Posted - 11/05/2007 : 09:16:38 Movie endings, much debated topic throughout the ages. Great starts to movies, now thats a different matter. Probably my favourite opening to any film ever is Narc. One of very few films were I just sort of sat there thinking, wow, Im watching the rest of this 'movie' (film). Discuss?

More nerdishness: the cloud footage that opens and closes the US release of Brazil is taken from The Never Ending Story.

Totally agree with that. I thought exactly the same thing.

Yup, I knew it was filmed in Venice.
The Player was partly filmed at Ai Japanese Restaurant and the Rialto Theater in South Pasadena, two of my favorite old haunts. I haven't seen The Player since it was released on video in the mid-90s. Thanks for reminding me I need to see it again.

I realised when typing the topic title I couldn't remember how many n's are in begining (?) so I just added loads to make it not look as obvious that I'm a bit slow.

Another film that starts well and then turns out to be dissapointing was The Village.

Posted - 11/06/2007 : 00:25:21 i didn't know Kubrick borrowed stuff like that (though he did like to wring other people's brains for ideas), but wasn't Blade Runner made after The Shining?
for me the starkest contrast between a captivating opening and sucking rest of the movie would be Saving Private Ryan (well, except the stabbing scene, that one has some strong emotions). oh, Homers said that already... not that obvious after all, eh
thanks for some new additions to my list of movies to see

That's funny that you mentioned Kubrick, sean; I was just gonna say The Shining. I love the very first shot, over the lake and the music too, I think it's the creepiest shot in the whole movie.

i think APOCALYPSE NOW is pretty epic. trying to think of others...
the opening of GOODFELLAS always makes me want to watch the rest of the film. we should talk about opening credits too. an art in itself. Saul Bass has some famous ones (VERTIGO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, ANATOMY OF A MURDER, PSYCHO, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, SECONDS)
the opening of ROYAL TENENBAUMS is up there in my opinion. Wes Anderson is the master of the montage
