I was fortunate enough to see Pearl Jam play four shows in the soon to be demolished Philly Spectrum. Over the course of the four nights they played about 104 different songs, the last show, on Halloween was 3 and 1/2 hours long and they played 41 songs.
It was unreal. A dream come true.
During the last show they played my favorite song, Satan's Bed, which is a rarity as well as my second favorite song, Spin the Black Circle. They pulled out rarely played songs, never before played tunes, long jams as well as a cover of Whip It dressed like Devo. A showgirl would occasionally walk across stage with a sign showing the world series score.
The crowd was crazy, the band inspired and the show epic. By far, the best live concert I've ever seen. |

I've heard that show, it's a great concert; long with some great song choices. The alternate version of Jeremy is excellent. |

Thanks. Sounds like you got a great spot, which can make all the difference esp in a huge venue. I've seen them many times but my big RAIN/PJ experience was quite a few years ago............they played Randall's Island here in NYC for 2 days and one of the days was pouring rain from start to finish with no rain delay! mud everywhere, water ankle high, haha. I felt like it was my Woodstock.

Yes! I've been spoiled by them, in a good way. Most bands I know of do the one encore, three songs, off stage, same set etc. Usually they play two encores, usually anywhere between ten to fourteen songs, depending.

The show was billed as an evening with Pearl Jam, no festival, no opening band. I guess it was a dream of Eddie Vedder's to play there and his enthusiasm and joy were evident.
My friend and I were in the general admission area in front of the stage; a very nice spot! The show began on an excellent note (no pun intended) and the band were on through the first seven, moody songs. Usually after a few slow ones I'm eager for something faster but in this case, I would've been content with even more slow numbers.
The sound quality was surprisingly great considering we were in a baseball stadium. I think it was because we were in a prime position. After "Small Town" he told us that the storm was rolling in and we had time to evacuate and that they promised to return to the stage and keep the concert going.
We made our way to the cusp of the indoor area off the diamond where we were packed in with people. It was pretty hot and a bit gross but fortunately no one threw up or anything by us. Actually, everyone was pretty well behaved and we did get a nice breeze where we were at.
After the first storm passed we re-emerged but shortly thereafter a second wave came; when we saw lightning we skedaddled back to our previous spot; though fortunately we weren't as jammed. I guess Phish canceled their show as did the Pitchfork festival that night. We figured they would eventually go back on stage. Some reviews have said it was a two hour wait but it was 2 hour and 45 minutes before we were back in place, band on stage etc.
The energy was a bit different when they came back but I feel they got into a good groove once again. The show had some hits and some rarities and some big hits were skipped cause of the time. The show could only be extended to 2am. I think they would've kept playing for another hour if not asked to stop. They finished "Black" and went into "Rockin' in the Free World" to end it.
The show was memorable and unique. Per the set list I saw afterwards, they were planning on playing around 40 to 41 songs, including big hits like "Alive", "Better Man" and "Given to Fly" etc. That they included songs like "Bugs" and "Hold On" and didn't play the bigger hits was interesting.
I think this would have been one of their all time best shows if not for the rain. Musically, aside from, as I said before, being a little off from the delay, they were really on. A lot of jamming and extending songs, Mike McCready laying down some sweet leads, same with Stone Gossard.
I was happy to be there and the trip itself, in addition to the show, was a lot of fun. We took the L back to our hotel and it was incredibly packed.
I've never been to a concert, like this before, and while the delay made it memorable; I would've preferred them having a meteorologically unfettered evening.

Fill me in, Arm. I wasnt aware of a stadium show.........that would kinda bum me out ie. long rain delay plus seeing em in a stadium. Was this just a PJ show or part of something else? I thought they were only doing arena shows. Were you anywhere near the stage? |

I just returned from a trip to Chicago to see Pearl Jam play in Wrigley Field. They were going to play 40 songs and ended up playing 32 'cause of the storm. The show was delayed for nearly three hours. I think they did a great job given the circumstances. Definitely the most unique Pearl Jam, heck, any concert experience I've ever had. I was happy to be there.

i was there at the Vancouver show. Frank sounded like shit (it was the venue, not the man). Fortunately i saw them abt 9 months later touring Pistolero in a small intimate loud venue.
PJ were darn good. can't say i'm an uberfan but i like their stuff. They rocked Baba O'Riley.
PJ are like the U2s and Radioheads of the world. good to see once every 10-15 years or so. If i catch them this time around it'll be the 4th time since 1992. you can't deny they put on a good show.

State College 03 is an amazing, one-of-a-kind concert.
They really are the greatest live band.
Enjoy the Brooklyn shows. Maybe by then the Pixies will be around and you can enjoy both.

