Posted - 03/25/2004 : 01:21:40 That's great. It's hard to find someone who's seen this film in France, so I wouldn't never have guessed it would get a release in the USA. I know someone who was in school with one of the girls (the blonde one), and now whenever she sees her she can't help thinking about the movie and the girls having lesbian sex. That must be pretty embarrasing.

I'm responding to a message that's 2 months old, not sure Floop will see this... Floop, are you talking about "Choses Secrètes", the French movie? I can't believe it was released in the USA. That was an awesome movie. I usually dislike French cinema, but I got free tickets for this film and I absolutely loved it. My 2nd fave 2002 movie.

viliande, yeah, CHOSES SECRETES! great film. it was released in 2003 here, so i consider it among the 2003 releases. totally over the top, absurd and surreal (not to mention super sexy).. but very thought-provoking.. i loved it. reminded me of Luis Bunuel in a vague way.. |

Posted - 03/24/2004 : 09:33:28 I agree the movie is over-rated. It’s a very good movie, not a great movie, not a best-picture-contender movie. But, alot of you guys who say the movie is crap are just not judging the movie objectively. You personally, must not be fans of sublte and slow-paced, which is fine. There is actually quite alot going on in this movie, it’s just not big car chases and explosions, that’s all. Everything happening is happening inside the character’s minds. Great writing for sure. As far as I’m concerned the less dialog in film the better. It’s a visual medium so the more story you tell through images the better. If you want snappy dialog read an Elmore Leonard novel. Again, I definitely don’t think this is a “great” film, it needs more drama for that, but I do think it is very good for the story it sets out to tell.

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 20:33:20 No resolution seems to have been reached in that movie. Even though in reality conflicts don't always get resolved, I guess I'm just so used to the closure that you get during most films that I have a hard time with "Lost In Translation." Though it did have some cool scenes. (I really liked the scene where Bill and Scarlett went out partying.)

Posted - 03/23/2004 : 18:45:42 Continuing the conversation from the last thread, I'd have to agree with benji. All the hype kinda ruined the movie for me in a way. I was expecting a terrific movie but it was somewhat unsettling. There wasn't much happening throughout the movie. Not a ton of dialog or interaction...the story didn't play itself very well. It didn't seem to climax anywhere. There was no buildup. But it is an enjoyable film. Yes, very much a "mood" movie...very relaxing.

Posted - 03/11/2004 : 10:28:51 Here's a quote by Stuart, from Belle and Sebastian, on Lost in Translation (you can check out his diary on belleandsebastian.com) :
"Let's never come here again
Hello
How was your Christmas? Was it gruesome? Good. So was mine. Still is. Till I watched Lost In Translation. I mean, people kept telling me I would like it. Sometimes a good sign, sometimes bad. Depends who's doing the telling. I liked it. I'll probably watch it again. Soon. For one reason and one reason only. The lips, the tits, the join-the-dots gaze. I know that looks like three, but it's really only one. Scarlett Johannson. I mean there's not too much else happening in the film, is there?
Funny, I've had some quite similar experiences to the kids in the film. I know you're meant to feel that. Like 'I really could identify with the main character, y'know?' But hey, we can testify, can't we Marisa? Now if I write a scene for a film where the girl busts her foot and the guy has to carry her around the city for three days on his back because she's alone in a foreign land and has no one else to help. they'll just think it was a rip of Lost In Translation. And he takes her to the hospital and she's scared of what they might do to her because she can't understand the lingo. And he has to give her shots because she's too scared to do that too. And it hurts. Sorry. At least you bust your foot over the limit on gin, over the limit on speed. She just stubbed her toe. Nice toe, though.
And I sang a Pistols song in a private Karaoke joint when we were in Tokyo. God, that was so much fun. Mine was Pretty Vacant though. And the video that was playing in time to the tune, showing the words, featured a young woman knitting on a park bench!
We had so much fun on that trip. We just seemed to be in Tokyo for ever, in a fancy hotel. I think because there was press to do. But it didn't seem like we were doing anything. I loved it. I don't want to go back. At least not right now. I feel the way the girl in the film feels when she says:-
"Let's never come here again because it would never be so much fun.."
She might have meant it, she might not have, but I feel like that. Fuck it. I can't sing. I'm still coughing like a consumptive. I'm wondering if this is a sign. Telling me to take some time off to do something else. I mean, Japan's not going to be the same this time. I wanted to go back and do outdoor shows on Sunday afternoons to four generation Japanese families. I wanted to do a Bowlie in the land of the one true Bowlie! May as well give them what they want."
Here's another one :
"A Block Of Marble
It's an aristocratic number, Lost In Translation. Modern aristocracy, drenched in money and cool. I'm not complaining. I like it. It's where she's coming from. No use making a film if you can't handle the subject you've chosen to talk about. She handles it with lazy ease.
Imagine your film is a block of marble. That's to start with. This could mean the idea in your head, the pictures in your mind, or it could mean the blank film stock sitting in the can. It's the metaphorical blank sheet I'm talking about here. What Sophia has chosen to do is to respect the marble. She likes the marble, it's pretty. I like the marble, I can see how pretty it is. No need to go chipping away at it too much. No major stone surgery required. Just reveal casually the film that is hidden within the natural grain of the marble. I don't want to strain to read the hieroglyphics of plot shift that you might etch onto the surface. I just want to sit back and enjoy the whole thing. And with this film I can do that. Easily."

