the first song i really liked as a kid was "daydream believer" by the monkees. when my parents found out i liked this, they gave me a ton of old beatles records. this is what formed my tastes when i was 4 and continue to influence me to this day

One time I fell down a well and I started singing "OH LONESOME ME" and I was apparently a really awesome singer because Simon Cowell came by the well to get a drink of water because he was thirsty and he heard me and he said "THAT WAS PATHETIC" except he was talking about the well water, not me because about me he said "THAT WAS INCREDIBLE...YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO HOLLYWOOD" but he wasn't strong enough, being weak and English, to pull me up out of the well and so I started singing "OH LONESOME ME" again after he flitted off and a FIREMAN heard me and lifted me up because he was a strong American US Firefighter with Big US Muscles and so I guess in a way you could say that "OH LONESOME ME" SAVED MY LIFE because if I wouldn't have been singing it I would have not gotten rescued and I probably would have starved, rotted and decayed and infected the drinking water of the town.
In that scenario, I guess you could say "OH LONESOME ME" was the song that saved the life of a whole TOWN. |

Live Through This is definitely a kickass album. There are some rocking songs on it...like "Gutless", "Credit in the Straight World", "Violet"....that and 'Pretty on the Inside' are the Hole albums that I will actually listen to and enjoy.
as far as the Babes In Toyland rip-off, I think the only rip-off factor was the baby doll style that Kat and Courtney had. Purely superficial. I thought the bands (though both readily classifiable as agro-grrrl-rock or whatever) had their own distinct styles....though Kat Bjelland definitely has a better voice (i.e. she can actually sing. well.) |

Live Through This- Hole.
This album has got me through many a shitty day. I know Courtney is pretty shit now but this is one allbum i cannot live without. I don't care who wrote it or that fact that Hole are a blatant Babes in Toyland rip off.
I just love the anger and venom, i know there pleanty of other angry album but i first heard this album when i was 13 and it changed my life. |

I'm including very brief explanations and greatly abridging my list, because I'm at work and the amount of non-work-related typing that would warrant would probably be greatly frowned upon.
Let me just throw out a couple:
Nirvana - Territorial Pissings (for the exact same reason that El Barto mentioned "Breed"...btw, Barto, Babes In Toyland RULE. i still love em, but that shit was so raw and powerful back in the day. I hold them in high regard.)
Sonic Youth - Starpower (I awoke in the middle of the night, on a friend's floor, and he was smoking a joint with this song on...i was kind of in a half-sleeping state, and the sound of Kim's voice plus the noisy/melodic guitars just blew my mind...very hard to describe in words)
Pixies - Rock Music (one of the first Pixies songs I ever heard..before that, I had heard parts of "Monkey" and "Here Comes Your Man" but they didn't really stick out to me enough)...once I heard this song, though, it hit me like a ton of fucking bricks. I was like "is this even the same band?"...........................the rest is history

horse stories is one of my all-time favourite records.
i am still annoyed that i missed out on seeing them live back in '98 at uni in NZ because i didn't hear about it until the next day.

Well, odd as this may sound, I was saved as a musician through the not-so classical pop-rock-opera hit Phantom of the Opera. Moved me from conformist/listening to what everyone else did to what I like, and instead of quitting piano because I was bored of the Royal Conservatory's selection, I kept with it and played stuff that I enjoyed.
Then John Williams came along with the Imperial March, and the world seemed to open in that there was a significant catalogue of stuff that I loved that noone else really seemed to, and I hated all the radio garbage already at this point, so it was nice to have something moving. Also further fueled my piano career.
Then, Motorway to Roswell and Ed Is Dead both came along and I made the move from the 'any rock/punk/alt/whatever made past 1980-something is garbage' into the place I am currently at, the realization finally dawning that just like the masses did not appreciate my classical tastes, they also did not seem to appreciate the really good music STILL BEING MADE.
The first FB song that hooked me was Freedom Rock, first listen. I remember Los Angeles as early loves too.

well, that is somehow cheap, but pink floyd's "time" gave me some support or direction i needed. although i don't listen to floyd much now, for various reasons "atom heart mother" saved me sometimes and the whole "animals"-album formed my way of thinking of people in general (which is sad but i can't be helped...)

I heard it on Beavis and Butthead in a time in while all I listened to was rap and whatever else my sisters listened to. I had my mom get me the tape through either Columbia House or BMG. The front cover had a naked female doll on the front which my sisters made a fuss over. I think I was 11 at the time, and I have a cassette of me talking which I say my two favorite albums are that album and Dr. Dre's "The Chronic." That was a major turning point in my life.
Nirvana - Breed
Heard it in the car while driving around with my sister and it blew me the fuck away. From this point on, rock music was the light, the way, the life for me.
