I had the worst experience in my performing career this last weekend. Our band played for a wedding, and I had laringitis. I'm the only one in the band who can do harmony vocals, and I was so ticked off. I play bass, so I had that to occupy me, but I just felt worthless. Plus the vocals sounded empty. I guess it's not that bad of an experience, but it just annoyed me. What are the chances I would have laringitis on that day. Stuff like that makes me mad.

Any other bad performing experiences out there?

I'm a fsh with no i's.

yeah I thought the same thing. I just wasted about an hour with the whole thread history. Funny, my friend had a Surf Punks record back in the 80's. Had a great line "Some dick ripped my stick...that guy must be a prick" which is the only thing I remember from the album.

MrGrieves you get the detective of the year award. (Noteworthy?) (although I thought it was in the bio of my website which I posted here enough to almost be banned from the forum for spamming) Oh ya I'm not Dru or Dennis. I'm uhhhhh, (also in the bio.)

Misleadtheworld, I'm not "Jello" but you can do it!!!! You really can figure it out. Try harder.

MadDawg, is this you:

As the name would indicate, the Surf Punks combined two emerging sounds of the late '70s -- punk rock and surf revival. The band, fronted by Dennis Dragon, personified the surf's up, lighthearted West Coast attitude -- they were even featured in a PBS documentary demonstrating "California Beach English." The Surf Punks' irreverence, immaturity, and skepticism of outsiders came shining through in songs like "My Beach," "No Fat Chicks," "Teenage Girls," and "Locals Only." The band's self-titled debut in 1979, made on their own Day-Glo label, became a cult classic. Epic came calling and the Surf Punks peaked with My Beach in 1980, before sinking into self-parody. ~ Ron DePasquale, All Music Guide

The action is also accomplished to a fabulous soundtrack, with music direction from Dennis Dragon (who is kin to Daryl Dragon of "Captain and Tennille".) Dennis' group "Surf Punks", which released several albums and appeared in "Under The Boardwalk", also make an appearance to bring the story to a dead halt by appearing in a crude music video for their song "My Wave". But overall, the music fits perfectly with the dreamy direction and atmosphere.

Mad Dawg, don't take this the wrong way, but how old ARE you?

Pretty old. I beat Eddie Van Halen in a battle of the bands at Devenshire Downs when we were teenagers. I won the BIG trophy, he won the small one. Like I said, I was in the FIRST punk rock band from So Cal that sold out a major venue.

Hey Mad Dawg, who are you? Do we know who you are?

I would normally post a link to my website but on this forum of neverending questions, but no self disclosure, that is called spamming. If you were playing music in the early 80s in Los Angeles you would have heard of me. If you lived in Malibu during that era, (home of the stars)and were a guitar player you would know me personally. I am a legend in my own mind.

RockMusic84, it was EXTREMELY humiliating. I had so many people convinced that I was the chit that I actually believed it myself. I had bad dreams about albinos (seriously) for ages. He started off slow when we were trading licks but within a couple of minutes I'd used up my best ones. He hadn't even gotten warmed up yet. Then he took out a slide and made me feel even more retarded. I went into kind of a brainlock and kept playing the same stupid lick over and over. Then he started doing it in harmony. Even my girlfriend was laughing. There was basically half the record industry there. Although almost 30 years ago every once in a while at parties I still have to suffer through the story. Actually I probably did play better than him when I wasn't drunk, BUT, I was ALWAYS drunk!!!!

Mad Dawg, you saw and PLAYED with Johnny Winter? Awesome! He's a great guitarist (as I'm sure he demonstrated). His album "Second Winter" (with his brother Edgar) is amazing, especially the song "Memory Pain". I think your friend may have done that to you just to show you that there are others in this world who can blow you away in a second flat, so don't get a big head. He probably just wanted to keep you grounded. It seems mean at first, when friends do stuff like that, but in the end, it's for our own good.