but now i'm back on my usual Jennifer Connelly thing.
here's a good picture of Scarlett though:
as an aside - i heard a rumor somewhere that Scarlett and Bill Murray did NOT get along during shooting at all. more to the effect that he didn't like her.. if true, it's just further testament to Bill Murray's acting genius. |

Posted - 02/11/2004 : 11:51:01 I read that she wrote the character with Bill Murray in mind to play the role. So, if he wasn't actually the real life dude, it was probably someone with a similar personality. Like, for example, Jean-Claude Van Damme. |

Posted - 02/11/2004 : 11:02:32 So this movie is apparently based on Sofia's life, I thought. I wonder who the actor was that reached out to her, if it even was an actor. I watched the making of featurette on the DVD and she seemed so excited when Bill Murray was about to arrive that it made me think possibly he was actually the guy that she had had the experience with in real life. Just an observation that probably holds no merit but figure I'd put it out there.

Posted - 02/10/2004 : 18:36:50 Floop, you nailed it. There is so much time and energy wasted in that film. Sure, it's good, and I can totally appreciate it when someone makes a film and attempts to be legitimatly different. Operation unsuccessful. Way too much filler in this film. I think if you were to take out all of the scenes that really didn't hold up the story, nor were they clever enough to stand on their own based on clever dialog or whatever, that you'd have about a half an hour left. A for effort, D for execution. I lost count of the scenes in the film that were there strictly to magnify the "lost in translation" metaphor. The film that comes to mind, that I thought was in a similar vein, but blew this away was Punch Drunk Love. I wanted so bad to hate that movie, but upon hearing about ten minutes of the amazingly original dialog, I couldn't stop watching it. The dialog alone was so interesting right off the bat, that it could have carried the film alone. "Semi unsure of itself" nails it Floop. Good work...some films don't seem like they know what they're trying to accomplish. This one seemed completely confused. Sucky sucky overrated. Sofia is NOT her father. Same as Kelly Lynch is not her father either.

Posted - 02/10/2004 : 17:25:49 I was meaning to find the topic for this last night after I watched the film. Again I think I was waiting to see something so much more than I did. The bit where they went out on the town made me feel really weird, as though I was there and enjoying this ace holiday. But the rest bored me, their friendship doesn't seem warranted to me. The bit with the singer felt thrown in, felt like it would have been so much better as a book, things moved to fast for it to feel right. The ending was one of those, oh no you better not fucking finish, you better hope thats just a fade out. FUCK! Where's that bitch? kinda endings.
Having said all this Bill Murray is indeed godlike and should win the oscar.

The goodbye they had in the hotel was so unsubstantial, it was barely anything. I think he went after her to say something meaningful and something that would be important to them both.

The brilliance of this movie was that it was real. You could feel the isolation, the drudgery, and thus the spark - the one real thing in their lives was this stranger with whom they were finally able to connect with. Because the acting was brilliant (way to go, Bill), the dialogue and screenplay were well written, and the setting was well depicted. These must surely be the signs of a good movie, and though I'll be the first to say I've seen better, it has been a long time since I've seen one in theatres. Give them a globe for it.
And I don't want to ruin the end, but it was so aHollywood it was beautiful. don't get me wong, i enjoyed the film. i just think it's a tad overblown, and partially due to the lack of good films in 2003. some people talk about it like it was mindblowing.. that was my point.
i'm happy to see a film like this get attention though, in a sea of formulaic Hollywood shlock.
i just don't get people talking about it like it's the best film they've ever seen.
if you're curious, Wong Kar-Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (which came out a few years ago) seems like a pretty big influence on her film. among others.. i don't know if i'd compare it to Dali.. it reminds me more of the photographs of a particular photographer who i can't think of right now.. but nothing in LOST IN TRANSLATION seems really "surreal" to me. dreamy, but not surreal. |
