Of all bands that get classic rock radio play, I can assuredly say that Blue Oyster Cult is the most underrated. All of their 3 songs that receive rotation to the masses are fantastic (well, I suppose "Godzilla" might rub some people the wrong way but I enjoy the song) and it makes me wonder why people don't dig further into their catalog. Metallica gave the classic "Astronomy" some attention when they covered it, but there's plenty of others like "Flaming Telepaths," "Career of Evil," "Dominance and Submission," "I Love The Night," "Goin' Through The Motions," "In Thee," "Take Me Away," "This Ain't The Summer Of Love," I could on and on. Plus, they're very versatile, you put on an album of theirs and one song will be some mystical sounding artifact of importance followed by a genuine pop masterpiece and then some hard rockin' metal.

The other picture must be him playing his 'Stun Guitar'

I've been listening to the 'Black and White' albums a lot recently, and it deserves repeating that they are all really great. They haven't dated at all, in fact a lot of their other stuff sounds really over produced and AOR-ish by comparison.

Here's a couple shots from last week. Highlights for me were: The Red & The Black, Before The Kiss(A Redcap), Cities On Flame, and Hot Rails To Hell. Killer...

B.O.C. - One of the few bands that have aged well. They even play up the whole C. Walken sketch as a mash-up intro and it worked great. Nice to see the band getting some mileage out of that whole damn cowbell stuff. Pics from tonight's show to follow........

That SNL sketch was funny at first but it pisses me off how when you mention BOC now so many knuckleheads reference that damn cowbell!

Yep. That's the drum tech (I was told) on cowbell. Usually hiding behind the amps playing along, but since the SNL sketch they're having a bit of fun with it...

Hard to pick my fave by BOC, but this is most likely it....

Keep tubing and you'll find stuff from the latest tours.

I assume that cowbell was played during "Reaper"...

Alot of their songs get me tongue tied, but non more than ME 262. Even reading the lyrics I screw 'em up.

They have all the lyrics on their site, but it'd be cool to have an old dot matrix print out.

Great stories, Thomas.

BÖC used to have a deal where you could send a dollar or two and get all the lyrics. (Good luck figuring them out on your own.) I still have them all, vintage 1983 -- perforated continuous-form paper with dot-matrix print.

The last time I saw them was around 95 on Long Island, their birth place. I purchased a T-shirt at the show with the ME-262 on it with the words, proudly stating, “Blue Öyster Cult - ON TOUR FOREVER”.

Those three are also up there for me. Most favorite being Secret Treaties then Tyranny and Mutation, but my all time favorite song of theirs is definitely from the first album, “Then Came the Last Days of May”. I used the live version from ‘On Your Feet…’ of that song on my CD share way back in the begging’s of this forum.

My one and only album I own of theirs is the 1982 “Extra Terrestrial Live” purchased around the time it was released. I have most of their catalog in cassette version and then again on CD. Remember the days of painted jean jackets. I had a friend paint the cover of the ‘Extra Terrestrial Live’ pictured below on my jacket.

I purposefully had him leave out the bands name. The name would have taken up to much space besides their identity was there if you looked close enough just by looking at the symbol on the space ship and abbr. spelling of their name on the crates. I’ll have to take a digital picture of it, but first I have to find where my wife stored it.

I actually remember radio concert spots promoting a small venue appearance of a band called ‘Soft White Underbelly’ where the announcer would ‘wink’ to the knowing few by playing ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’ in the background and unknowing lucky fans were really going to see the ‘Blue Öyster Cult’.

I also have a BÖC tattoo on my right calf. It’s from the back cover of ‘Fire of Unknown Origin.

Yes, I love the Blue Öyster Cult!

Their first three albums are easily in my all-time top 100 LPs list.

Saw them at the Country Club in Reseda in '84 and they were great. I stood at the left of the stage in front of Allen Lanier. They played for about two hours and I don't think Buck Dharma looked down at his guitar once. To top off a wonderful evening, I held up my hand and Joe Bouchard slapped me five on his way off the stage.

PS - Those guys are really short. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I am not sure that they were underrated. As teenagers we were all into BOC, and in the UK they were a pretty big and well regarded band and were unfairly lumped in with all the other metal acts of the time, when in fact they were a lot smarter than most others out there.

But, I have to say that when I saw them live in 1982 (I think) at a festival they were really, really bad. Such a disappointment. They were only stage for about 30 minutes and were just going through the motions and couldn’t wait to leave. It was later reported that the drummer had quit an hour before they were going on stage and a roadie was pressed into service to keep time. Sad, but that’s what you get when a band passes its sell buy date.

Anyway, thanks for the thread and for the nostalgia and for bringing up another superior 60’s/70’s band for discussion (superior when compared to most of the dross that was the 80’s and 90’s). I’m now waiting for the Incredible String Band thread and then l will be really happy.
