Posted - 02/22/2004 : 08:42:33 When I went to rent Fire Walk With Me, the guy behind the counter didn't want to let me rent it. He advised I watch the television series of Twin Peaks instead. It seems everyone feels this way. Yeah, but I haven't seen the series, and I'm sure it's better, but I thought the movie had plenty of entertaining moments. A particularly creepy moment was when Laura was told by the kid in the little white mask that "the man behind the mask" (I'm guessing that means Laura's father disguised as Bob) is looking for the book with the pages torn out. And then she went home, looked around the house, and finally opened her bedroom door, so slowly, and then WAAAAAAAAH!!! THERE'S SOME CREEPY GUY IN THERE WITH NICOTINE STAINS IN HIS MOUTH!!!!!
Haha. The midget is quite cool, too. I thought Kiefer Sutherland's part was nice and strange. He played a good neurotic forensics guy. And it was great seeing Heather Graham pop into the movie for all of 30 seconds, all cut up and bloody, and then just disappearing like she's not a movie star at all. But still, the movie isn't all that great as a whole, especially if you've seen the Twin Peaks episodes where it tells you basically everything you see in the film, which was a major complaint Joe Bob Briggs had when they aired the film on Monstervision. We don't learn anything new about Laura Palmer's death.
Anyway, discuss.

Posted - 09/23/2007 : 00:35:31 it's funny this Twin Peaks thread has come up recently; a local up-and-coming tv station has just started airing the series, i've waited 17 years for this. it's strange no other station had done the rerun before, i remember a lot of people were glued to the screens the first time and i remember thinking the first and the one before the last episode were some of the most captivating and memorable things i'd ever seen on tv. it's still great watching it after all these years (unlike Battlestar Galactica), i thought it wouldn't look as fresh, with the many copycat tv shows and inventive-style-wannabees that followed (the last one that irritates me is that "random zoom in or zoom out of the speaking actor's face, focus on his/her gesturing hand first then close-up on his/her face.." or whatever that fake impromptu camera work is called), but it does.
i only saw this scene that one time but remembered the song forever

Posted - 04/04/2004 : 00:47:33 The first season was so incredible because untill then I've never seen anything so strange on TV. I loved the theme song, whenever I hear the song I'm reminded of the antsy feeling I got when each show started. Couldn't wait for Monday evenings.

Posted - 04/03/2004 : 19:58:32 i think it would have been cool if MULHOLLAND DRIVE became the television series it was originally intended to be. don't get me wrong, i appreciate the film, but how cool would it be to have another Twin Peaks-esque David Lynch series on TV? supposedly he was going to handle it in a similar way.. writing it as he went along etc.. |

Weird that Heather Graham pops up dead and bloody in the movie, since she was in the last episodes of the show - ALIVE. Wasn't the movie a prequel? I am confused. Also, what did people think of the end of the show? I am still perplexed and disapointed by it.
MAJOR SPOILERS. Scroll past if you haven't seen the ENTIRE series.
Heather Graham isn't exactly dead in the movie. She speaks. She sort of appears as a spirit to give a message to Laura.
In first dream sequence of the series (episode 2 or 3), you'll notice that Agent Cooper is a wrinkly old man in the Black Lodge. In the very last episode, the "good" Cooper gets trapped in the Black Lodge -- the Cooper who gets out and smashes his head in the mirror in the last seconds of the show is inhabited by Bob -- and he'll be there for years and years (which is why he's old in that first dream). In the movie, Heather Graham is talking to Laura from the future to try to change history and prevent Cooper from ending up trapped in the Black Lodge. (She wants Laura to write about it in her diary so that Cooper will see it and be warned, but the pages end up ripped out).
This is also why David Bowie's character in the movie is so suspicious of Cooper ("Who do you think this is there?!"). David Bowie has been to the Black Lodge. When he shows up in the FBI office he doesn't know where in Time he is and thinks the Agent Cooper he sees is the one possessed by Bob. He doesn't know that it hasn't happened yet.
It's pretty simple.
I didn't like Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me when I first saw it in 1992. At the time, it wasn't at all what I wanted to see (what I wanted was a continuation of the series!), but I think it's aged really well. I watch it about once a year. At the very least, the first half hour or so (the Chris Isaak-Keifer Sutherland segments) might the funniest stuff David Lynch has ever done. |

Everything I've read about Fire Walk With Me that gives actual facts has said that the 2+ hour released version IS "the director's cut" and that Lynch wasn't forced by anyone to trim the movie down. All the material left out of the movie (and there is quite a bit, there are original drafts of the screenplay findable online) was left out by David Lynch's choice. (http://home.earthlink.net/~markstewart/fire.cut.html is one source for that. A google search will show others.)
And there is a 3-4 hour version of Dune that shows on television from time to time. David Lynch likes it so much he took his name off of it. "Allen Smithee" directed it.
Season 2 of Twin Peaks is underrated. It gets a bit lame after we find out who killed Laura, but it's still watchable. And the final episode (Lynch's return to directing the show) is pretty freaky and great. |

Posted - 04/02/2004 : 22:43:15 Well, I've heard David Lynch made up the story as he went along. He might've just said that though, cuz it seems like there's a bit of foreshadowing in the first episode. That's all I've seen of the series, though. Just the first episode. The appearance of Bob was quite freaky. That guy is quite scary looking.

I would not be surprised if eventually David Lynch releases a director's cut of all of his material. Have you been to DavidLynch.com ? My wife bought me my own DVD copy of Eraserhead from the site last year. -roger.

Posted - 02/23/2004 : 13:56:39 Season two is great, don't listen to them. The only disapponting part about it for me is the cheesy romantic subplot for James and the rather thin reason Cooper gets to stay in Twin Peaks after the Laura Palmer case is solved. I'm very willing to suspend my disbelief and enjoy the ride.

Posted - 02/22/2004 : 12:29:13 How can you say that, the film tells you who killed Laura. It's the biggest mystery in the entire series.
I would watch the TV series first anyway, its really much better, apart from the second series which fell apart. That sub plot with James (Hurley) and that women who tried to set him up was bloody awful. Whoever wrote that in should be hung up, (please don't tell me that was David Lynch).
I really think Lynch should have had more involment instead of making Wild at Heart which is really only an OK movie. |

Posted - 02/22/2004 : 09:47:41 The reason everyone says to watch the TV series first is because FWWM explains everything that happens in the show, and basically ruins the series if you watch it first.
Kinda like reading the last few pages of a mystery book first.
