Number of times I've seen this band listed and never knew anything about them! I could have seen them play Doornroosje in Nijmegen if I'd know how good they were.

Don't know what you'd call them, grime? Tribe?
Anyway I always thought they were from Holland because Die Antwoord means The Answer, in Dutch. But Dutch is also similar to Afrikaanse so maybe it's also a South African term, which is where they are apparently from. Never known any bands from there before, this video is fucking superb though. Great beats, make-up/costumes and dancing. It's the real McCoy!

Video that is shown near the start in a clip, not sure when this is from, I think maybe a couple of years old. More weird stuff, bit scary but certainly it's good music. Hip hop isn't my main thing, but there is some shit out there that I really like. They know what they are doing.

These guys are totally nuts. interesting documentary about them here. I really wish I'd got to see them at Doornroosje years ago, these guys are about to become mega famous.

brand new video just out from them - Cookie Thumper. A song about penetrating young girls from the behind, or something..
Again good stuff, they have three videos out made by this Zef company. They are short films/music videos and all top quality production and acting. They like to bring in extras who are insanely good looking as well. Totally love the South African lingo, never really heard it before. It's really interesting. Some of sounds english and some of sounds dutch, mixed with I don't know what other languages African ones I expect.
Can't wait to see Yolandi Visser in her first full length feature movie, there will undoubtedly be one eventually and I think probably quite soon. She seems to be a very talented and versatile actress, as well as being dangerously cute.

They don't skimp on cost when it comes to their videos that's for sure. This is real professional shit, and also good acting and humour. Interesting to see something like this come out of South Africa, I can't think of any other films or bands I know from there, only red wine, which I purposely don't buy because it's unethical.
This latest album of theirs was and maybe still is (?) accompanied by a series of what are being called Zef films. A company that does music videos and maybe more? be interested to find out, they seem to know what the fuck they are doing.
It's also interesting that a lot of the people in this are also a lot like the Dutch, not just the language that is similar. Also Sweden/Scandinavia. Swedish is a bit similar as well I think to both. |
