if we're wasting time at work or whatever, we may as well also be doing something productive..

let's try and learn a new word every day to improve our vocabularies..

today's word:

YELLOWHAMMER

Webster's 1913 Dictionary

Definition:

\Yel"low*ham`mer\, n. [For yellow-ammer, where
ammer is fr. AS. amore a kind of bird; akin to G. ammer a
yellow-hammer, OHG. amero.] (Zo["o]l.)
(a) A common European finch ({Emberiza citrinella}). The
color of the male is bright yellow on the breast, neck,
and sides of the head, with the back yellow and brown,
and the top of the head and the tail quills blackish.
Called also {yellow bunting}, {scribbling lark}, and
{writing lark}. [Written also {yellow-ammer}.]
(b) The flicker. [Local, U. S.]

A nice word I tripped over in the Serafin review Cheeseman posted in the FB Live section:

"nous"

Function: noun
Etymology: Greek noos, nous mind
Date: 1678
1 /'nüs also 'naus/ : MIND, REASON: as a : an intelligent purposive principle of the world b : the divine reason regarded in Neoplatonism as the first emanation of God

Vicissitude
noun
Change or alternation; one of the ups and downs of life.
Man, you could have some serious fun googlewhacking with these.

Or how about PNUEMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS.
I learned this word in the 7th grade and never forgot it for some reason.
It's a lung disease caused by exposure to silica or silicon, similar to coal miner's "black lung" disease.
I should mention it's the longest word in the english language.

I've been seeing this word everywhere it seems lately..
ful·crum
Date: 1674
1 a : PROP; specifically : the support about which a lever turns b : one that supplies capability for action
2 : a part of an animal that serves as a hinge or support

Love the churlish - good texture to it, crunch crunch!. Thanks for reminding me of that gem. :)
bedrock_barney Posted - 11/17/2003 : 12:46:29
I have always thought that churlish to be a good solid word to be used as much as possible to describes one's working companions and people you meet on a daily basis.

churl ish (chur' lish), adj.
1. peasantlike: The churlish life in olden times was a difficult one.
2. boorish, rude or surly.
3. niggardly; sorded.
4. difficult to work or deal with, as soil.

OK, OK, word for today:

Fugacious - Lasting a short time; volatile.

I thought it was the "gooch"

apl4eris Posted - 11/17/2003 : 11:23:16
"holler", as in valley. Bordering on cultural idioms here. When my husband was about 4 or 5, he went to visit his grandfather in Oklahoma. He was from southeastern Kentucky - up in the mountains in Leslie County (some of you may be familiar with Hazard County - heheh). He was playing with a young boy his age who lived a few doors down from his grandparents, and the other boy said "Where are you from? I'm from the Cul-de-sac down the street." My husband knitted his brow and frowned and said "I don't reckon I know what that is - I'm from down in the holler."

(heard this story recounted recently when his grandpa was visiting)

"Regional Note: One feature of Upper Southern English and specifically of Appalachian English is its pronunciation of the final unstressed syllable in words such as hollow, window, and potato as (r). Holler, winder, and tater are merely variant pronunciations reflected in spelling. As a noun, holler has the specific meaning in the Appalachians of “a small valley between mountains”: They live up in the holler underneath Big Bald Mountain."

"Hogwash"

"Balderdash." I like that word. It's an expression roughly meaning "bullshit."

It just so happens I was reading about Yellowhammer in my daughter's state book earlier this week. Alabama is the Yellowhammer state and the state bird is the yellowhammer, because during the Civil War Alabama soliders wore yellow (I don't know why) and so they were called Yellowhammers.
