This is a topic that I haven't seen too much of around here. I must begin by saying that I am not much of a drug user. My experimentation with mind-altering substances is limited to alcohol and marijuana. I have tried mushrooms one time. I didn't trip, but I had a body buzz going, and it was a beautiful experience. I've also tried opium and DMT, but I didn't really feel anything different when I tried those, besides for maybe a moment of bubbliness.
As for pot, I never really did drugs in high school. I tried smoking pot once and nothing happened. When I got out of high school, I started hanging around people who smoked, and suddenly it seemed like it was everywhere. In the group that I hung out with, the music to listen to while stoned was Pink Floyd. Ooooh, so original, I know. But a lot of that music was still relatively fresh to me at the time, though I honestly spent my personal time listening to Ween, Zappa, Queen and Sublime. But Floyd really was the shit back then to listen to while stoned. There were so many levels to the music. I have become a bit cynical towards Floyd's music since I feel they are overplayed, but back then, my ears and mind hadn't yet been exposed to the true underground sound that is just so much nicer than the sonically ubiquitous. So Floyd was amazing music while under drugs.
Ween was quite a trip, too, especially the early stuff like The Pod. For those of you who know The Pod album, there's that song Molly. Oh man, I remember laying on my bed with headphones on, baked outta my gourd, listening to that, and just laughing hysterically at the fact that these two guys went to the trouble of recording such a fucked up song. And I'd heard the song hundreds of times before that. My brother says that he never truly appreciated Ween's music until he heard them while stoned. Then he understood what angle they were coming from.
The thing with being stoned is that I'm so much more in tune with the senses, especially how I hear things. I can actually appreciate the different layers that are going on in the music, I can seperate them, and then see how they all fall together as a whole. I just think so much more heavily on things when I'm high. This can be a disadvantage, like when you smoke down with someone who you don't know too well and they're a bit strange, and then they just seem weirder and odder and they begin saying paranoid things and acting odd. That can be unnerving to be thinking heavily on what's going on. But when I can just relax and enjoy music or a movie while stoned, and just appreciate the artistic side of it, weed is a magical thing.

ISIS are a kind of heavy-metal post-rock band.

Will do yeah. It was a pretty friendly crowd, got chatting to a few people. One lad went to see if my mate was OK when he was curled up in the corner, rocking back and forth, pretending to be breaking down. I thanked him anyway and he saw the funny side of it.

Damn that Robocop arcade game sure is hard when you're pissed.

I'll try and let you know when I am next in but we tend to leave these decisions very late. We're an indecisive bunch.

Hey BBB2! We went last night and had a really good time. Thanks for the recommendation. We will definately be going there again. And you were right, absolutely no Madchester. He played Stellastarr*'s 'My Coco' for me too which had me dancing like a maniac before anyone else.

Shame you weren't there. Hope your cold clears up!!!

You should check out the new album by your compatriot Melissa Auf Der Maur (ex Hole bass player). It is called Auf der Maur as is her new band.

The album features most of the old Kyuss crew and was produced by Chris Goss. There are around 6 or 7 classic tracks on there and they sound like Rock Anthems the first time you hear them.

I saw her band, which I think is mostly Canadian in London a couple of times in February, they are very good and you should try and see them if you get chance.

Yeah I have that album and it's very good. I'm going to see her at Manchester Uni on 12th April. Should be good.

I don't remember anyone saying that there were crap indie clubs in the south. Gee you're on one tonight girl.

I suspect that London has many good clubs, more than Manchester but then it is a lot bigger so it is to be expected really. I am going to London on 19th of this month for two nights. It's all part of my borthday celebrations and I can't wait. I have looked into which clubs to go on Friday and Saturday night, but any recommendations from a girl with such obviously impeccable taste, would be greatly appreciated.

And you know I love Brighton 'cos I have said it before. It's the best place in England.

Hey Barto watch out! Your girl is asking after other guys. It's obvious she wants him.

Ahh it's all good fun though Simon. I will no doubt be making a bigger tit of myself on Saturday. But then it is for my birthday.

I think I am gonna change my request now, but I am not sure to what. Can you not ask the DJ in person, later on, for a request?

There a couple of new tracks that I wouldn't mind hearing in a club. Does he play much new stuff?

Oh by the way I meant the club South but I assume she doesn't otherwise you would have twigged.

you should defo say hi. he might play that for you, there's a request sheet, get in around 11pm if possible and put it down... heck i'd dance with you!

erm, he was 'feeling' the music i think, hehehehe, dancing to "who's got the crack" i was later told... one of the guys was trying to convince us to dance on the bench for ages, as he was wasted, but in the end we gave in and got up there... and ended up looking like tits...

I think I might pay a visit this Saturday night for my birthday celebrations. I'll be the stupidly pissed one, dancing like maniac to the Pixies songs they play. I hope I am not alone in that though.

Do you promise they won't play any Stone Roses, Oasis, Happy Mondays or Charlatans?

I noticed Cheeseman is conspicuous by his absence.

Should I assume, therefore, that you believe EVERYONE from Manchester is a knobhead, Cheeseman???

Hey, what do people outside of the UK call scallies? I want to figure out if anyone I know is pure evil. Maybe I myself fall into this category...

Nothing is ever something.
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 03/08/2004 : 15:53:03
Come 'ere Cheesebell you little bastard!! I'm gonna punch your lights out!!!

Hehe, only kidding. I think I know what you mean (or I'd better or you're in trouble). There are a lot of knobhead scallies and lads who think they are better than scallies, but really just have a little more money and are actually no better (ie - they can afford real Burberry instead of fake). Three scalies had a fight at my bus stop on my way home from work today, right next to me. I moved eventually 'cos I didn't want them to throw a stray punch, but I was deeply saddened by the whole event. You don't actually see much violence in Manchester but I think it helps that I try and stay clear of the pricks. I just hate scallies with a passion, they are the most pointless evil scum in all the earth. Well perhaps not worse than Saddam and Hitler. Though at least they had a mission, even if it was evil as fuck. Scallies have no mission, no drive and are STILL evil as fuck. Most of them are just too chicken-shit to act upon their evil fully.

Ooh you've gotten me started now!!!

But you must realise that my rant then was about scallies in general, not just Manchester scallies. They are everywhere. Even where you live Cheeseball, wherever that is!!!

But if it's not for the scallies, why else don't you like people from Manchester?

to sum up...

£2 in with student id (or claiming to be student), £3 without
£2 for a double shot (whisky or vodka) and a mixer
lots of pixies (on request), pavement, sonic youth, hefner, early pulp, suede, blur and so on... mixed bag really, as it gets later they start playing the electric sixs, and franz ferdinands of the world...
sometimes have bands playing acoustically downstairs...
not a massive place, but a good crowd or like-minded people! no stone roses or monkey dancing in sight!
