I just had my first encounter with ostrich meat. It was pretty tasty. It had the consistency of beef, however, it was slightly spicier. Anyways, just wondering if anyone else had eaten ostrich or anything else that varied from the normal diet of western civilization. (no dog or monkey brains of course)
Yeah,... Ostrich Rocks. Doesn't taste like chicken and you can ride them too. Just curious.

Have you been to China Crouton?? All that you mention above is standard food here in Beijing.... Alligator is maybe a little harder to come by, however there is a seafood restaurant about 100m from my apartment that has an Alligator pit (with about 5 live Alligators in), and every Tuesday and Thursday they kill one and cook it. The first time I went in I was walking through the restaurant on my way to the toilet when I noticed that the floor felt a little different. As I looked down I almost shit myself because I was standing on a piece of glass and underneath me were these alligators in their pit. As you can imagine it was a bit of a shock.

My wife likes chickens feet, eel etc. But that stuff to me is disgusting. I sometimes wonder whether the Chinese started eating that stuff not because they liked it but because during the cultural revolution they didn't really have any choice in the matter, it was either eat it or starve to death. And after years of eating they have developed a taste for such food.

I went through a phase when I got here of trying weird food. The strangest food I have eaten out here is either Ducks head (with tongue), pigs feet, cows stomach, lambs tendon, dog, donkey, or pigs throat. But thats nothing, if you go to a hotpot restaurant you'll often see people ordering pigs brains, which if you are squeamish is disgusting to look at, let alone taste.

One thing though, Ive never had cock! But it is widely available in alot of restaurants.

Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about?

Please don't misunderstand me Dave, I entirely understand the fact that someone finds it horrible to eat an animal that was alive...but why shouldn't we eat eggs?

NO!!!

I didn't like alligator much, it was just like a big lump of fat. Kangaroo is delicous though. Wild boar is also good, as is shark. Swordfish is my favourite though.

I also like black pudding, Cheeseman.

I heard aliens eat vegetarians because their systems are cleaner. They are much leaner and it's like (to them) eating a super vitamin pill.

I read it in Fortean Times.

I don't really understand how anyone can really take any pride or pleasure in this.

You aren't eating 'stuff'. That's your brain disconnecting the animals you're used to seeing from what's on the plate.

You're eating creatures. Beings who, not too long ago, had a life on this planet, not unlike your own. (Probably in horrendous conditions.)

If you're going to eat other beings, at least give them the respect of addressing them as other creatures, rather than 'things'.

I once ate deep fried worms as a youngster after reading the classic novel "How to Eat Fried Worms". It was kind of like stale Funyuns. Not highly recommended, but if I was going hungry I would do it again. Sea urchin is good in a looks-like-mustard-but-tastes-like-ocean-jelly kind of way. In the context of sushi it works. Same with flying fish eggs, salmon eggs, etc...One of the better oddball treats is Sweetbreads. These are the thymus glands of cows, sheep, or pigs. I had cow flavor. They were awesome. I also second the vote for black pudding. Groundhog is damn fine eating, even if a little greasy, and opossum stew is ok. For squirrel, cooked in a black pepper gravy with dumplings is incredible. The brains are the best. I used fight over the squirrel skull with my cousins when it got fished out of the pot.

Oysters and clams are odd? Ooh, hehe, two more for my list *grin* Squirrel is alright, I haven't had the spicy variety, though, so maybe I was just unfortunate. I've had crickets before..as well as ants. I was fooled into eating them though...they were baked into the "chocolate chip cookies" at outdoor school. Damn 6th grade teacher...his name is Mr. Potter..but it's more like Mr. Pothead. Mmm...crawfish are good! I just wish each one had more meat on it. You have to catch so many of those little bastards for a single meal...

A friend of mine in college accidentally ran over a Copperhead snake on one of our trips through Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky. He filleted it and we sauteed it in butter in the college dorm kitchen. It was pretty good!

Stuff I like: ostrich, snake, snapping turtle, turtle soup!!!, alligator, oysters, clams, shark, eel, squid and octopus, squirrel (very tasty in spicy sausage), quail, venison, buffalo, escargot, crawfish (and their heads), wild boar (bacon).

Stuff I'd like to try: jellyfish, chicken feet, groundhog, (o)possum, the elk tenderloin in our deep freezer...

Not so good: pig brains (fooled by phys. ed. teacher, who said it was scrambled eggs - gross!), raw quail's egg.

Some stuff I'll never eat unless I'm fooled: chitlins, dog, primate, rocky mountain oysters, bugs, larvae, blood pudding (never again!!), SPAM (never again!). I'm sure there's tons of stuff I could add to this list.

666 Dunkin' Donuts, a 20-inch veggie pizza from Gumby's, extra jalapenos on the side. And a case of Asahi Dry -

I've had Ostrich, its dead tasty. We had some steak and sausages as well.
Aside from that, nothing too unusual - I had biltong the other day: its like a meat concentrate, what more would you want?! My mum reckons its like eating a stock cube...
The only others would be traditional dishes such as black pudding and haggis, they are seriously good eating.
EDIT: I just found a link to the recipes for these, if you're interested.
Black Pudding: http://www.bobjude.co.uk/bobjude/recipes/blackpud.html
Haggis: http://www.smart.net/~tak/haggis.html#T1
Notice how the various haggis recipes are "sorted in order of increasing use of animal parts that would normally be thrown away"!

Dave Noisy will be horrified at this topic.

Haven't had much in the way of uncommon meats. I've tried ostrich before; one of my friends bought some and made hamburgers out of it. I've had buffalo meat; it's very much like regular beef only with a gamier taste to it. I've had lots of wierd seafood, although many of you have probably had the same before: caviar, calamari, octopus, eel, etc.
offerw Posted - 03/19/2004 : 22:10:56
We've huge ostrich farms over here, these birds can be pretty dangerous though.....kick you to death. The meat has become quite popular, red meat but much leaner than beef and therefore healthier. There is a restaurant close to my house where the chef does "Afro-Parissian dishes" He cooks ostrich, crocodile and does a mean Springbok carpacio.

I've seen those chicken feet being cooked in a township cafe once, the menu had them down as "helicopters". Some of the patrons talked of the dishes as Zola Buds......... it made them run!