MY worst performance moment was with my last band. July 2nd, 2003. It was to be our last gig. Rhythm guitarist was drunk, and swearing, saying mean, stupid (although sometimes funny) things to the crowd. His guitar was out of tune, and he wouldn't fix it (and wouldn't let anyone else, either). He was mad at the engineer, because he told him before the show that the amps didn't have to be loud, that he'd take care of that at the mixing board. So he turned his amp up, anyway. So he was loud, out of tune, screaming and moaning (as opposed to singing), and to top it off, he was staggering around like a moron, and he kept bumping in to me. I could barely move as it was, the way I was positoned onstage, and he only made it more difficult. The lead guitarist was playing my guitar, because his was in the shop getting repaired. I cringed as I watched him bash away at my strings. He eventually broke the bottom 2, and those happened to be the ones he needed to solo on a lot of the songs. The drummer was disgusted as it was, with the way things had been going in the band, but despite that, he played damn well. We were so disorganized. We didn't even know what songs we were playing. The rhythm guitarist completely ignored the setlist, and once he started with whatever song HE wanted, we'd just have to go along with him so it wouldn't sound bad. During our last song, all of the lead guitarists strings were more or less broken, or so out of tune that they would've needed to be replaced anyway, and the rhythm guitarist was on his last legs. So it was basically me (bass guitar) and the drummer, holding the whole damn thing together. The last song we played has a bass part in it which requires a lot of precision, and at the time, a lot of attention (I'd only been playing a few months, so I had to watch what I was doing), which was bad enough, but I could barely hear myself onstage (they put a direct box on my amp) so i had to rely on where the frets where to make sure i was playing it right, and the drummers beat. The drummer and I were the only ones in our right minds. In all fairness to the lead guitarist, though, it wasn't his guitar, so he wasn't used to playing or holding it, so it had to be a little uncomfortable for him to play. But the rhythm guitarist was just out of fucking line! After the last song (which really wasn't the last, we were SUPPOSED to play more), the engineer said "O.K. guys, that's it, it's time for the next act, thanks". He just wanted us to get the hell off stage. All that wasn't even the worst part, though. After it was over, the little crowd of people actually applauded us. After the rhythm guitarist taunted them, and made a complete ass of himself AND the band, they still applauded us!! Even if it was pity, they STILL applauded us!! And what's the least that the rhythm guitarist/singer could've done? Say "THANK YOU". But nothing. After the show was over, he, and the rest of the group abandoned the stage. The rhythm guitarist didn't even pack up his shit, he was so out of order! I did! At the end, I tried to say "Thank You" into my mic, but it was never turned on.

So...who had the worst performance moment?:)

Oh man....a few weeks ago, I played an open mic show w/ my band, and I had the onset of laryngitis. I sounded fucking HORRIBLE. I do some harmony stuff, but a good deal of lead vocals as well. I had to wuss out on the high notes, replacing them for lower ones. It was hellish.

My voice sounded hoarse, empty, and frankly quite grating. I felt like the guy from Nickelback, in other words.

A LONG time ago I was invited to play with a mystery guitar player at an entertainment industry party. My friend/lawyer told me I was to trade licks with this old blues guy and make him look like an idiot in front of everyone. I got there and thought I had been duped into playing and singing as a trio. After about a half an hour of impressing the crowd with my insane blues licks and golden blues voice this old, skinny, tall, albino dude walks up and asks where he can plug in and what mike he should use. His name was Johhny Winter. He made me look like an idiot in front of EVERYONE in town.

A couple of weeks later when I stopped crying I called my bud and asked him why he had done that to me. He said he wanted to make sure I didn't believe what people were writing about me and was hoping to get me to practice harder. I've never fully recovered. I HATE albinos!

I played a show with a horrible sinus infection that made it so I could barely talk. On top of that our bassist bought me drinks before the show and I was drunk, but apparently it was still a great show, from what I've been told. I do know that I was taunting the crowd quite a bit.

"Hey fuck you if you don't like it."
