Hi Gang,

So I invented these unique new frames for displaying your vinyl record albums, and I just released them to the world (read: southern Ontario) last month.

www.RecordsOnWalls.com

I'm just getting geared up in the marketing phase of things, so if you have any suggestions on where you might see these frames being available, or general feedback, that would be great. Right now I'm targeting indie record stores, but I'm not sure if this is the best approach.

Thanks in advance,
1c

FBC - As far as I can tell, they are unique to the world. Nothing fancy, just a functional frame that works. There is a product called art vinyl in London that is pretty cool (but much more expensive). Unfortunately, I'm not shipping overseas yet, but maybe I'll find someone interested in distribution over there, but to be honest, that's a ways off. I'm also kind of thinking about 7", but those are a ways off as well. And thank you for the store suggestions, I'm actually taking the big business thing much more seriously, and have gotten permission from a local musician to use this artwork (www.recordsonwalls.com/Vinyl-Record-Frames/jim-guthrie)

PMJK - That is a good suggestion about the UV protective front, but I haven't acted on it yet. I guess I could have the sheets sold separately in the online store as an add on. I will definitely consider it - thanks! As for the double, the frames can fit a double album, and if you have two frames right next to each other, you can even display a gatefold cover. I have yet to show this feature with any pictures, so that's another thing to add to my long to do list.

Thanks for all the feedback, they've been very helpful. If anyone else has more suggestions, keep them coming..

Thanks,
Steve

and 7"

I know you're targeting indies for now, but I could see the frames sitting comfortably next to the album prints in my local HMV.

Yes what a great idea indeed!
Have you thought of making on for double album sleeves?
You could also designe a UV protective front, as direct sunlight may fade the precious artwork.

What a great idea! There could be a similar product over here, but if there is, I've never seen it. Is there a patent for such a product? I'm not too clued up on these things. I do watch Dragons Den.

I've been wanting to fill a wall with vinyl covers for ages but without damaging them. No Blu-tack or pins. Ah I can picture it now. A room wall to wall with vinyl. Decks and mixer in the middle.
Perfect for a place like Hard To Find Records http://www.htfr.com

Good luck. If you ship, I might be placing an order.

(I reread your post. you do have the patent! good good)

BIG BIZ is the shit!! So are the Widows!

Young Widows introduced me to one of my favorite bands of the year - MY DISCO. Can't get enough of them, and it's amazing that they released an album last week!

Jedi, you're in France, and it's funny, because my first store in Toronto sold 12 frames to a Frenchman on the first weekend. Merci beaucoup! It was the highlight of my launch!!

So Fnac is the equivalent of a tv/stereo/video/music/digital place? Probably something like a bestbuy here.. But I'm worried that the average consumer here won't get the 'functionality' of the frame. They may be looking for something pretty, rather than something that record fans actually need? Does FNAC carry new releases in store, or just re-releasing old beatles albums like they do here in North Am?

Here are some specific questions.. How do they display the frames in the stores? Is it in a shelf with records, or somewhere separate? What is the price? Are they sold individually or is there a '3-pack' option? Are your friends buying them?

I know that's a lot of questions.. Answer what you like, but I will reward you with frames if we ever meet. It seems to be the only currency I carry these days...

Speaking of currency, I managed to get one of my favourite Canadian artists to give me permission to use his art for my packaging. What an awesome dude, and what great music: http://www.myspace.com/jimguthrie

Cheers,
Steve!

I love that you used Big Business and Young Widows to demonstrate.

Frames for vinyl record sleeves are available in stores here (I see them often at the Fnac store), but they're nowhere near as clever as yours. They're just dumb glassed frames, sized to fit a vinyl record. And the very reason why I wouldn't consider using one of those is how much of a pain in the ass it would be to extract the record from the frame each time I want to listen to it. (Of course I could keep the record out of its sleeve but I'm wayyy too fussy about my records to ever do that.)

Anyway. I'd target record shops. Ones that sell vinyl, obviously. Or just call it "Skiva" and sell the patent to Ikea ;-)

Disclaimer: if you speak Swedish and noticed that I misused the word "Skiva", kindly direct your recriminations to Google translation, which led me to believe it meant "record". Thanks.
