Posted - 09/06/2009 : 20:49:15 Ok, so my life is in the shitter. but i feel pretty happy. just made 6 grand in the last 17 days and i have a bit more in the bank. i graduated in may but don't really want to work right now (except reffing). i'm gonna take some courses towards a bachelor's degree and if i can make my money last until early next year, i wanna take off to southeast asia. i'm thinking for 6-8 weeks cause from what i hear you can live there for like $25 day. i'm thinking thailand and/or bali. if time and money permit, i would like to visit australia for a week or two (from southeast asia).
any forumites have any travelling experience in the area? any must-sees, must-dos? any suggestions? lemme know. this is gonna be awesome.

Posted - 12/24/2009 : 15:06:50 i've decided to cut down on the amount of places visited. get to know fewer places better. gonna spend new years in Bali, then head over to Java (gonna check out the sunrise volcano). then make my way to the lower Andaman Coast bit of Thailand (ko phi phi, phuket, krabi, and rai leh (maybe a night or two over by ko samui/surat thani) and then up to bangkok for a flight to Manila, in philippines i plan to refresh (nice hotel/visit my bank/etc) then head down to cebu, boracay, and pelawan, before heading back to indonesia. Angkor Wat will be added to the itinerary if I can find time by cutting other areas short. peace out.

If you're going through SE Asia in particular you'll probably find it easier to browse those posts specifically, I think it's:
http://dean.katsiris.com/labels/asia.php (you can use the map to navigate to specific places or else just scroll a lot)
Or else use the photos to guide you to relevant info:

As for your itinerary, Bali is amazing. You could easily spend a month there (though if you don't get an extended-stay visa you'll only be allowed 30 days in Indonesia). Jakarta is a one or two day thing, though I did leave feeling I'd not seen it properly. But the island of Java, on which Jakarta is situated, is likewise incredible. Hike to the top of Gunung Bromo for sunrise (an active volcano), surf the great Batu Karas, definitely do NOT miss Borobudur/Prambanan, two incredible temples both located 30 mins from Yogyakarta, take a Taman Safari, etc etc.
Indonesia was one of my favourite stops.
Anyway, have a great trip and if you have any questions always happy to help.

I'm gonna be looking through that blog deaner. trying to pick out highlights. I'm flying into Surubaya on Dec 28 them leaving on Feb 7. I'm gonna try and get to Bali, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, a few places in Thailand, and Laos/Cambodia/Vietnam if time permits.
New Year's in Bangkok could be dangerous! I'll think about it.

Hi Sineoftheever, Yes do it! You will not regret it. Thailand is amazing, the people are lovely. Try get down to the Islands as quick as possible and head for Ko Pha Nang, Ko Phi-Phi, KO Tao. These places are magical, sun drenched, you meet lots of nice young people doing the same as you and the living is cheap. I had a ball there. You fly into Bangkok and train it down as far as Surat Thani, once at the port in Surat Thani you can get on local ferries that can take you to any of the Islands. I got nightly accomodation for about 7 dollars a night. Pretty basic but a shower, a fan(essential) and somewhere with a swimming pool or on the beach. Do it man, any questions drop me a mail. |

Posted - 09/07/2009 : 05:35:51 Don't bother with Phuket,Pattaya and Chiang Mai in Thailand - all for diff' reasons.
If you're figuring on spending a lot of time in Bangkok, your budget won't stretch very far here either.
Go to the beaches/islands further south or go over into Laos (Vientiane or Luang-Praban) or Angkor Wat/Siam Reap (Cambodia).
Also, if you come over here early next year, as you say, then that is high season and the prices go up accordingly. In the wet season (now) things are much cheaper.
Bali - I've travelled and worked a lot in Indonesia, but have never there - would love to go. |

Posted - 09/07/2009 : 00:42:48 Phuket's kinda iffy - depends on your age, no offense Mr. Jersey.
I spent 6 months travelling SE Asia from Indonesia to Northern Vietnam and then into China (which isn't SE). It's all great for different reasons. I did the whole 6 months on $5000 including transportation. I have all sorts of stories on my website.
