For me, I went to see They Might Be Giants at the Fargodome in Fargo, ND (a mid-sized stadium where they play college football). The odd thing was that they opened for Hootie and the Blowfish! So, I pay $35.00 to see They Might Be Giants! Absolutely no one knew who these guys were...but me and my friends were like going crazy when they were playing. That's the only time I've seen them in concert.

Any other odd pairings out there?

I'm a fsh with no i's.

Yeah, Cat Power live is pretty weird. I saw her in Brussels two years ago: rambling on for minutes about star signs before she even played one song. Stopping right in the middle of a song, saying "nah I don't feel like playing this one after all, it's too depressing". Pretty bad overall actually.

I went to Lou Barlow solo three days ago. That was also very odd, but at least in a good way. Almost like stand-up comedy in parts. Forgetting his lines and starting over again in the middle of a song, asking a crowd member to tune his guitar because he couldn't manage it properly himself, stuff like that...

Would have to be either The Daughters (which I think I posted about before - lead vocalist ended the set by masturbating) or Slipknot at the Hammersmith Apollo while being massaged (though admittedly much of that weirdness was self inflicted).

The first time I saw Dillinger Escape Plan play live was pretty damn weird too. The sound was pulled at one stage because 2 kids were racing each other to climb to the top of the tent (this was at Leeds Festival last year) and there the standard mayhem that comes with the territory with Dillinger Escape Plan.

This is bugging me because I'm sure I've seen weirder - I just can't remember it.

it's either SFA in Wolverhampton (policemen and brides playing brass instruments and other such giant animal nonsense) Flaming lips the first time I saw them in Leeds (it gets boring every time) or Gomez in Manchester (Giant weird blow up triffid roaming the stage)

i would vote for Dead Can Dance in 1995. some people from the crowd were really insane, and Lisa Gerrard is really strange on stage.

Television, last year, it was almost for free the show, because it was a kind of a celebration party, the crowd was very small and you could see that most of the people didn't knew them. It was very good to see them but also sad.
How can this happen to a band like that!

first time i saw blur(liesure tour). damon albarn was so drunk he ended up cutting himself with the mic stand. my friend got on stage by accident (?) and ended up having to go right by damon and do a little stage dive and damon stopped singing and said something to the effect of "um, wosh at guy doeen?" "ee jumped, look ad that one, ha!"

another wierd one was butthole surfers opening for nirvana with bobcat goldtwait mc-ing. strange dudes all 'round. gibby haynes left after getting hit with a prosthetic leg, about 4 songs in, just dropped the mic and walked off stage. the next day i remember hearing on the radio a guy call in asking if anyone found his leg he lost at the nirvana concert last night. that night was the first time i heard nirvana play "man who sold the world" and some dude overheard me saying it was a david bowie tune to my friend and starting freaking out on me saying "nirvana doesn't do covers! they're the best band in the world, they don't need to do covers!" wierdo!

CHECK THIS OUT:

What time I was at the warped tour, and this crazy band was playing on a very small stage underneath a tent, amongst the concessions. I believe the band was called Death by Stereo. So this lead singer is going insane. He jumps off the stage and starts racking everybody with his microphone cord. My buddy Jo Jo gets right in front of the guy and starts headbanging in his face, and then the singer goes even more insane as he runs to a nearby trashcan and starts hurling trash out of it. I got hit in the head with a bottle. I think it was more scary than odd.

Pablo Picasso never got called an asshole.

for years, i said the weirdest show i ever went to was primus/buck-o-nine/powerman 5000 back in 1997. but now, my ol' dirty bastard/dillenger escape plan/runner and the thermodynamics show HAS to take the cake for oddest pairing. it was the cmj marathon, it was free to get in, it was bizarre. and i got hennessey poured on me by buddah monk!

This thread deserves a second chance.

Frank Zappa. Good. But weird.

Carolyn, the Bay City Rollers were not weird in concert. They were great!

i would agree with the flaming lips.
their stage show is very bizarre, and from the 1 show i went to, much more interesting than their music.
worst gig i have ever been to.

Gwar, Slaughterhouse & Rawmeat

Fear FActory, Biohazard & Sick of it All - this one ended with a huge fight between SOIA and the audience, very scary.

Suran Song In Stag.

I'm assuming that most people here have never heard of Suran Song In Stag. They are a husband (bass) and wife (vocals) group, and they have a new drummer every week. In fact, they finally have opted to use a drum machine for touring. They hail from New Jersey. Suran Song is the name of the singer in the group, and for performances she dresses in an Indian (Native American) outfit, and the bass player, well, he is in a cowboy outfit, with a horsehead on the headstock of his bass. He's heavily influenced by Mike Watt. Suran will pour fake blood all over herself and do Indian dances during her performances. She is amazingly charismatic. Their music is very hard. It is a multi-media show with slide projectors flipping through all sorts of stuff while they perform. Their Cowboys and Indians theme symbolizes the bullying basis of American culture and how it all goes back to that initial conflict. They are possibly the most political band of all time, they'd certainly give Fugazi a run for their money. If you go to their website, www.cruelmusic.com , you'd get a taste of this. Their shows are absolutely incredible, and their music is awesome, too. They cover a lot of material, like Gang of Four, Throwing Muses, The Jam, 10,000 Maniacs, and a bunch more. But they have a great deal of originals as well. Really nice people, too. I've met Suran Song at a show and communicated with Will (the bass player) through e-mail quite a bit. They're recording a record with Martin Bisi (who had produced Sonic Youth and Cop Shoot Cop to name a few) right now. If you ever see that they are coming to a venue (i.e. coffee shop or bar) near you, I highly suggest checking out their performance.

Frank Black opening for the Ramones.
Lenny Kravitz open for The Cult.
The Cult open for Billy Idol
Frankie goes to Hollywood. That's weird in itself
Ben Harper open for PJ Harvey
Beastie Boys open for Madonna
Motley Crue with Heather Locklear sitting in the sound tent. (Not a fan. I took my little brother)

Patti Smith at the 930 club in DC was pretty strange...

She played songs, busted out a clarinet for some noise, rang a gong, and broke out into poetic verse randomly... It was quite the show.
