Posted - 08/04/2009 : 08:37:24 I noticed a lot of marijuana debate goes on between forum members fairly often. mainly with me and pot.
of course it should be used in moderation like anything else.
I think this documentary is incredible for pot smokers and for people who know nothing about the issue. even if you hate marijuana I think this documentary will open up your mind in some way. seriously it's really good and exposes the propaganda and misinformation the government has been spewing for years. it's a plant for g0ds sake and it's safe then alcohol and tobacco, yet the government spends billions of dollars (from your tax money I should add) every year fighting an un-winnable fight with something so benign .
anyway, don't take my word for it. watch this documentary- you will be hooked the second it starts. really- it is very entertaining and honest

mushrooms are amazing little fungi. if they were made illegal just because some people like to eat certain poisonous varieties, oh how our ecosystems would suffer! who bans plants anyway? how silly.

this seems a fair and balanced summary of cannabis and its effects. http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealthinfo/problems/alcoholanddrugs/cannabis.aspx
there has been a study that shows cannabis use increases the risk of testicular cancer by up to double; the testes have THC receptors. Generally though, like the Psych summary says, physical risks come more from tobacco smoked with it.
Thing is pot, I guess I'd take you and what you say more seriously if you weren't loading it up as some kind of government/system conspiracy. It all comes across as a bit KoK-lite. Like you say, up to you - and I guess if we do suffer ailments as a consequence of our lifestyles (that goes for me as well as you) then we have the NHS as a safety net.

I have responded to some, not all, of the points raised in this article below.
quote: Education and learning
There have also been suggestions that cannabis may interfere with a person's capacity to:
* concentrate * organise information * use information
This is true, it enhances my ability to do all those things.
quote: This effect seems to last several weeks after use, which can cause particular problems for students.
This is utter bullshit, there is not a modicum of evidence to even suggest this. My mate smoked everyday throughout his physics degree, and smoked a fat one before each exam, came out with a first and then went onto to do a PhD in astronomy.
I, on the other hand, got a 2(ii), and I only had the occasional joint during my student years.
quote: However, a large study in New Zealand followed up 1265 children for 25 years. It found that cannabis use in adolescence was linked to poor school performance, but that there was no direct connection between the two. It looked as though it was simply because cannabis use encouraged a way of life that didn't help with schoolwork.
Or maybe kids who tend to get into smoking cannabis in their teens are not very scholarly minded in the first place, in which case cannabis has got fuck all to do with it.
quote: Work
It seems to have a similar effect on people at work. There is no evidence that cannabis causes specific health hazards. But users are more likely to leave work without permission, spend work time on personal matters or simply daydream. Cannabis users themselves report that drug use has interfered with their work and social life.
I've done many jobs whilst under the influence of it, in most cases performing better that my colleagues who were not under the influence of it.
So far as social life goes, I find that it enhances it on so many levels.
quote: Of course, some areas of work are more demanding than others. A review of the research on the effect of cannabis on pilots revealed that those who had used cannabis made far more mistakes, both major and minor, than when they had not smoked cannabis. As you can imagine, the pilots were tested in flight simulators, not actually flying... The worst effects were in the first four hours, although they persisted for at least 24 hours, even when the pilot had no sense at all of being 'high'. It concluded "Most of us, with this evidence, would not want to fly with a pilot who had smoked cannabis within the last day or so".
What about driving?
In New Zealand, researchers found that those who smoked regularly, and had smoked before driving, were more likely to be injured in a car crash. A recent study in France looked at over 10,000 drivers who were involved in fatal car crashes. Even when the influence of alcohol was taken into account, cannabis users were more than twice as likely to be the cause of a fatal crash than to be one of the victims. So - perhaps most of us would also not want to be driven by somebody who had smoked cannabis in the last day or so.
I would never step onto a plane if the captain was high on cannabis, but I've been a passenger in cars where the driver has smoked with me on the way, and had absolutely no reservations about doing it. It does all depends on the person, and I would not trust everyone in this way. I have never driven stoned myself, and I wouldn't because I donot drive very much and generally don't feel confident driving anyway. But all I can say is, it makes me so much more alert and my reactions can be so sharp when I am under the influence of it. I am not suggesting it effects everyone as positively as this, but in a lot of people, the coinnosseurs of it, it usually does.
On the other hand I tend to find my reactions more sluggish and my concentration greatly impaired when I have used tobacco in the past, because I was always looking for a fix all the time. Cannabis does not have this effect.
quote: Is cannabis addictive?
It has some of the features of addictive drugs such as:
* tolerance – having to take more and more to get the same effect * withdrawal symptoms. These have been shown in heavy users and include: <snip> These symptoms of withdrawal produce about the same amount of discomfort as withdrawing from tobacco
Bullshit. There are virtually no withdrawals symptoms from smoking it, unless you smoke it with tobacco. There, the symptoms are from tobacco withdrawal.
quote: For regular, long-term users:
* 3 out of 4 experience cravings; * half become irritable; * 7 out of 10 switch to tobacco in an attempt to stay off cannabis.
The last bit there is sort of true, I have ended up becoming re-addicted to tobacco a few times after I've run out of smokes and not been able to get any because of the law in this country. But in these instances I had also given up tobacco recently, and it was not until many days had gone past without smoking any, and I have a few beers, then I want a smoke. I have used cannabis many times as a very effective way of giving up tobacco as well, but it would have been really nice if I had not ended up starting again in the first place, no thanks to the fascist laws.
quote: Compulsive use
The user feels they have to have it and spends much of their life seeking, buying and using it. They cannot stop even when other important parts of their life (family, school, work) suffer.
quote: You are most likely to become dependent on cannabis if you use it every day.
Then it is quite clearly a psychological addiction, and nothing to do with the cannabis itself. You can become addicted to anything if you do it on a daily basis, this does not necessarily suggest that it is harmful.
quote: What about skunk and other stronger varieties?
The amount of the main psycho-active ingredient, THC, that you get in herbal cannabis varies hugely from as low as 1% up to 15%. The newer strains, including skunk, can have up to 20%. The newer varieties are, on the whole, two or three times stronger than those that were available 30 years ago. It works more quickly, and can produce hallucinations with profound relaxation and elation – along with nervousness, anxiety attacks, projectile vomiting and a strong desire to eat. They may be used by some as a substitute for Ecstasy or LSD.
What is important when you smoke it is you eat properly and don't sit around on your arse all day.
Some strains agree with me more than others, but by and large the deciding factor on whether I get a nice high, or take a 'whitey', is in how good a shape I am in when I smoke it.
quote: “If cannabis controls our lives and our thinking, and if our desires centre around marijuana - scoring it, dealing it, and finding ways to stay high so that we lose interest in all else.”
The times I have been paranoid under the influence are when there is something else making my paranoid, such as the threat of the police. I would really much rather just relax and enjoy it than have to worry about where to score all the time. The reason people often become preoccupied with things like scoring is because of the prohibition laws, not the cannabis.
