So, any of you Midlake fans: have you heard the new CD and what do you think of it?

I'm trying to keep an open mind about it, but so far have been***EDIT <was>*** really disappointed. Sounds very monochromatic compared to all of their other releases. ****EDIT: just needed to give it more listens and I'm really coming around on it now******

Worst thing for me: listening to it on my itunes today, and when a song came on I said to myself "wow this sounds pretty good" only to realize that I was listening to the next Midlake cd in my collection: Milkmaid Grand Army EP.

I heard there were some nice reviews of it, but saw that Pitchfork ran a fork literally through them: think it was something like a 3.6 out of 10. Ouch. *****EDIT: now I'm thinking they got jobbed by the Pitchfork guy. Yeah it is darker stuff, but I don't think the reviewer gave it enough listens before stabbing them in the back*****

get a dog. you'll be forced to walk it, then listen to your iPod. that's my fatherly routine for LISTENING to music. and also the commute to work.

Good! I'm liking it too. Has little parts of songs I really like. Want to see them live to see if it is even better.

Yeah, it's a little strange that they cut out most of the super-melodic parts of Van Occupanther and left the husk. Still, it has some moments that are pretty good. I hope it gets better for you.

got it in the mail yesterday, gave it a spin today. my first impression is "they spent years making this and they couldn't come up with any melodies?" i sure hope it grows on me.

good to hear it's growing on you, superabounder. they spent so much time on it that it just CAN'T be a bore to listen to (well, if you really pay attention to it, that is).

Pot, if you are going to check out any more Midlake then Van Occupanther is definitely worth buying...really good and much better than anything else they have made.

Do you know I swithered between milkmaid and that when I bought it. I have listened to occupanther, i just can't remember it. I bet it's really fucking great.

Yeah that's true...Bamnan and Slivercork is beautiful and mesmerizing. I remember Homer's Pet Monkey saying he thought it sounded like Tim Smith was high on cough medicine when he listened to a song or two on there. It gives me a comforting feel though (kinda like Nyquil I guess).

OK, I'm about 6 listens in to the new album and it is finally clicking for me. I think it is going to seriously be a grower. Very lush and layered. Listening to it through good headphones and really liking it a lot now. It is darker and harder to access, but it is pretty delicious stuff. Really good listening to it straight through and concentrating more on it which I had just half listened to it before.

i'm equally keen on Bamnan and Slivercork. it's like hearing an edgar allan poe story in music.

I got 5 free tracks from the Guardian last weekend. I listened to them and thought they sounded pretty uninspiring. The only other album from them that I have is Milkmaid... and I hardly ever listen to it anymore. I liked it when I first bought it, but it quickly became boring..

i'm awaiting my vinyl copy to arrive in the mail. i love midlake, so i too am not letting the luke warm reviews spoil my fun. i feel like there's no way it's NOT going to be at least super enjoyable.
