OK, so LOTR wins best pic, going against my prediction that it wouldn't/shoudln't. But I like the joke by Billy Crystal that it garnered 11 nominiations..."one for each ending." How true.

I was happy about Sofia Coppola's win for Best Original Screenplay for Lost in Translation and saddened by Bill Murray's loss. But honestly, Sean Penn has been due for a long time now.

It's no surprise that Charlize Threron won Best Actress and as for Best Director...I must admit that Peter Jackon also had it coming. Of those 3 flicks, Return of the King seems the most satisfying and he devoted a good part of his life to making them. Now if he could only undo the whole Dead-Alive thing. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103873/

Billy Crystal was terrific as always. He came in when he was needed; wasn't too pushy nor too corny. His musical numbers were great and the opening film montage was fun. Overall, it was a very pleasurable evening.

You have to understand that I'm very evolved for an American. I virtually guarantee that I've seen more movies than most people. What with Netflix, DVD purchases, working at Blockbuster video many years ago with the free rental policy and dual VCR deck for copying. Since I loathe watching sports, it's the biggest hobby for me. That and collecting skin for my woman-suit.

cvanepps I pointed out that braindead was a much better title than dead-alive and everyone said they had never heard of that title before, damn you all.

What is it with America and titles. Mclusky were going to call their new album Mclusky are fucking dead over here and in the states it was to be called Mclusky are brown bread (which is far more amusing) due to the strictness of such things. They changed it completely in the end.

Yeah, no kidding. I didn't make the facts though - I just report them.

It's really sad that Titanic is up there.

LOTR almost w/ 11.

LOTR is tied with Ben Hurr and Titantic for the most awards ever won with 11.

I was happy Tim Robbins won - he should have been nominated for Shawshank so this made me happy. I still haven't seen that movie though (Mystic River), it looks very sad.

I think all the LOTR wins were kind of representational of the entire trilogy, so it was nice to see them get that.

I would have loved to see Bill Murray win, but with all the good movies he has been doing with Wes Anderson, etc, I think he could still win in the future.

I don't know, I think that King Kong is probably going to be a mistake... that would a very difficult movie to make well in this era, I think.

Not sure that I was comparing ROTK to Brain Dead (which is a much better title that Dead-Alive) per se but I just wonder if he has the slightest twinge of guilt for making such a wonderfully disgusting movie like that, now that he's such a respectable, 3-Oscars-in-one-night man and all. I'm talking slightest twinge of guilthere folks, not full-out guilt. I'll bet he does even if he'd never admit it.

Either way, that's got to be a really enviable position to be in: win a trunkload of Oscars and now the man can do pretty much whatever he wants. I'm looking forward to King Kong.

I think it is superb that LOTR won.
but i mainly say that because I am a Kiwi, so i am rather biased, and proud of it.

i can't really have an objective opinion because i naughtily haven't seen any of the others yet.
But i loved ROTK much more than i thought i would because i am not a fan of these kinds of movies, but yada yada yada.

and i think the Brain Dead etc movies are superb - but it's a bit of a stretch to compare them to Jackson's later works....

I filled in a quiz (guessing who would win) for a movie site with a chance to win a laptop before it started. I cancelled my subscription yesterday wish I hadn't now I must have got about 13 out of 15 guesses right. It was a case of pick LOTR for everything then go for the obvious in the other catergories. Like Tim Robbins wasn't going to win best support, really.

jediroller: I loved Brain Dead (or Dead Alive or whatever) too.
offerw: Jesus Of Montreal was a great movie, but les Invasions Barbares looks awful. I don't want to see it. I'm not excited about the Oscars either; Titanic wasn't that bad actually (except the music), but the fact that Shakespeare in Love won the best movie award is insane.

I liked Robin Williams "Gay Wedding Cake Topper" joke. Leave it to one of the quickest minds in show biz to steal the night with one joke.

And refering to the Lesbian Dreams post - Howsabout that Angelina Jolie? Nipples anyone? Yes Please.

Good for Charlize! At last South Africans start to get some recognition, JM Coetzee win a Nobel prize for lit. and C Theron with an Oscar all within the space of a few months. I must admit that I usually do not get too excited about the Oscars, Titanic was the worst crap ever and it cleaned up at the Oscars right? I would've like to see Lost in translation do better as well. Great for Sean Penn though! I'm curious about the Canadian film for best foreign pic. as well. I see it was done by Denys Arcand. Anyone remember Jesus of Montreal?

What about Dead Alive? It's one of the funniest flicks I've ever seen!

i didn't get to see it. i'm at work, still. yay!

but those results seem fair. Peter Jackson definitely deserves Best Director.

i take the Oscars with a grain of salt though..
