Got me a digital camera...I wanted to get one before my England trip cause I'd be retarded not to. I got a Canon A60, a sweet little 2 megapixel camera. It was a tossup between this one and the Nikon 2100. I could have gotten the Nikon for $130, but I got this one for $173. It has many more features and manual controls, so in the future when I learn more about the camera, I can have more control over things. The A60 and A70 have gotten really good reviews and come highly recommended, so I had to get it. Plus I got a free 64MB compact flash card from Best Buy! That was icing on the cake...when I saw that, that sealed the deal. Anyway, I really really like it. I took some nice pics. It has this awesome Stitch Assist mode (which I love and use a lot, and the Nikon didn't even have it!) for panoramic photos. I took some nice ones, check em out below:

Am i the only person with an Olympus digital camera? I've got a C700, with the 10x optical zoom..love that.

Next digital camera i buy will definitely be one of those new SLR types. Very cool.

To be fair the Asian guy didn't want to fight. It was him I was protecting from the rocker meathead.

Portobello and Camden. Portobello is a lovely place. You can tell there is a lot of money there, but there are so many bargains to be had. I could have spent so much more than I did.

Just wanted to say I've had nothing but pleasure out of my Fujifilm Finepix 40i. Great hires shots in a consumer level camera, nice and slim/light (though as a result, no optical zoom), and an MP3 player. This little guy came in VERY handy in my European Escapade back in 2000.

I've been in one of those in Manchester. What they were playing was as far from 'indie' as possible. The Darkness?! It was horrible. horrible!! I think it was called '5th avenue'. or something like that. 'manchester's number one indie experience'. the name put me off at first, but i went in anyway....

erm, no you haven't been in one of those. i said cool alternative indie club, not 5th ave... sheesh!

yes, 5th ave is like that how you describe. good for cheap drinks and bit of a meat-market... but i wouldn't really call it an indie night... certainly not alternative. 42's isn't much better. hence i go to smile, where they don't play all that madchester rubbish...

I had a Canon Powershot S10, and though it took high quality images, the color sw was horrible. I did a lot of research after dling the firmware upgrade (that was supposed to fix the oversaturation/red/magenta/blue issues, and the flash problems, but didn't). I discovered that it was not an uncommon problem. It made me very sad because I really wanted to keep it. It had great ease of use, was very economical for the time (2.1 MP, around 1999), and I had grown so accostomed to it. However, too many of my shots over the years randomly came out blue, drained of all other color, and the faulty proprietary (and expensive) battery was also a big problem.
Some people have not had the color issues, which is a puzzle, so I guess it is the luck of the draw. When I first got it, I took a lot of pictures of the southwest that turned out beautifully, and every once in a while something would turn out well since then, but it definitely degraded, just randomly. I have to say that it still takes amazing black and white photos, so I still use it frequently. I've read that Canon may be having better success w/their color sw in newer models.

I now have a Fuji Finepix S5000, 3.1 MP, recorded 6 MP, which I love. I did a lot of research, because I hated to leave the old camera on the shelf. Rather than go on and on about it, as there are a bunch of reviews out there, but I do want to say that I have had absolutely no problems w/this camera at all. It takes beautiful pictures, and has tons of features. It's the closest I'll be in a long while to having a digital SLR. You can use it in full manual mode, it has a movie mode, and the zoom is much better than my old camera (22X - 10 optical, 2.2 digital). It also uses regular or rechargeable AA batteries- a major plus. Also, I should add, I loved the photostitch function on the old Canon -you can do the same with the Fuji! Here's one review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilms5000/

We were able to buy it for $330 (incl. 16MB XD) from newegg.com, an extra 256MB XD was $100, and w/the purchase of a $29 USB card reader, there was a discount of $34.95, so the reader was free, plus an extra $5 off!

Some of my old Canon S10 photos are here, under "selected B&W photography", and also the whole album of Hatteras photos was done with the Canon S10 -the last page there has a few color shots that came out ok: www.discordis.com/gallery

Images taken with the new Fuji S5000 are under "new Fuji photos" http://discordis.com/gallery/album01 . I'm still getting used to it, but even before getting over the hump in the learning curve, I'm already really happy with the results.

London rules. I would live there, if I could manage it.

In other news, I have the Nikon 2100 and it's very cool. I'm super happy with it. Anyway, Jim, now you can get a Fotolog. It's free! And fun! www.fotolog.net

Happy shooting!

I've heard alot of good things about Canon digital cameras. Those pictures look really good for 2 MP! I am probably gonna get a 4.0 or 5.0 megapixel Canon at Best Buy soon. Three of the guys in the digital camera department at Best Buy all like Canon cameras over Sony or any other brand.

yes, what does manchester have to offer?
i've never been there, but a friend of mine's first experience of the UK was manchester and she very nearly flew right back to NZ.

i have to say it's right at the very bottom of my 'places to visit' list
just below liverpool.

i'm fairly certain that the reason jim's coming is not because of the buildings.....unless 'buildings' is Brighton slang for something i don't know about...

but Brighton was very lovely when i went.
to be close to the sea again was a godsend after being away from it for 4 months...
and to top it all off, i had the BEST pizza i have ever eaten, and it was only £2.75.

sounds like you got a good deal with the free memory there El Barto.. those pics look good.

i wanted to start a topic asking for advice on digital cameras.

i'm thinking about getting one of the Casio's.. either the EX-S2 http://exilim.casio.com/s2model.htm

or the EX-Z3 http://exilim.casio.com/z3model.htm

you can get the EX-S2 for like $150 online, and the Z3 for $250.. but then extra memory is more of course.

they're tiny cameras, the size of a credit card.

does anyone swear by a particular camera? or have any experience with the Casios?

IceCream Posted - 03/16/2004 : 21:55:52
I know nothing about digital cameras at all. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the pictures.
