Hello folks - it has been awhile.
The wife and i are doing a Pacific Northwest jaunt in early July, and i'm soliciting some ideas for stuff to do. More so in Portland than Seattle (in Seattle we're staying with friends who will no doubt sherpa us through the city).
Things we like:
Museums
Good food
Good beer (more me than her)
Thrift stores
Art
Interesting local things that i can't do in New Jersey

I know what you mean about the single speed cyclists, as much as I love them (and yes I have been to critical mass bike rides) but now that I can't get around not driving, somehow everyday seems a bit like critical mass... maybe I just need to get past my impatience. But somedays I can't tell if half the people in Portland think they are Lance Armstrong or just being political. |

There use to be an interesting AAA team in Portland, but they got rid of the team to make room for an MLS team. Stupid. |

Thanks for the suggestions so far folks. Rogue beer is a must (although to be fair, i drink a good deal of it here in NJ - my local bar carries a few of their bottles). For Portland, my wife has a hotel in mind that has a brewery on site, so i may never leave. I'm pissed we're missing the Mariners by a few days. I want to go to Experience Music, i want to wear some flannel, i want to put a bird on it, and i want a Voodoo Doughnut.

I had a really nice Oregon trip last July. For Portland:
1.Hotel: Inn at Northrup Station was good...a bit quirky. Don't think it was way expensive. Could stay there again. Free streetcar tokens every day which was nice. Decent parking for our rental car.
2. Pok Pok: very interesting Thai restaurant that is overwhelmingly busy, and in my opinion, really wonderful food and neat atmosphere. Gigantic waits unless you get there early.
3. Wildwood: restaurant across street from my hotel: a bit pricy but had a good upscale meal with lots of local ingredients
4. Oregon Museum of Science and Industry: enjoyable science museum: nice setting on the river also. Went there for my kiddo, but I had a fun time as well.
5. Koi Fusion: Korean taco truck: follow on twitter...they were tasty little treats that I happened to track down at an outdoor musical festival.
Portland has tons of food stalls and lots of food trucks. I personally love that kind of thing. Great food city that's for sure. Check Yelp or other review sites to check out these places. I hope you have a great time up there...can't wait until I can go back. Oh, and if you are going to the Oregon coastline, I have some neat suggestions of places that I really loved.

Having watched all but seven episodes of Fraiser, I consider myself
an expert on Seattle. There is nothing to do there.

An acquaintance of mine moved to Portland about fifteen years ago.
He came back once and mentioned Powell's, then he disappeared.

If you do find free time in Seattle, the gum mural in an alley near the Public Market is, uh, kind of interesting -- and kind of disgusting. Really, it's my favorite thing in Seattle, aside from the Space Needle. A friend and I discovered it by accident while wandering slightly off the beaten path.

You'll probably trip over Portland's Saturday Market if you're there over a weekend - http://www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com/
There are many worthy brewpubs in Portland but you can't go wrong the Rogue distillery & public house. Rogue beers are some of the best on the planet - try a flight of beers to get a good sampling.

A few free things:
This might have limited appeal - but its a very Portland thing - trekinthepark.com will be happening in July.
Walk around a very cool cemetery that is the final home of many of Portland's founders - http://www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org/home.html. A few years back a CD was released with music by Portland artists about the stories/people there.
