Somehow this is the first I have heard about this. It's the name given to the ultra-low frequency underwater sound detected by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration several times during the summer of 1997 around the South American southwest coast.

Apparantly it fits the audio profile of a living creature, although there is no known creature that could have produced it.

Anyone else know about this? Theories?

It's always interesting to think we are still discovering new life within our own world, but this is almost always so small that it is understandable it had remained undiscovered up until that point. This 'bloop' seems to throw open the possibility that something pretty big could still be as yet undiscovered.

The ocean is a huge world of it's own, and we still don't know so much about it, if there is anywhere a new creature could remain undiscovered, that's the place.

Anyway, it's just one theory, anyone heard any others?

Apparently it inspired this book

And there are rumours abound that JJ Abrams' 'Cloverfield' project could be based on it.

That's the fantasy side of it of course. I'd like to know more facts, if there are many more.

There was supposedly a low frequency sound (similar to that of a marine mammal) detected in one of these lakes in North America that purportedly has a monster of some sort. I'm trying to find the link.

As far as discovering new large species here's a prime example.

This is for Dallas(I don't want him to feel left out)

I saw an Attenborough prog once on creatures that live at the very deepest recorded depths and god did they look mind-blowingly weird/scary/wonderful. No CG would ever dare go so far as what is already lurking down there. I was watching with friends and we were utterly gobsmacked. I'm surprised those images haven't been broadcast ad finitum since, as they would endlessly fascinate anybody! I love that Frank sings about this kind of stuff.
