Posted - 10/03/2012 : 05:44:25 I've never listened to the Roots, don't really listen to rap but I just saw some of Questlove's drumming and really enjoyed it and thought I'd try something different.
Can anyone recommend the Surfer Rosa or Trompe Le Monde of Roots albums?
Thanks. |

Posted - 12/26/2012 : 15:13:49 Initial impressions of four tracks from Illadelph Halflife:
Respond/React---Started out interesting, then it just became something on in the background, everything blurring together, a lot of talking over a repetitive, yet interesting musical bit. There isn't enough musical variation in this and the instrumental part isn't interesting enough to hold my interest for the five minutes.
Section--nice drumming. This just feels like more of the same from the first track.
Panic---it was alright.
What They Do----reminds me of Joe Satriani in a strange way. Perhaps his song, Cool #9. Feels like something from the 70s. I like it, don't know how often I'll listen to it, but I liked it. The song goes on a bit too long; I was ready for it to end around the halfway point, then the solo outro kicked in, which I quite liked. Overall, I liked this one, nice mellow track.

Posted - 10/06/2012 : 02:45:50 LBF---thanks. I'll start with illadelph halflife. I'm excited to hear something new and outside my usual taste.
Jose---thanks as well. I'll give Things Fall Apart a chance after halflife. I do love live music so I'll add the concert album as well, but first I want to hear their studio work.
Thanks again for your picks, it'll be a little while but I will find this thread and let you know what I think.
cheers

Posted - 10/05/2012 : 09:59:29 Yeah arm^3, you should listen to him, he knows more about them. I still like that one album, never got much into them after that, so by "lbf's mention should mean something to you" that's ambiguous but I'll take to mean a good thing. Regardless, you can't not start a topic like this and not fill us in on your findings. report back. curious |

Posted - 10/05/2012 : 01:55:08 Things Fall Apart is real swell, Arm3x. their live album is real swell, too. it's called Roots Come Alive. their latest album, Undun, has gotten much love from the press for being a cohesive collection of songs that tells of the downfall of a man, but sequenced in reverse.
Voodoo by D'angelo is a stone cold classic. produced by ?uestlove, and he also performs on it.
Illadelph Halflife comes highly recommended by LBF, which should mean something to you.

Posted - 10/03/2012 : 14:36:06 things fall apart is a classic. their new one has gotten lots of praise, especially as an album album. meaning "it as an album." see what i say?
they have a live album that came out, i think, after things fall apart. that may be the way to go.
also check out Voodoo by D'angelo if you want more ?uestlove.
