Posted - 10/21/2012 : 19:19:29 did you ever buy an album or cd based on seeing somebody wearing a shirt or perhaps just cause you knew they were a certain genre and you like the album cover or name? i know i did, and many were just from brief mentionings on this site or talking about music with friends.
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass - so fucking glad i bought this. a friend mentioned them at a party but not enough to sell me on it, then i think they were mentioned on this site, and then i saw the album title and it was only $2 and boom! me likey. sweet ass buy.....

Posted - 10/21/2012 : 20:38:37 i can't tell you how many punk bands i got into (some would obviously be rejected) because of the following:
1. skatepark graffiti 2. punk kids with shirts/patches 3. mixtapes - but then i wasn't buying them blind then...
Hits: verbal abuse, circle jerks, MOD/SOD, HDQ, GBH.... Misses: voivod, caustic thought, and at first corrosion of conformity but then it seems only their first was really really good after that it was downhill, i guess i bought their 3rd or something and it was way too heavy...

Posted - 10/21/2012 : 20:09:14 Back when there were record stores and few radio stations, I would go down to the store where they had punk LPs and buy the one with the coolest cover.
This was hit and miss.
Hits: Morally Bankrupt, Problem Children, Dayglo Abortions Misses: Children in Adult Jails, The Crumbsuckers
Voivod's War & Pain was really bad, but it worked out years later.
It was so bad I gave it away. They were playing a local bar and I thought, this will be good for a laugh. They were incredible! I asked, "What albums do they play this music on?" I was told most of the songs were on Angel Rat. For a short time they made some great music.
I though, maybe I misjudged War & Pain. I bought the CD but I still can't listen to it. |
