Last year Nicole Kidman won for her fake nose, This year Charleze Theron wins because she becomes ugly. Its all full of shit. Beautiful actresses making themesleves ugly and getting awards for it reeks of the other fad of male actors playing dimwits and retards and getting awards. Fucking shit, this crap is one of those things that keeps the masses stupid.

Judi Dench WON for Shakespeare in Love as well.

I agree with Adnan that Titanic's clean sweep at the Oscars was a joke. I just want to mention that Charlize won the best actress award at the Berlin fest too.

....MY POINT WAS.... if it was not plain enough, that these awards are given more on the basis of 'gimics'....and I did see both films, I loved both Monster and the Hours, but think that other performances get overlooked.....and that the sexed up, hit you over the head, 'I am an ACTOR!', 'sit in awe at my transformation!' parts seem to always win while true and subtle substance parts would never be aloud to get the awards because the idiot masses would freak out.... Judi Dench keeps getting the nomination nod by the way, and it is for a reason.

But it does happen a lot.

Hey, a Pollock poster just arrived in the mail today. Not quite sure where we're going to hang it though.

I didn't watch the Oscars because it makes me nauseous.

That film was good because it sort of explained the onset of the mental problems. And, of course, it was a true story. Very well played though.
I had a friend who's seen David Helfgott play, apparently he's just like that in real life.

The Oscars are buulshit. Think about it, Titanic won all these Oscars, it's one of the stupidest films I have ever seen (I actually only saw the first half and the end). If you want to see really good films, check out the Berlin Golden Bear. It's definitely the best festival.

Have some wine, please, don't run away.

Was Geoffrey Rush ever nominated for Shine? He was fantastic in that movie.

Any time an actor gains and/or loses a lot of weight for a part they get nominated also.

One of the biggest crimes ever was when Linda Fiorentino wasn't able to be nominated for an award for her performance in The Last Seduction because it aired on television first. She is incredible in that film. Deceitful, wicked, sexy. Good stuff.

There was also a phase where men always won for playing mentally challenged people. Like Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. I think you can always find patterns, if you are looking for them. And the Academy obviously like to award performances where actors are not themselves. Isn't that what ACTING is?

Remember when Meryl Streep used to win every year for her funny accents? Those were the days.

Have you actually watched these two films? If you did maybe you weren't awake. I think both actresses were very good far beyond just their physical appearance. I've never liked Nicole Kidman but she's completely won me over in The Hours. I'm definitely not saying Charlize has delivered the very greatest performance by an actress this year but you must remember these were the Oscars and there is also a lot of studio politics and big $$$$$$ involved in the whole circus. But have a look at all these awards she's won for Monster. You definitely don't win all these just because you "become ugly"

I think Nicole Kidman was amazing in the Hours, and she definetly deserved to win. I haven't seen Monster so I can't say anything about Charlize in that movie.

No, Jim Carey didn't win for Man on the Moon, but he ruddy well should have.
he was superb.

haven't seen Monster, but want too.
saw Lost in Translation last night, and i was quite disappointed with it after reading everyone raving about it....certainly didn't deserve best film, and i can't see how bill murray could have deserved best actor, but i haven't seen any of the others guy's films, so i dunno.

I think that if you watch her performance though, she's not Charleze in anyway, she IS the character she created wholly and completely. I don't know if Jim Carey won for his performance as Andy Kaufman, but it seems in a similar vein.
