Glastonbury is but a week away and I have one major issue. On Friday night do I go and see Neil Young headline the Pyramid stage or see Ray Davies at the acoustic stage. I've seen neither live and would without doubt see both if they were on at different times. Anyone got any opinions on what I should go for? |

My choice... in the end it came down to wanting to share the good times with the people I love, who were all without question going for Neil Young. That coupled with me being less than enchanted with the idea of watching Fairport Convention beforehand made it a pretty easy decision. He played something pretty close to my ideal Young setlist and Rockin' in the Free World was definitely one of the highlights of the festival for me (well one of the musical highlights anyway).
I think this was the setlist (pilfered from some other unknown part of the internet)...

My ideal situation obviously would have been to tear myself in two and have the other half of me doing a one-legged polka to All Day And All Of The Night. Boy oh boy, that's one hell of a setlist. Anyone seen any footage of Ray Davies' performance? The BBC coverage looks pretty special but doesn't see to extend to the Acoustic Stage.

I see your dilemma, but its a good dilemma!
I just saw Neil Young last night and it was pretty damn amazing.
Despite his ageing his stamina, performance and energy were pretty astonishing. His band allow him to play pretty much every genre of his career and you wont be disappointed with the mix of classic rock, acoustic, piano led or country tinged setlist. I think there was only 1 or 2 songs from the new album and the rest were all classics. The energy from the old man on cinnamon girl and rocking in the free world were worth the admission fee alone.

When i saw him in 2006, out of 28 songs, he did 19 Kinks songs - and not just the ones you'd expect, he also did "Oklahoma, USA" and "Big Sky" which both blew my mind, as well as "20th Century Man" which was amazing. I'd say regardless of how long he plays, 2/3 of it will be Kinks songs, which is a totally fair ratio if you ask me.

It's probably 60% Kinks/40% solo, maybe even leaning a bit heavier on the Kinks side. He only has two solo albums and he knows what people want to hear. I have seen both Neil Young and Ray Davies and I am saying go with Ray for sure.

It's looking like I'm going to have to invest in an extra bag to carry the multitude of objects I'll need for writing requests on.
Brian, how many kinks tunes do you think i could expect to hear in typical Ray Davies set? This kind of detail could really sway my thinking. |

I once saw Shane McGowan respond immediately to a request for "The Sick Bed of Cuculhain" by a fan who gave him a bottle of whisky. He took a huge swig and launched straight into it. The band were playing "A Pair of Brown Eyes" at the time. |

I think Tom Jones only responds to underwear thrown at him. Neil Young starts his set 30 mins before Ray Davies, but anyway Brian (and floop) have convinced me. If it was me I'd see The Specials mainstage, stick around for the start of Neil Young's electric car set and then go on over to the acoustic stage and throw paper plates at Ray Davies (unless it's raining).

That's an excellent method of receiving requests. I might take some china plates to throw at Tom Jones with requests that he stops making music and becomes a recluse. |

Go see Davies - he tours far less than Young, and his music doesn't have the extreme pockets of suck that Young's has. Plus, do you really wanna hear 6-10 songs about the electric car? Because that is most likely what you're going to get. Plus, when you see Davies, bring a paper plate, write a request on it, and throw it on stage - he's known for playing requests submitted this way (i'm not kidding - someone requested "Have a Cuppa Tea" when i saw him this way, and he played it all the way through - some plates he caught he admitted to having forgotten/not liked, but it was a pretty cool thing to witness).

Maybe leaving it to chance is the answer. Let the night tell you where to go. I wouldn't know how to decide between those two either.

What a shame they're both not playing the acoustic stage. I'd go see Neil but the crowd might push me towards Ray which wouldn't be a problem. |
