Posted - 03/31/2004 : 04:16:10 prague was wonderful, Benji ! I didnt really know what to expect till i got there. The sights were amazing, i mean we were only there 4 days but we could have been there an extra week - we crammed so much into 4 days, it would have been better with more time to take it a bit easier. We did the castle and surrounding area on the only day it rained (doh...typical !) The only thing that ruined it that day were the hoards of Italian & French schoolkids (obviously on school trips)who barged past us on plenty of occasions, though you get that kind of thing with any schoolkids anywhere.
the czech beer in lots of places was 25 crowns (50 pence or thereabouts) and heinekin/bud about 50 (about a quid), and i dont know where you ate, stuart, but we didnt have a bad meal all the time we were there. Though friends of ours who were on the same flight said on the last night they had a chinese meal that was still frozen in the middle...
people there arent overly "nicey nice" though its just their way. The metros are a great and easy way to get around. Plus its cheap as chips.
took loads of pics on my digi camera but i havent had chance to do anything with them yet !
plus i managed to see the Chelsea v arsenal game at a nice irish pub (rocky o'reillys) !
I would recommend Prague to anyone !

Posted - 03/31/2004 : 01:35:19 thanks homer - i was pretty damn chuffed with it....especially cause we spent about an hour in the freezing freezing cold standing on the bridge using the bridge itself as my tripod...
and carolyn, dunno what might be on then, but if you got time, make your way out to Kutna Hora and the Church of Bones....very bizarre.

Tesco..... I miss British Supermarkets, you get nothing like it out here, no place where you can wander in and purchase a scotch egg, or a a packet of worcestershire sauce twiglets. You wander into a supermarket here, and you can buy live turtles and fish, which they practically kill in front of you.
There is a Carrefour here, but in terms of western food it's a pile of shit.

Posted - 03/22/2004 : 04:37:04 ohh see I love shopping, and when I saw Tesco marked on the Prague map, I thought it was hilarious they'd have a shop with the same name, until I actually realised it was a proper one!! good lord...
and I agree.. a damn fine one! although the queues were a bit bad when we went. They did some good food there.. we got four tinnys, some crisps and a sandwich, went back to our hotel and tried to play along with Czech 'Who Wants To Be a Millionaire'. |

Posted - 03/22/2004 : 03:08:44 hope this isn't too late, I found Prague wonderful.. really cheap too. I don't have the names of the pubs I went to, so I'll try find them later, but local pubs are best..
I'm vegetarian and had no problems with food as well - mind, our hotel did good breakfasts. Beer cheese is good, although mine had an anchovy on it, but it wasn't on the food itself... so not too bad :)
When you get in at the airport, get a pass, you'll use it - you can use it on all transport around Prague - if you get to the main exit doors, keep walking to the left, there's a stall. This pass will cost 200 Kc, but it's worth it (that's for a three day one). Then get the bus from outside, which will take you to the last stop on their tram network, and you can get about on your pass pretty easily from there.
Good places. Charles Bridge - don't forget to rub the brass plate on the lucky statue. I did, and I was lucky for a while. Charles Bridge is really cool too, and you get great views. There's also a tall Eiffel tower copy type building at the top of a hill, which I don't remember the name of, but you should go up there for views of all over Prague. Also check the castle out, lots of steps to get up there, but also at the bottom of the steps, near the British Embassy there's some good little pubs.
Also, and you'll laugh, Prague has a Tesco. It's the same as the UK one, except it has slightly different stuff. Good for getting supplies of things to keep in your hotel room anyway... and they do some cheap beer deals. They don't take Clubcards though (yes, I checked, I'm sad like that).
I can't remember much else, I'll try find out the names of the good bars, oh and get a seat at the pub next to the clock in the town square. That's quite fun to watch when you feel like being a proper tourist! |

Posted - 03/22/2004 : 03:06:41 Prague is awesome.
we were in Beer-Heaven.
the other guys have pretty much covered most things, but i have to recommend a restaurant we went to and loved. it was called "East-West" and was just off Wensales (sp?) Square to the right looking up towards the Museum. incredibly cheap and oh, so delicious.
also, try as many of the different beers as you can. don't just stick to staropramen cause thats the one you've heard of - it is not the nicest one by miles. and since it's all so damn cheap, it's hard not too.
we never had to use the metro when we went - we just walked everywhere. we were staying quite central, and it is such a beautiful city we never felt the need to use the metro even though it was well below freezing.
i also suggest taking a river cruise...very interesting.
1 word of warning - don't buy beer-spirit. it's what they get when they keep on distilling beer. 50% alcohol and it is shit. but buy duty free booze on the way back to the UK - it is very very cheap.
have fun.

Posted - 03/20/2004 : 17:24:40 Prague is a nice place, although what struck me as odd about the place is that the local people there never smile! Places you should visit are as mentionned before the Castle, and the Old Town. The Jazz Clubs are very good places to visit, cheap beer, cheap cigars and a really relaxing atmosphere. Prague is great for its bars! Of course there are the porn stores and the strip bars / brothels, but seeing as you are going with your wife then these will probably be bypassed (saying that you will not be able to avoid the people hanging around on the street handing out leaflets, whilst shouting out 'Live sex show.').
One word of advice, try and find a couple of decent restaurants early on in your break, or you'll be eating shit for the holiday and this takes away some of the good aspects of Prague. I found the food there pretty bad (and I ain't a fussy eater) and we didn't really find a decent restaurant until the second to last day there.... a lot of the days we took to eating McDonalds because the food in alot of restaurants is very low quality. Thats my only bad experience with Prague.
Enjoy yourself, it's a really nice place!

Posted - 03/20/2004 : 14:04:03 You're gonna hate me but I forgot the name of the bestest bar we went to just off the Old Town Square. We got pissed off with the tourist bars and asked a taxi driver to show us a 'real' local. He dropped us just off the square and it was downstairs - dead cheap and good crack.
All the old stuff is a must in the day time. If you're going this time of year don't forget to have some hot wine - served on the street stalls. Guided tour of the Old Town and Castle is worthwhile.
If you're getting a taxi from the airport - try and get a shared minibus. They're state controlled and get cheaper per hear the more passengers are in it.
The metro is cheap and gets you around with no hassle - remenber to validate your tickets as the inspectors check tickets constantly.
Have a ball!
