I think Nirvana (Kurt) contacted him once or twice prior to this. In this letter, Steve is just laying out the criteria for WHY he would agree to do it. Kind of the opposite of begging.

Apparently, recording In Utero did have a big financial strain, as many of his previous and potential new clients assumed he was now a HOTSHOT PRODUCER unavailable to unknown bands, when in fact 90% of Steve's clientele was (still is?) unknown bands. And I can tell you as someone who's done a few recordings and has an idea of how much work it entails, I would've taken those fucking royalty points.

Aspiring producer promotes himself to a potential customer. Shocking!

But then again I still see him as the guy who made Racer X and Bulldozer, which gives him an almost endless stack of "Get Out of Jail Free" cards.

I didn't interpret the letter as him begging; just laying out how he would record them given his principles. If true, he's turned down quite a bit of money by not taking points on any of the albums he's recorded. A while ago I read 33 1/3: In Utero and I think he describes how recording this album caused him some problems afterwards. I don't recall the details.

I like his recording aesthetic; Surfer Rosa is phenomenal sounding and I also like the sound of In Utero though I don't really know the specifics of what he did versus some of what someone else mixed or whatever.

I don't know if he's a jerk or not but I do like the few records of his I've heard. Actually, just these two.

However, if I'm remembering this correctly from some other interview somewhere, he did influence "I'm Amazed" and by influence, I mean "ruined." It's still a great song but the version on the Purple tape (? I think) is incredible. That other part that Frank and Kim sing is beautiful. Aside from that mistake, great fucking album.

No googles for me, I've been speaking English fluently since the 80s. I just think there is nothing noteworthy about a producer that was begging to produce the next album for what was the hottest rock band of that time.

Would you raise your eyebrows about a producer begging to produce Beyonce's next album today? Whether her work has real quality is irrelevant, we can't deny that she is a massive hit. Same thing.

who said he wasnt legit? lucmove's tone (if you can call it that on the internets) was kinda condescending but he's brazilian so maybe he's using google interpreter. Albini is one of my fave producers. Albini, Norton, Moulder....

Music studio producer wants nothing more than produce current hottest musical group's new album and knows all the exact reasons why he should be hired instead of anybody else.

News at 10.

he's kind of passive aggressive and basically saying if you don't pick me for the project then you are just like all the bands you say you hate and $400,000 is a what your record company would expect to pay me so give me any amount less than that and we're cool (as long as its not insulting, so $395K is good) but remember plumbers are fucking expensive. and then if the record bombs its your fault not mine. fucking brilliant.
