my trusty acer laptop is being weird. i can hear it running harder than usual and noticed that with no programs open at all it's running at 93% capacity!

something called xuidow.exe is demanding all this energy.

any ideas?

i cannot stop the process and will try the aforementioned tips after this virus scan finishes.

i did run a search and found the actual file imbedded into the system folders and deleted it. maybe this was a mistake because it's still running.

if all else fails, i will attempt to zero out the harddrive, i suppose. better look for my software discs.

I don't like the sound of xuidow. It's not something
well known to the intranet and it probably shouldn't
be there if you don't know what it is.

I would look in the registry (regedit) under
WKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Run and also RunOnce, and in the
start menu->All Programs->startup and see if you
can figure out where it is running from, and
possibly where it came from.

Can you close the process? Does that help?
If it's starting when you boot up, you could go into msconfig and stop the process from running then. If that's too difficult because the PC is too slow, boot up in safe mode, run msconfig and try to disable the process from there.
