Take the test as per the link below:

www.influentialalbums.com

If you have more than 70 of these in your collection you are deemed a real muso (or a really sad git whichever way you want to look at it).

I've only got 42 and I'll bet nobody's got the Dave Brubeck Five album.

I don't think I had heard of John Martyn until 2011. I bought a double live album of his recently that is highly regarded. It's pretty good, lot of different stuff going on. For his time period, I can see why he is important.

So true. Let's get rock records in perspective here. What does FB call it, a luxury item, like luxury toilet paper or something. I don't care that it's an easy target.

i like unknown entries for checking some new old music, other than that i don't take the list seriously; one album per act, the total of 100, putting it on facebook, doesn't say whom or what they influenced (a generation of musicians or someone's wallet for a week?)

Yes! They were trying to stay away from the albums that always get name-dropped. Probably why they picked Revolver over Sgt. Pepper's. And are all the albums on the list more influential than Tommy?

And I have to confess... I've been buying music for almost 35 years (probably about half of it by artists from the British Isles) and I have no fucking clue who John Martyn is.

Lists piss me off.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Bon Iver can surk mah durk.

I walked into a very historic bar downtown and they were playing a phenomenally groovy song.

And it was still grooving ten minutes later. That's why I bought that Stone Roses album. I can't think of another track on it.

I don't hate them anymore. Haven't heard them in at least 15 years.

Seriously, Screamadelica is great. You probably wouldn't like it though. I'm not saying you have bad taste. But you do

18 Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (cassette ) Does having ‘A Nice Pair’ which contains both ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ and ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ count?)
32 The The - Soul Mining (cassette)
33 Nirvana – Nevermind (cd)
37 Lou Reed – Transformer (cassette)
38 The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (cd) Worse cd purchase ever. Flung it across the room till it broke.
39 AC/DC - Back In Black (vinyl)
49 The Breeders - Last Splash (cassette)

74 The White Stripes – Elephant (cd)
87 Pixies – Doolittle (vinyl and CD)

I agree, the inclusion of Slowdive is daft. The fact that they have three of the 'seminal' shoegaze albums and some of the other picks says a lot about the peeps who compiled the list.

And why no Black Sabbath??
Thomas Posted - 01/30/2013 : 17:13:46
Like Carl I have 15.

It's great that The Fall are included, and granted that band has a lot of releases, but the selection they chose for the list r,is an odd one. "Hex Enduction Hour," "Live At The Witch Trials," "Dragnet," or "The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall" woulda been much better picks.

That's definitely not the wrong Stooges album. Besides the Wierdness there's not really such a thing. I know Raw Power had a major influence on the Sex Pistols and a few other punks but Fun House influenced the Ramones, Nick Cave, Pixies, etc. Both were massive.

An ideal list would include the two alright.

Arcade Fire, whether you like their music or not, have spawned a shitload of imitators in their short lifetime so I can see why they are listed.

Zen Arcade should be there. And The Velvet Underground & Nico album.
BLT Posted - 01/30/2013 : 09:45:11
Why is there a jazz album? I thought it was a rock list. If we're going to open that door, where is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony? Robert Johnson? Hank Williams? But we have "Close to the Edge", Arcade Fire and the wrong Stooges album... BAH!

I own 37 (actual retail versions, not digital copies) but I've heard or owned another 40 that I didn't deem worth having/keeping. (How many times do you have to hear Trout Mask Replica or Pet Sounds to know you're never going to "get it"?)
Discoking Posted - 01/30/2013 : 04:41:16
i'd score ten more if digital music was counted.

I scored 32 and i adjusted my score to compensate for the lack of taste of whoever designed this test, it's a fake. I've nearly met The Kills + I used to work with a guy who went to school with the stone roses so fuck this test. I shit on this test with my musical ears
