It's a lung disease caused by exposure to silica or silicon, similar to coal miner's "black lung" disease. I should mention it's the longest word in the english language.

churl ish (chur' lish), adj. 1. peasantlike: The churlish life in olden times was a difficult one. 2. boorish, rude or surly. 3. niggardly; sorded. 4. difficult to work or deal with, as soil. |

Posted - 11/17/2003 : 11:23:16 "holler", as in valley. Bordering on cultural idioms here. When my husband was about 4 or 5, he went to visit his grandfather in Oklahoma. He was from southeastern Kentucky - up in the mountains in Leslie County (some of you may be familiar with Hazard County - heheh). He was playing with a young boy his age who lived a few doors down from his grandparents, and the other boy said "Where are you from? I'm from the Cul-de-sac down the street." My husband knitted his brow and frowned and said "I don't reckon I know what that is - I'm from down in the holler."
(heard this story recounted recently when his grandpa was visiting)
"Regional Note: One feature of Upper Southern English and specifically of Appalachian English is its pronunciation of the final unstressed syllable in words such as hollow, window, and potato as (r). Holler, winder, and tater are merely variant pronunciations reflected in spelling. As a noun, holler has the specific meaning in the Appalachians of “a small valley between mountains”: They live up in the holler underneath Big Bald Mountain." |
