So I've procrastinated enough this year about setting up a summer trip.
Do any of you have any Colorado tips as far as nice places to stay, lodges, good areas? I've been to Colorado Springs before, but stayed in kind of a bad motel. Not sure of any other good places to stay there.
Ideally I want a place that has a pool because my 9 year old is all about the pool on vacation. As far as activities: maybe some light hiking, possible river rafting, possible fishing, and a town with some things like a movie theater and restaurants would be good.
I did stay in a great lodge when I was a kid that had it all, but now it is freakishly expensive and I can't do that.
Thinking possibly of going to Estes Park, but don't know anyone who has been recently.
Any help?

Colorado is beautiful. I stayed in Telluride for a week on a roadtrip a while back. http://aventurasdelautomovil.blogspot.com/2007/08/telluride.html We were lucky to have a nice (free) place to stay, but I'm sure you could find something reasonable in the non ski season .. if i were a millionaire i wouldn't mind having a house there
not far from Telluride is Silverton, at tiny old western town that's still very much like it used to be back in the olde West. definitely worth a partial day trip there to check it out. have lunch or dinner. there's actually a great Mexican place there with good margaritas but i can't think of the name. near Silverton there is this awesome natural hot spring place called Orvis Hot Springs, which definitely hits the spot after a day of hiking
it is clothing optional so, fair warning on that... i think there are actually lots of natural hot springs in this area
on another trip to CO we visited Mesa Verde National Park, which has some native american cliff dwellings that you can actually take tours through. there's a cool looking lodge there and camping (we just stayed the day).. you could easily spend a few days in that area exploring. i know we only saw a small sliver of it

We've lived here in Denver more than 10 years now, and it's remarkable how rarely we get out of the city. The best time I've ever had in a Colorado town was before we moved to Colorado. My wife and I took a short trip (from Wyoming) to Steamboat Springs sometime in the mid-'90s. Steamboat is mostly a ski town, but it's fantastic in the summer, too. It's small enough to be charming, but they certainly have the things you're looking for, including movie theatres, river rafting, hiking, etc. I bet your 9-year-old would like the alpine slide. I know mine would. And nearby, there's a great mineral springs called Strawberry Park Hot Springs that's a must.
I'll check in with the travel editor here at the paper and see if she's got any other suggestions.

I was going to say Estes Park. I went there 2 or 3 times as a kid and then again 3 years ago. You're right there for the park, there's many short hikes, abundant wildlife, and I think there's plenty of hotels that would have good pools. However, we stayed a rented house. Also, Rocky Mountain National wasn't as crowded as Yosemite and Yellowstone.
The only time I've river rafted in Colorado was by Boulder.