So happy to see this. I, too, am a big PJ fan. Have seen many shows since late '90's or so. Always tell friends I dug their songs for the following reasons in order: 1. The music itself. 2. The great musicianship of the 2 guitarists and bass/drums . Vedder was the least reason tho he's fine.
But, as was said, they are prob the most FAN-friendly top band I know in that: I would catch them multiple times on same tour, maybe 3 shows in the same week and hear such DIFFERENT set-lists. I loved this re: them. And their shows were always longer than a typical rock show, like at least 2 1/2 hrs of non-stop energy. Once saw them @ Penn State (2005?) and, because they either had to start a little late, or it was their last show (I forget) they played 3 1/2 fuckin hrs! It was great.
Also respect them because, even tho they sell out arenas in short time, their tic prices are way below what bands of their popularity charge.
In fact, in 1996(?) they boycotted Ticketmaster (aka Ticketbastard) and had their own CHEAPER ticketing system for their tour. At least they made the effort since TM rips off fans, but it was kind of a debacle.........going up against a big monopoly corp.
And liked the anti-Bush, anti-Iraq comments Vedder would make at shows at that time , not taking up alot of time but making his good points. Luv that song about Bush: "Born on 3rd base, thinks he hit a triple"
Looking forward to Oct---2 nites @ Barclays in Brooklyn. Newest arena around. State of the art sound. Saw another one of my musical gods there in Dec.....Neil Young. |

They're definitely worth checking out live if you're a casual fan. You'll get a good amount of the hits plus a mix of rarities and new songs. Some songs they jam on, others are similar to the album, just faster. Usually a two hour twenty minute show with a unique set list and if you're lucky, and it's a magical night, the crowd will inspire them into three hours, going past the curfew etc. |

me too. i liked Evolution (is that what it was called?) only cuz Todd McFarlane made the video. i tried. i remember a single from Yield made me think they had a chance. i never followed thru with that inkling. i think i want to be a fan cuz they offer so much to a fan.
but i just don't give a fucking shit.

I never got into Pearl Jam. I bought TEN, it never resonated with me, didn't explore beyond that, though they've had a couple singles that I liked a little. That's cool that you had a good experience with them, though, if you're into them that much.

I remember hearing that the Thunder Bay show was really good...that was in 05, right? I saw them in London that same year as they toured Canada. That was great show and tour. Since they didn't have a new album out they played all sorts of things from their career. The atmosphere seemed really nice; people were pretty friendly (generally speaking) and the shows I saw had a fun vibe overall.
Does you guys have the bootleg from that show? They used to have it for sale on their site but it's not there anymore. You could probably find a copy online; I'd share one but I don't have that show myself.
While I own the new album I haven't listened to it; I wanted to experience the new stuff in a live setting. A couple songs I love, some are good and others I don't really have an opinion of yet.
How cool that you saw them in '92. Wow. Raw Pj. I read an interview with one of their guitarists (Mike McCready) and he said how he'd watch Eddie climb things and be hoping he'd get down safely.
I've seen some great concerts, I've seen some amazing Pearl Jam shows but this last one in Philly was something else entirely. They busted out an improv from 94 (only been played twice) because someone (through the cartoonist Tom Tomorrow) pledged to donate a significant amount of money to a charity.
Whip It not only sounded good but was funny as well with the band imitating the robotic moves from the video.
The high point of the concert for me was when they went into the drum into for Satan's Bed! I was so happy.
I'm still happy about that and the entire experience. Going into the last show, after three nights of 30-31 song concerts, everyone figured they'd really do something special for Halloween and they did. An epic 3 1/2 hour, 41 song show.

Wow, I am glad that Eddie was ok. It sounds like that must have hurt. But it's cool how everyone pitched in.
Yes, my husband has seen them about 8-9 times. Our favorite time together was seeing them play a small curling arena in Thunder Bay about 5 years ago. My favorite was seeing Eddie do a dive off a pillar in 1992 at Lollapalooza. (He must have been like four stories up in the air.) I really like PJ and he's pretty crazy about them.
What do you think of their new album? I haven't heard all the songs, but the couple of songs I have heard rock.

I'm still high from the experience, over a week later...!
During the intro of a song called Porch, Eddie accidentally clocked his teeth with the mic and stopped singing. The crowd instantly took up the verse, it seemed like the entire arena sang out and they kept going. During the middle jam, we saw Eddie wander to the side of the stage and hold, what I'm assuming is ice, to his mouth. He went through at least two clumps of ice (I'd occasionally look in his direction while the band jammed out), it must've been a fairly bad blow. Anyway, that moment, with the crowd singing along while the bass drum kept the beat was incredible.
I think their goal was to play every album track during the four nights which they didn't do...but they came pretty close. All of the shows had a special feeling but the last one...wow! A perfect mix of hits and rarities they went on and on and on.
I think this is the longest post-concert high I've experienced, thank God I got to be there!
