I love Frank's use of language, especially his use of words you normally wouldn't find in rock and roll lyrics.

So I thought I'd list a new Frank word every day (or so), with its dictionary definition and its specific usage by The Man. Feel free to add your own.

(Hope it's ok I'm posting this under General Chat. Looks like no one uses General Frank Black Chat anymore.)

There was a Jack who coiffed it
He came from my home town
He was a prophet
Some kids they put him in the ground

Got coffee
Got donuts
Got wasted
Erased head

And what do they say?
He's not afraid of the present tense
And talking back is a bad defense

I gotta move
I gotta break
I gotta move
I gotta get me cross the lake
I gotta move (x4)

stretto, noun and adj.

From Italian, meaning "narrow" (related to "strait")

As a noun: "A section at the end of a fugue in which successive introductions of the theme follow at shorter intervals than before, increasing the sense of excitement."

As an adjective: "A direction to perform a passage, esp. a final passage, in quicker time."

Used in “Bad Harmony,” Frank Black and the Catholics:

We don't know what we're talking about
That's just words in our libretto
I don't know if the sum of our stretto
Will end up a terrible shout

pelagic, adj. (also a noun)

From the Latin pelagicus, meaning "of the sea." Also has roots in Greek.

"Of or relating to the open sea, as distinguished from the shallow water near the coast; dwelling on or near the surface of the open sea or ocean; oceanic. Now chiefly: (Ecol.) designating, relating to, or inhabiting that region of the sea which consists of open water of any depth, away from or independent of both the shore and the sea floor (and so contrasted with the littoral and benthic regions)."

(there are other, related definitions pertaining to sea birds, whaling, etc.)

Used in “The Swimmer,” Frank Black and the Catholics:

In division pelagic
You were choragic
