I don't know if anyone else will enjoy this as much as I do, but I found this blog called The Daily Guru- written by "The Music Guru"- and it's all album and song reviews and they're so badly written. He overuses words like "truly" and "iconic" to an insane degree.

I posted some examples at my blog, RJ Battles, but here are a couple of my favorite quotes:

"Walk on the Wild Side" Lou Reed
"Even without this knowledge, the fact that a song that so directly speaks of prostitution, drugs, and so many other "taboo" subjects became a top ten hit is yet another reason why there is no other artist worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Lou Reed."

Star LP Belly
"Whether it is the eerie, dark overtones of "Gepetto" or the deeply introspective title track, Donelly's lyrics transcend generations and rival any words ever written."

You should check out his blog and post your favorite quotes in this thread.

i'm surprised he has enough restraint to not overuse exclamation points. this blog is a goldmine.

Nice redundancy.

(I think it was harder to make original music when we only had rocks and sticks.)

Makes you want to copy/paste the entire blog over here. I especially like his generic views on music, history, and music history.

<<Throughout history, so-called "beach towns," specifically those in California, have earned the reputation for being extremely laid back places, and has been the inspiration for everything from the "surf rock" of Dick Dale to the iconic harmonies of The Beach Boys.>>

<<One can easily make the case that now more than ever, making original music is far more difficult and rare an occurrence than at any other point in history.>>

OK, how about this one:

"Gilded Palace of Sin" LP The Flying Burrito Brothers
"Presenting what is without question the perfect combination of country and rock styles, The Flying Burrito Brothers remain one of the most important bands in music history, and their 1969 debut, The Gilded Palace of Sin is without question a true musical masterpiece."

In the same review he uses the phrase "nothing short of perfect" in two sentences in a row.

I have to give him credit- it looks like he really does sit down everyday and write, and unlike 99% of bloggers (including me) he's serious and isn't trying to be a smartass.

And I'll admit, someone could go through my blog and find many examples of bad writing and me being stupid.

You snobs!

Seriously, that site is hilarious. Thanks for the link.

From a Dizzy Gillespie review:
"Easily one of the most overlooked genres in history is that of the classic "big band" sound."

I can think of a few more obscure genres.

He is over the top in each review, but do give him credit for the volume of his work and he seems to have pretty good taste in music.

And, by the way, darwin, here's a quote where he shows his love for The Kinks, and the word "truly".

"You Really Got Me" The Kinks
"Though it has been covered countless times over the past forty years, there truly is nothing that can compare to the phenomenal original 1964 recording, as The Kinks truly changed the world with their hit "You Really Got Me".

And Superbounder, you're right about that. If I ever need to find another job I'm thinking of asking him to write me a reference. "Jimmy is, without question, the most truly iconic worker in the history of employment..."

TRANS, I'm obsessed with Amityville- I tried reading that book a long time ago and it was so shitty I gave up. I heard, though, that it's filled with errors- factual and grammatical.

That is hilarious. I as well enjoy bad writing. Read 1978's The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. His writing is so atrocious you actually become confused and have to flip back pages to catch back up. Some of the writing makes you scream with laughter rather than horror. To this day, my brother and I will get together just to read it outloud...my dog-eared copy if FILLED with notes. Fun stuff!

His name is Dalton. He's got a degree in philosophy.

I feel mean doing this cause he's passionate about music and he's very earnest.

I'm not a great writer or speller but I try to be clear and not over-use certain words. Here's another quote that I like:

"Midnight Train to Georgia" Gladys Knight & the Pips
"Having been featured in countless films, most notably in a rather iconic scene in The Deer Hunter, "Midnight Train to Georgia" is, without question, one of the most perfect and iconic songs ever recorded."

I noticed he loves saying:
"truly"
"iconic"
"one could make a case"
"without question"
"in the history of music"
"of his generation"

From your attached quotes he really seems like a master of the superlative!

By that criteria, the Kinks are worthy.
